👻 👾 👽 💪

So as many of you have probably noticed my server has been down. Well, it's still on. It's still running ... It's just whenever I check the 'Enable' box on my router to forward port 80, all of my internet (on every port, every computer) becomes extremely erratic and stops working for several minutes every few minutes. If I ping during these periods of downtime, it seems a couple packets will make it through, but everything else times out. I haven't changed any settings or anything, I just woke up one day and it was happening.
I tried restoring factory defaults on the router and reconfiguring it, which didn't help anything ... so then I updated the firmware, which also didn't help anything. It took me a while to find that it was port 80 forwarding that was causing this trouble, and I have no idea how to fix this... So I come to you SEN.

If it helps at all, I have a Linksys WRT150N router, Firmware Version: v1.01.9.

Common connections include:
My server (my brother's desktop), connected wirelessly 24/7
My laptop, connected wirelessly most of the time
My dad's laptop, connected wirelessly sometimes

Things I have not tried, that I probably should have, are:
- Connecting the server (or any computer) with a wire.
- Turning off the server software (xD)
- Checking server logs to see if something is constantly polling my server ... I'll do that now.

Logs tell me lots of "File does not exist:" for robots.txt and favicon.ico. xD ... And that there are lots of requests trying to connect to (nonexistant) /admin, /phpmyadmin, etc. directories. O.o

Uh. It seems googlebot has found my grp-rendering script and was going through every possible link on there ...
That shouldn't be it, though ... because as soon as I mark the port forward as enabled, it starts disconnecting.

It was google. See 4th post.

How long did you have port 80 forwarded before?

So you had port 80 forwarded for hosting your webserver, and then all of a sudden without you changing anything, you realize that your internet stops working properly, and only returns normal when the port 80 forward is turned off?

Port 80's been forwarded since I got the router (a few years probably), and then before that when I first set up a server. It has never been an issue.

And that is correct. I'd say like a month ago (however long my server's been down) I started complaining (in the shoutbox xD) that my internet wasn't working properly. After about a week of that I got sick of it and started fiddling with my router to try and find what was wrong. I first tested by wiring my laptop to my modem, and I found my internet worked perfectly there. Not my modem or my ISP. Then I'd go through my router, and it would start disconnecting all the time ... So I reset everything. That appeared to work, until I reconfigured it all and put my port forwards back. As a sort of process-of-elimination, I just disabled certain features until I came across Port 80 forwarding.

Just re-enabled port 80 forwarding. Let's see what happens. Watch it be just because I made this topic it'll start working ... xD It may have been that google bot viewing this page and accessing every link ...
I'll just make a robots.txt and favicon.ico since that is what everything seems to be complaining about so very much.

Yeah ... I should have checked logs before making this topic. :P
I found the problem in there...
Collapsable Box

I just made robots.txt, so hopefully this wont happen again. xD

... Well this was a useless topic.
Now I'm asking for suggestions to prevent similar "attacks" ... >.>
Google likes to scan the EUDDB, but it isn't such a heavy load and is useful for google to have.. This was a test page that is came across. :P

Putting a speed limit on your web server should help. I have one on mine so something can't monopolize my upload bandwidth. What kind of OS is your web server on and which web server software is it?

There may be some modules for Apache to limit bandwidth, though I don't know any specifics. There are also some programs available for Windows that I had found at some point when I wanted to limit bandwidth usage of Skype on some other computer a while ago. Netlimiter, Netbalancer, and Traffic Shaper XP were some of the free ones I had found when looking around; though of those 3, only Netbalancer supported anything newer than XP, IIRC, so it was the one I used in my case. The free edition had some kind of built-in limitations to how it could be used.
