I had the bright idea to make tutorial VIDEOS, visualy displaying how to make certain things work in StarCraft Map making. Before i start this project, though, i wanted to see what you guys thought. Like, what I need to know is if you think it is worth it or not, so please, post your comments!

I think it's a great idea. I find it a lot easier to learn things from watching how it's actually done, rather than reading how to do it.

There actually already are sc map making videos out there, I don't know if old sen hosted them or linked them though.
Gerard DuGalle: "You vastly underestimate me, my dear."
Infested Kerrigan: "I don't think so, Admiral. You see, at this point... I'm pretty much the Queen Bitch of the Universe. And not all of your little soldiers or space ships will stand in my way again."

um...gay..? Gay, how specific were they? For instance the first video I want to make is the Civilian Selection System (as I call it). Like, it will show to put down a beacon put a location around it and all the damned triggers that go with it.

Been done before. Yoshi_da_Sniper made various videos regarding terrain creation, and certain other unit related systems.

um.. do you mean to say that it's been done and wasn't very good? Or just that it's not such a new concept and there's no need to be tentative about it?

I think it's a good idea - I haven't seen Yoshi's videos, but I think it wouldn't be too hard to produce some more good tutorials in video format. If you're keen on it, Tartarus, just go for it. If you do a good job people will gladly use it and promote it. Though, I'm not too sure what kind of questions mappers are asking nowadays. It certainly seems like there are lot fewer newcomers to SC - as I see it, anyway.

Well I guess I can silently monitor the UMS forum and see what new mappers are asking. Im keen on it, but people say the TeamSpeak tutorial I made to join my server is confusing... But for all I know, it could just be the program that makes it confusing. Ill make a video about something and see what y'all think.

Lol and btw guys, be proud that you guys are the friendlies Mf'ers ive ever seen in a forum community. Usualy its read and keep your mouth shut, but im glad I can help everyone.

No offence, but why would you bring up the idea if it isn't going to be you doing it?

Its a nice idea don't get me wrong, but why?

Its not hard to make a video, just go dl a program that allows you to record your desktop then go get Audicity, or SoundForge, get your mic, and record what you're doing while you're doing it...

Throw both the video and audio into Adobe Premier (or WindowsMovie Maker if you want to make only WMVs, which blow ass) and export it as an AVI or an MPEG and walla.

You have your movie.

1) What?
2) He asked why you're not making them and you respond with "ive got experience doing these sorts of things"? That makes so little sense, it blows my mind.
3) Because video files are impractical. Noone wants to download a 50mb video file so they can learn to make a trigger. It's so much easier just to read or look at a screenshot. In short: there's no reason to.

Personally, I can't say I find the idea particularily exciting, myself, mostly for the reason Killer_Kow pointed out; it's big.
With a text file, I can keep a copy of the tutorial in Notepad while I work on a map, I can search for certain words if I only need to check a single step in particular, and... I don't see how a video is really much more useful than screenshots and some reading material.
Although, if you did make one, I'd look have to look at it atleast for the sake of seeing how well it's done. xP GL.

oh come on guys ok a txt is easier to look to but if you need a visual you could hop on youtube. and i have experience making movies its what my clan does. just because i cant decide on what to do for a SC tutorial doesent mean my experience is void.

Youtube rapes the quality of any video you'd make, so that's pretty much out of the question.

OooOooohh I think it's a great idea, I mean if your willing to do it, because I remember when I was first starting out I didn't know jack and it was pretty hard to learn. And also I think it's easier to watch something to be done then read about it and then try and do it.
No use crying over every mistake,

Do one about a FAQ, Such as Grids.
Death Counters are a huge one.
AI scripts are good, Including Generic Reset point or whatever.
I bet if you Take it up with Minimoose, he might host the videos on the site.

Actually, you Could really help out by doing one for the Doodad states. (Gates, Doors.. etc.)

Yes, I'd be willing to store the movie files if you need the space.

The thing that boggles me is all the reasons people gave not to do it are either dumb or just not realy...good...reasons...so yeah ill start makin a video and itll help that itll go on SEN because making it good enough quality to go on youtube is hard but i can do it if i need to. I do this by pretty much making sure i record the right places and the right size (i use hyper cam)

I prefer picture tutorials to video tutorials. Pictures capture all the necessary parts that would be in a video, while not having a huge filesize.

The videos that Yoshi made were decent, but I think the same effect could easily have been achieved with a picture tutorial.
