What about giving Veterans++ (or Regulars++ ?) an option to always have the shoutbox refresh on?
Or if you're against this idea, then what about simply making the fact that you've checked the little box last even though you've loaded a new page. As long as the current window tab wouldn't have been closed, it should stay activated.

How does rank have to do with any of this?
I remember Devourer explaining to me that making the ShoutBox always refresh for every single site user would cause an overflow of request for the server.
It's just a way to reduce the amount of users this request would be made for.
Get it?

Someone should code a shoutbox in flash xP

Hehe Neki has a point...
I am not really a fan of the shoutbox. I only ever see it if my hand slips and I scroll all the way to the bottom of the page anyway. And I only really shout in it if I see someone link to something profound and interesting...
I think a passive auto-refress buff for all Regulars / Veterans would put far too many requests on our already-burdened little donkey of a server. Note, the donkey metaphor expresses that I know jackshit about servers... or donkeys for that matter.
C'mon... give us an IRC channel!

You can set the SB to be at the top.

Making an auto-refresh ShoutBox item would be epic! It could cost something like 1k.

Thats practically everyone that uses the shoutbox. But it still limits the amount of queries, which is the only point as to why restricting the feature to certain ranks.
None.
If anything this would be an item in the store, but from what I'm told it really would slow down the site way too much. As for the IRC shoutbox, that has been suggested many, many times before and it has never changed.

just make auto refresh only work if you're in the shoutbox. Most people have tabbed browsing, so you can easily switch over to it to see what's going on. But honestly, it's one check mark, and if you just leave that tab open all the time, you never have to re-check it.

If you're still using IE6, you deserve to miss out on half of the Internet. That's why I've never once tested any code I've written for SEN in IE6. >:3

ANYWAY:

Auto-refresh is JS... Could make it so that Global Shoutbox only autorefreshes when it's actually visible on-screen. Not sure off the top of my head how to check that, though.

So I heard you use IE6...
There are some things Microsoft is good at, and then there's Bing and IE.
As far as global shoutbox auto-refresh, simply code it into the global shoutbox page...I mean, we could even use the item suggested to enable this, rather than automatically give it to all to further reduce the server strain, if everyone decided to use the global shoutbox at the same time.Global = Everywhere

ThisI was saying that if autorefresh is enabled for the Global Shoutbox, one could save on AJAX requests by using JavaScript to check if the Global Shoutbox is visible on the page; if so, autorefresh; if not, do nothing.
Of course, the only way for that to be usable would be for someone to fix that one bug where refreshing the Shoutbox only returns the last 8 shouts. (Or was that fixed already?)
