Okay...you redeemed yourself. But I'm watching you.

K_A, here's the deal. I'm pretty patriotic. Granted, as I think I have said in other topics, I would rather say I'm from Colorado than I am from the States, because I think behavior is based more on what state/area you are from over what country. But there are a ton of people here who don't like America, or are looking for a fight over it. So I usually just keep quiet.

Who joined two world wars, not because they wanted to, but because they were under threat of an attack and the proceeded to end those wars that could have had gone much longer and resulted in more deaths? Then who rebuilt Japan after it was bombed?

America may have won the war, but guess who won in the end? From the WWII, Japan received:
Modern democracy
Massive aid from the US to rebuild their infrastructure
Foundations for a high-tech society
More money from the US to build munitions for the Korean War
A nearly-impregnable island with the world's most expensive military protecting it

As for what a government should do, they should protect the people from other countries as well as themselves--as in, protect its citizens from its own citizens (police to control crime) and protect its citizens from corporations (regulations to prevent health issues). Government should also help the jobless and uninsured, but only as long as the individuals receiving aid are actually trying to better themselves. Government should provide equal opportunity, but not equal rewards. The government should also try to help its economy grow.

Win by luck, lose by skill.

Not that I think this will change your attitude at all, but this is written by an American. Maybe it'll give you some idea on what other countries in the world really are like: https://americathegrimtruth.wordpress.com/

I'm not saying other countries don't have better this or that, and good lord the author of the article is probably absolutely right when it comes to healthcare, but that's a highly anti-USA rhetoric-based article, not a factual description of how life in other countries is better. There is no analysis involved in the article, just a few well-known facts and a great amount of speculation and assumptions intended to show the reader that America is a terrible place; not that other countries are better. I read it through the first time and thought to myself "oh god." I read it a second time, more carefully, and realized the extent of the rhetoric. A better idea of what other countries are like in comparison to the standard of living in the United States would come from actual comparisons of aspects of daily life (and other aspects, like healthcare) between actual countries; or better yet, talking with people like NudeRaider, Ahli, Devlin, Devourer, ect, who happen to be from Germany, or other foreigners on SEN.

Of course, if your intent was to scare the pants off us americans, then good job.

Americans like me love what our country stands for, and not so much how it's run.
It's more of an ideal than a reality that we set our standards by... if that makes any sense to you O.o

I'm clearly satisfied with my life here. Have you actually ever been to America, or are you just making conclusions based on what someone else has told you?
It would be pretty much impossible for anyone to agree on what country is better, because (and this is just a guess) people are more inclined to favor their home.

I personally, have not been to any places outside the U.S. and Canada, but from what I've heard it's not such a great place out there. Who knows? Maybe I'm just hearing the same kinds of things about you that that you are about me.

I would like to know exactly what kind of stereotypes you've heard about how awful America and its people are, so that I can dispell them for you.

Waaaallll let's start with people, shall we? We have the neo-cons who are promoting war and imperialism, and are powerful enough to achieve that goal. Then there's the fat people who eat too much of the abundance of cheap food in the USA. A normal cheeseburger in the USA is a large cheeseburger in NZ, according to some of my friends. Same with drinks. Then there's the still-rampant racism; when I think of racist countries the first one I think of is the US. sure, other countries have racists but the USA is the one that sticks out. Then there's the many people who don't vote. A democracy doesn't work very well if only 63% of the people vote. The USA has one of the highest crimes per capita in the world. Then there's that nasty federal tax you have to pay to support a federal government which isn't very good at anything except war and lying; countries like australia aren't nearly as bad with their federal government (although they're not great either). You have a corrupt banking and monetary system, a failing, largely service based economy, and are a part of the UN and NAFTA (and NATO?) indebting your country even more (although plenty of these countries have this problem. Rampant personal and state AND federal debt and overspending is rotting the country out. Your police are getting more and more Big Brother, especially organizations like the NSA; all under a show of anti-terrorism. Need I go on?

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neoconservatism "Neoconservatism in the United States is a branch of American conservatism that is most known for its advocacy of using American economic and military power to topple American enemies and promote liberal democracy in other countries."

http://www.ers.usda.gov/Briefing/CPIFoodAndExpenditures/Data/Expenditures_tables/table7.htm americans spend less than 10% of their income on food, yet http://www.cdc.gov/obesity/data/trends.html "About one-third of U.S. adults (33.8%) are obese.
Approximately 17% (or 12.5 million) of children and adolescents aged 2—19 years are obese." People in the USA spend less on food and eat more, and eat less healthily.

http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/lifestyle/diet-fitness/our-big-mac-burger-super-downsized/story-e6frf019-1225734168782 cheeseburgers are smaller in other countries.

Americans are still very racist http://futiledemocracy.wordpress.com/2011/04/13/racism-in-america-today/

http://timeswampland.files.wordpress.com/2008/12/2008turnout-report_final11.pdf only 63% of Americans voted last election. And that's the highest it's been since 1964z

http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/cri_tot_cri_percap-crime-total-crimes-per-capita the USA has one of the highest crime rates in the world (yes, other countries are higher, but we're discussing why the USA is a crappy country to live in right now; there's no perfect country and other countries have their problems too.)

http://www.cblpi.org/resources/speech.cfm?ID=14 inefficient ineffective federal government (back in 2000 but it'll be worse today)

http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/html/uscode26/usc_sec_26_00000001----000-.html federal tax rates

http://www.michaeljournal.org/fedreserve.htm corrupt fed system (not the greatest article but it gets the point across accurately).

http://lmgtfy.com/?q=corrupt+usa+banks too many sources available to bother picking out just one

http://www.heritage.org/Research/Reports/2010/08/US-Funding-of-the-United-Nations-Reaches-All-Time-High How much the UN costs the USA

http://useconomy.about.com/od/tradepolicy/p/NAFTA_Problems.htm problems with NAFTA and cost in jobs to the USA.

http://www.usdebtclock.org/ debt in the USA. I don't know how accurate this is but if it's even remotely close to reality it's pretty scary.

As for the USA being more big brother now, just research the activities of the NSA alone, not even including other secret services.
