Are you sure about that?

Usually romanized or referred to as "Unthinkable Natural Law", this Touhou title is actually a fighting game, unlike most of its predecessors.

Hisoutensoku differs from the other games in the Touhou Project series in that instead of being a Shoot-em-up, it is a fighting game with a heavy slant toward projectiles. It features a variety of 20 different Touhou Project characters. It also features a weather system that can affect the tides of battle, a 20 card deck system, and flight, which is vital to approaching enemies and dodging enemy attacks.

There are three basic attack buttons which when combined with a sequence of direction keys (like in most fighting games) will trigger different kinds of attacks of magic or physical nature. magic attacks are powerful, but limited by "spirit orbs" which are recovered over a period of time of not using "spirit" attacks. Most, if not all spirit attacks can be dodged by using moves that "graze", such as dashing at any direction or flying. Blocking spirit attacks damages your own spirit orbs, limiting your own spirit abilities and sometimes even breaking your guard.

Physical attacks tend to be faster, but you need to be up close. Some characters are however very dependent on physical abilities, and can be a real threat even to those based on spirit attacks. The characters tend to rely on different types of gameplay, ranging from characters that blast foes with powerful magic, to fast moving and physically powerful characters, even to characters that just mindfuck you with abilities that disable your own powers or simply make playing confusing

As you damage your opponent, you may "draw" up to 5 cards from a pre-selected 20-card deck you may customize anytime by accessing the game's menu when not playing. Drawing cards is pretty much like filling a "special" bar in other fighting games. When you fill the slot for a card, the card is now available for use. Using a card puts its effect in play and consumes it, with no way of getting it back. There are 3 types of spell cards:

Skill Cards, which power up your current spirit abilities or change them into an alternate version.
Spell Cards, which unleash powerful attacks or supportive abilities. These cards usually consume cards other than themselves. In this sense, the most powerful Spell Cards consume up to 5 cards.
System Cards, which power up passive abilities such as offense, defense, speed, or have various effects such as changing the current weather, send your opponent flying to the other side of the screen, cut through "delay" animations, etc.

The spell card system makes the game VERY customizable, as you may play many different versions of the same character, specially thanks to Skill Cards.

Getting familiar to the game does not take very long, and it can be a fun experience to experimentation with combos of physical/spirit/spell attacks can be really fun and competitive, just like any fighting game.

Like most fighting games, it features multiplayer options, and Netplay for this game is built in, so you can play with other people you know.. That is the whole point of the thread, to get people into this game and have some fun smashing keys to fight each other online.

The game itself is an expansion to a previous fighting game known as Scarlet Weather Rhapsody. You need to have both games in order to play the game properly. All you need to do to play properly is open "configex123.ini" in your Hisoutensoku folder, and direct the following line to your SWR folder:
"[th105path]
path=x:\path\to\SWR\folder"

Once you get the game, you need to install the 1.10 patch [download] and the translation patch [download]. You may also download the character and spell cards unlock since they actually take pretty long to unlock and, honestly, the point of this game is netplay, not single player mode. Here is the link for said unlock [download]

If you need ANY kind of help, ranging from where to obtain this game to how to set it up, you may PM me and I will most gladly assist you.

Neat. I almost invariably dislike fighting games, personally, but sometimes I enjoy watching people play them.

Plus watching prepubescent fantasy anime angel girls beat each other senseless is also fun.

zun, you so crazy. Music doesn't live up to touhou standards.

Your comments only get more and more confusing. I am not sure of whether or not they are positive or negative Q_Q. The music for the videos in which the fight takes place at the same stage is not the game's music though.

Neutral. I have to give him props for both making a game in this day and age with street fighter graphics (and looks like gameplay too), but also have to disapprove for the same reasons. It's 2010 (2007) and everyone has a 3d card. He certainly has reinvented the fighting genre with the flying and ranged attacks, and it looks like it should be successful, but again, he came too late. Therefore, zun is crazy. (on top of that, his "team" consists of just him).

I don't like the music very much either in the video, but you're saying that's not the game music? That leads me to believe there is no music.

Windom seems like it has a similar theme of flying/ranged attack fighting, but is completely 3d (looks terrible, but still, 3d). Unfortunately, it's not a classic fighting game, so we can't really compare them properly, and obviously have completely different playstyles.

This game would have been x10 times better with sounds for every little thing. Mainly voices. I loved playing Marvel Vs Capcom just to have a Cyclops, Wolverine, and iron man team to spam "OPTIC FLAAASH" "TORNADO CLAAAW" "TARGET AQUIRED". Still I like the card system used because it reminds me a lot of Marvel Vs. Capcom with their character types (Air combo, Expansion, Ranged, Healing, etc types) so that you could play each character a little bit differently. Still could use a little bit of updating but I could of sworn I saw something (probably wikipedia) that the guy had planned a third fighter coming up.

Fanon games. ZUN is so never making a game in 3d. The closest fanon to a 3d fighting game would be Touhou TF2 or probably Touhou DOTA.

ZUN is pretty much the only one working on these games; it's difficult to make 3D games with a single coder and artist.

Unless, of course, he somehow manages a 3D danmaku. Then I will shit brix.

Dammit phobos. You didn't even look. You just guessed when you tried to play online with me. If you had looked around you would know Hamachi is un favored by other players and the built in net play is just fine. More importantly that you need to enter the IP address in x.x.x.x:port format to use the clipboard tool.

I'd like to think thats what was keeping us from playing at least. ;D

Sorry, might take me a little while to get to this. I'm still trying to beat Touhou game #6 on Normal difficulty.

Finally started playing two days ago and I have the sneaking suspicion that characters' power levels correspond to their canon strengths, meaning everyone > Cirno and Yuyuko > Youmu, etc. But that aside, this is going to take a while to get used to since I haven't really played a fighting game before :awesome:. I wasn't born in the arcade age anyways ><.

I decided to pick Utsuho as a starter character given the massive damage output; I haven't yet gotten used to defending/grazing on demand to avoid attacks so I reasoned that if I deal enough damage fast enough I won't die from the enemy's attacks. This certainly works on AIs: I can go 2-0 against them in Lunatic without losing much health. But this strategy doesn't work against real players who actually know how to dodge/graze/dash.

Practicing against #hisouten people doesn't help: they curbstomp me with full HP and I can't really do anything. Lunatic AI disappoints too. :x Guess I'll have to make do with trial-and-error.

Youmu is better than Yuyuko. Her corner pressure is unrivaled in this game... Although, it takes a good deal of skill to learn how to put pressure on the enemy. Do not play against people in Hisouten unless you are really willing to lose over 9000 times against them. Instead, play against me and MZ, the people who are the closest to your skill level.

Also, 3rd round Fantasy Heaven :awesome:

If you'd like you can practice your Youmu against my Yuyuko. I'd like to think I'm the yuyu king in these parts :3

Yuyuko is my main.
