I'd like to get the Cargo Ship and Mercenary Gunship to use different graphics than a scout but if I were to change scout graphics then it'd change it for all the units that uses the scout graphics. Second, how do I create my own smk files to make portraits?

To change a unit's graphics, instead of changing the grp of the used graphic itself you can link the unit to different using iscripts or any modding tool that handles .dat/.mpq files.

This isn't exactly the same, but it's the same concept:

A lot of random heroes such as Tom Kazansky, Torassque, Danimoth (arbiter), etc don't have their own portraits. They just have the same portraits as the normal wraith, ultraisk, arbiter, etc. If you try to change their portraits, you will end up changing the normal units' portraits as well. In order to work around this, you'll need to get pydat (fuck datedit, it's buggy as shit in Windows 7). As an example, let's say you want to change Tom Kazansky's (the wraith hero) portrait. After you open pydat, search for Tom Kazansky while you're under the "Units" tab. After you go to him, click on the "graphics" tab that is on the second row of buttons on the right side. You should see a list inside of a "Sounds" box. Look at the idle portrait one, it should say "Idle Portrait [8] = Wraith - Idle Portrait."



Let's say that in your campaign there are no khalis crystals. Click on the drop-down menu for the Idle Portrait and select the khalis crystal's IDLE PORTRAIT. Do not select the talking portrait. Click on save and save it as units.dat. Go to your mpq file and add this file (the path is arr\). Now that you have switched Tom Kazansky's portrait from the wraith one to the khalis crystal, you can replace the Khalis Crystal's portrait files in winmpq and have Tom Kazansky and a normal Terran Wraith have their own portraits. :)

Where it says Graphics = Wraith (for your case it'd be scout), change it to a unit that won't be in your mod/map/whatever. Save that file as units.dat and put it in your mod under the path of arr\. Then, change the graphics of that replacement unit and the scout's graphics will be changed. I'm pretty sure this will work (works for portraits, but I'm not sure if this exact same method will work for graphics, but I think it should). ;o Also, remember to change the replacement unit's iscript so that the frames are the same. ;o
