I think I'll be restarting this project. But I stupidly don't have my bad-ass desktop pc with me at Uni (yet) so it'll have to wait until February-ish. And, hopefully I still have my resources and assets for it on my desktop pc... Had a bit of a 'cleaning spree' when I realised my 500gb limit was nearly full!
Anyways on to the good stuff:

Edit: the game will work by items spawning randomly (scaled to the number of races in play) across the region of play.
So, as players are running around acquiring these items they will want to shoot at other players to stop them from acquiring items. As they inevitably make you stronger/more versatile. When you are killed, you lose all your items and your weapon. Your weapon is replaced immediately when you walk over a weapon-pickup whilst holding shift.
General abilities for the other races we can assume to be things like Blink, Charge, Force Fields, Guardian Shields, Shield Recharge, Black Hole Generator, with weapons such as Particle Disrupter's, Psi Blades (thrown of course
, Phase Blasters. And for Zerg, things like Burrow, Pounce, Metabolic Boost, Broodling Swarm, Chitinous Plating Morph, with weapons such as Needle Spines, Acidic Bile, Glaive Wurms and Talons. Additional things for Terran could be Spider Mines, G4-Cluster Bombs, Seeker Missiles, Tactical Nuke, Reaper Jetpacks, etc.
The more I think about it, the more I think I should orientate this map around powerups. With the game launching, players can vote on which powerups should be in the game, their spawn frequencies, things like respawn times (for players) and the game mode. Maybe certain game modes will allow players to purchase their items based on how successful they were in the previous round. Other modes will be entirely random as in, each player will receive a quantity of these items/powerups and a random weapon each round and have to make do with what they receive.
The major challenge is going to be balancing the powerups across the three (and eventually 6) races. However, I think the Advanced (unlockable) races will simply get the bonus of being able to use multiple race items.
