We live in a society.

Hello SEN, I've got a bit of a medical problem. It started over a year ago when the daily vitamin that I would always take (it's a pretty big pill) decided that it wouldn't go down. After that, my throat would lock up and even though the pill would be down already, my throat would stay locked up. I wasn't actually choking choking because I was still able to breathe and talk and stuff, but it felt as if the pill were stuck in my throat and my body would act as if it were. Anything I tried to eat or drink would not go down until the sensation disappeared. It would come right back up and I'd have to spit it out. It went away in about two or three minutes. I'd been taking that daily vitamin for a year or two and I've never had any problems with pills, so it was strange. I tried the next day and for a few more days to take that pill, but my body would have the same reaction and I stopped taking that vitamin pill.

Fast forward a few months to a day in August. I eat some chicken and rice and I must have forgot to chew or something and the same thing happened. Except my throat stayed locked up for HOURS. I couldn't eat or drink anything until that lump in my throat went away. I could breathe and talk, but I couldn't even drink water. My mouth kept producing saliva which I couldn't swallow and had to continually spit out. After a few hours, it eventually went away and I was able to drink water. I moved up to tea and then some small foods and a hamburger later and was fine.

Now fast forward to today. I was having tea and dinner with my friend. I ate a chunk of meat but didn't chew it enough. It got stuck in my throat and went down, but it still feels as if it's there. I haven't been able to eat or drink, but I've been able to talk and breathe just fine. My body is still producing saliva which I can't swallow, so I've been spitting into a cup for about two and a half hours.

Any ideas why my body decided to handle things being stuck in my throat like this so suddenly?
Any ideas on what I can do to fix this? I'd like to reheat my dinner and eat it. And not have to spit into a cup every two minutes because I keep salivating and can't do anything about it.

Difficulty swallowing
False sensation of throat obstruction

Random relevant shit
Achlasia

I had a problem similar to this, I think. I'm not sure if it started with a pill for me, but I was having throat issues for a while about a year ago. Some foods, especially bread, chicken, or rice, would get stuck in my throat and i would start to choke, once I got the food out however, I would produce a lot of saliva and be unable to swallow it, and I can relate to the spitting in a cup factor. What I discovered helps is grabbing a glass of water and trying to drink it slowly, but steadily. It will feel like you're going to choke and cough water everywhere, but if you can keep from gagging it should clear your throat.

I eventually saw a doctor about my issue. They tried a number of things including throat x-rays and shoving a camera down my throat (which didn't make it all the way down). I'm cured of this problem today because of Prilosec, I believe. It helped with my indigestion (do you have heartburn or vomit-tasting burps as well?) and got rid of the swallowing problem. Hope that helps you out.

I was going to suggest it was completely in your mind, but hours of that? Doesn't seem like it. Doctor's your best bet, SEN is. . . SEN.

I'm not trying to be a troll or anything,
but I think you go should see a doctor.

You'd never know if it may have very harmful complications down the road.

The Internet is a wonderful source of diagnoses! It's helped with my own unknown medical problem. Not with solving, but with giving me a possible cause that isn't neurological.

Yeah, so I went to sleep, hoping it would be fine in the morning. It isn't. I think it's about time I stop being stubborn and have medical attention.

Relatively ancient and inactive

How do you sleep having to spit every two minutes?

YOU WERE ALL THINKING IT!

Here's some broscience. Isn't that part of your throat where sounds are created (voice box... sorta) fibrous? Maybe that pill pushed it's way and displaced it and it left some strands sticking out that catch what goes down your throat?

We live in a society.

Spent 2.5 hours in a waiting room at a crowded doctor's office. The doctor saw me and told me that they don't have the equipment for something like this at the office and that I should be in the ER. She did say that it's possible that something is still stuck in there, but she isn't sure. I'm still spitting out my saliva because I can't swallow it and hopefully I won't get too dehydrated before they can do something about this. Heading out to the ER next.

Just here for the activity... well not really

Did they diagnosis you with anything, or did they just claim you were sick beyond their help?

They suggested possible causes, but said I'd need an endoscopy and stuff to see what was going on in there.

Herp derp.

So, I went to the ER. After much waiting, I finally saw a doctor and talked with him and they said I'd get an endoscopy. After much waiting (again), I was admitted into the OR. They knocked me out for about 30 minutes during the endoscopy, which involved shoving a tube with a camera down my throat. I woke up and the doctor told me that the chunk of meat was still in there. He had me drink a cup of water, saying I should be able to swallow. It hurt a little, but it was a pretty damn good cup of water. So, I had some juices and they discharged me after another hour or so of waiting and making sure I was OK.

I'm back home. It hurts to swallow a bit, but I can swallow my own saliva, drink stuff, and eat soft foods. I'm assuming it'll get better with time.

He also suggested that I might have this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eosinophilic_esophagitis
That's apparently an allergic reaction, but the things I'm allergic to are not food.

Are you sure about that?

So what are the doctors planning to do about it? ;o

But seriously, he's right. My sister had no food allergies till she was 20, then suddenly became allergic to walnuts and cashews. Scary stuff, but it happens.
