I'm looking for programs in photo editing and sound editing. Most preferably sound editing, because I am in need of that for a starcraft map.

For making beats, use fruity loops or LMMS. LMMS is free, fruity loops is better.

As Lotus said, for photo editing Photoshop is by far the best on the marked on any platform. You can download a trial version at Adobes website, but you need to register first and the file is rather large. You can also go for GIMP. It's a highly lightweighten program that offers many features similiar to Photoshop. GIMP's free but not particularly easy to use for editing photographs specifically. It's tricky, but I use it, so if you need help with it, PM me.
Audacity's extremely basic; for creating sounds and simple editing, it'll work, but anything beyond basic and it's useless. I once tried to use it to make a clip of Cartman singing "Pokerface" loop. I succeeded... after many, many hours and a lot of frustration. (And then I found out that the clip was sufficiently long enough that my cell phone would never actually loop it. All that work for nothing...)

Audacity, though again, you'll probably have trouble using it for anything advanced.

I've used Audacity in the past and it went pretty well.
But if you really want my trick, I always use a movie editing software when I work with sounds. All I do at the end is to export it as a high quality wav.

Well, the standard old school windows recording program can do that, haha! .. It both records, show waves and allows you to cut, simple, easy and defintly limited on features. But cmon, who havn't had fun recording somethin init and slowing/speeding it up for fun effects!

Relatively ancient and inactive
If you actually want slight photo editing and no extras, I recommend Picasa for photos. It's a photo-management tool - has nice filters to improve color, has face-recognition/naming and can, with enough data, actually guess the people in new photos based off named in old photos, it comes with a kick-ass photo viewer (instead of default windows one) and can do basic retouching to remove blemishes and such. It integrates with Google's Picasa photo-hosting service for instant uploads, which is nice.
If you want to do advanced stuff, Photoshop is best, GIMP is best free alternative. Other cheaper-than-Photoshop-but-not-free alternatives are Photoshop Elements and Corel Paint Shop Pro.
