So, for about 2 months now - I have been pottering about, learning my way through the new and improved (read: convoluted and useless) galaxy editor. Finally, what started off as a bit of terraining practice has turned into my newest project. The terrain (in my opinion) looked pretty nice. And then the concept sort of fell into place while I was testing 'movers' and 'missiles' along with 'collision detection'... Anyways, I'l keep a more or less accurate changelog and progress in here. I will need some alpha testers (in-house testing) maybe towards the end of october, so watch this space :)

Codename: Warzone (a better, cooler, more apt name is soon to come)
Type: Custom Battle
Modes: Deathmatch - Capture the Flag - King of the Hill - Team Survival
Features: 6 Unique Weapons and 4 even more Unique Abilities
Cool Features: Full collision-detection for Missiles into a) Terrain and b) Doodads
More Cool Stuff: Advanced Lighting Triggers - Flashbangs that white-out your opponents screen
More Lightning: A Day/Night Cycle with a sunset/sunrise...








And of course, any suggestions, feedback, criticisms and flames are welcome.

I do stuff and thingies... Try widening and reducing the number of small nooks and crannies to correct the problem.

Is this going to be a first person shooter or a 3rd person shooter?

Is this in production phase or testing phase? (Because if there is no "playable" map, this belongs to map production [I can/will move this topic there, if it isn't one.]).
Playable in which gateway?

Anyway, your terrain really looks good so far. :)

@Ahli: Yes. There is no 'playable' version available yet. Feel free to move this to whatever section of the forum you feel is better. To answer your other question, it is neither a First Person or a Third Person shooter. If you ever played Warlocks in Warcraft 3 - it will be (slightly) similar to this, except set in the Starcraft 2 era.

@Payne: I am new to this forum. But the Map Nights seems a nice way to showcase/playtest my map. I will definitely consider it. I'm afraid that my friends over at TDG and the Hiveworkshop might get first dibs on an alpha test though :)...

Are there many people on the Europe realm? I don't think Battle.net 0.2 supports cross-regional play/map sharing.

Quick progress report:

Terrain of Zone A (pictured above) is about 50% complete.
Regions - Spawns, collision detection, ammo drops, random effects are about 80% complete.

Abilities - There will of course be Blink (for protoss Warriors), Burrow (for zerg Warriors) and Stimpack/Sprint (for terran Warriors).
In addition to these abilities, there will be atleast 3 others added for the alpha test. Relating to the ways your weapon works, reloading, and various other modifiers.
There will be 3 weapons per race in the alpha version , and they will have a spawn frequency relevant to the number of each race playing the game...

The Map Nights are currently only hosted on the US server, unfortunately. :(

Changing of subject: it looks like you have great mapping skills. If ever you are willing too, feel free to share your knowledge by creating some wikis! :)

If I am honest, everything I have learnt about the Galaxy Editor has been either through looking over tutorials (with varying degrees of relevance/help) and just messing about in the Data Editor... I spend a lot of time continuing to do this - and as soon as I figure out how one thing works, about three or four new things occur to me that I want to explore... If I ever find the time or enthusiasm to share something that no-one else has uncovered (or is likely to uncover) I will make a wiki for it...

Quick Edit: I noticed the wiki is missing something vital like 'creating units from scratch'... So, I've started drafting a tutorial/lesson in there... I'm gonna head back to my flat and get into the Galaxy Editor to make it a bit more useful :)

Update: This project is currently on hiatus.

I have been devoting more and more of my time to my RPG project Shattered Lands (Working Title)

The reason that I am halting this project is due to a few reasons. Mostly IRL issues, such as university and priorities. The other, perhaps more fundamental reason, is that following BlizzCon 2010 - Patch 1.2 will allow for mouse-tracking functionality. Which is something I really wanted to incorporate into this map. We will see post patch 1.2 whether I will begin working on this map again. Mainly, whether or not Key-Press lag is reduced.

If anyone wants to take up this project, just get in touch and I'll send the resources your way.

Bumpedy bamp.

I think I'll be restarting this project. But I stupidly don't have my bad-ass desktop pc with me at Uni (yet) so it'll have to wait until February-ish. And, hopefully I still have my resources and assets for it on my desktop pc... Had a bit of a 'cleaning spree' when I realised my 500gb limit was nearly full! :O

Anyways on to the good stuff:

Edit: the game will work by items spawning randomly (scaled to the number of races in play) across the region of play.

So, as players are running around acquiring these items they will want to shoot at other players to stop them from acquiring items. As they inevitably make you stronger/more versatile. When you are killed, you lose all your items and your weapon. Your weapon is replaced immediately when you walk over a weapon-pickup whilst holding shift.

General abilities for the other races we can assume to be things like Blink, Charge, Force Fields, Guardian Shields, Shield Recharge, Black Hole Generator, with weapons such as Particle Disrupter's, Psi Blades (thrown of course ;), Phase Blasters. And for Zerg, things like Burrow, Pounce, Metabolic Boost, Broodling Swarm, Chitinous Plating Morph, with weapons such as Needle Spines, Acidic Bile, Glaive Wurms and Talons. Additional things for Terran could be Spider Mines, G4-Cluster Bombs, Seeker Missiles, Tactical Nuke, Reaper Jetpacks, etc.

The more I think about it, the more I think I should orientate this map around powerups. With the game launching, players can vote on which powerups should be in the game, their spawn frequencies, things like respawn times (for players) and the game mode. Maybe certain game modes will allow players to purchase their items based on how successful they were in the previous round. Other modes will be entirely random as in, each player will receive a quantity of these items/powerups and a random weapon each round and have to make do with what they receive.

The major challenge is going to be balancing the powerups across the three (and eventually 6) races. However, I think the Advanced (unlockable) races will simply get the bonus of being able to use multiple race items.
  • Hybrid can use Zerg and Protoss weapons/powerups
  • Abomination can use Protoss and Terran weapons/powerups
  • Infested can use Zerg and Terran weapons/powerups
