Back when I bought this Dell XPS 430 (or something) computer, it'd come with a Dell remote control. I was never able to get it working. It was probably a driver problem; maybe I need to somehow connect to it first. Here, I found the link of the remote on the Dell website:
http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/products/Controllers/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&sku=412-0991 . I'd basically like it to work with VLC or MPC-HC and Zune, and it would be nice if it could work with more. It's was made for my computer as a Vista, but I've since upgraded to W7; additionally, it'd be nice if I could choose whether it could control my Dell PC or Sony laptop. I use my laptop to watch movies on my TV (lappy's connected to an external HD and to our TV via HDMI; pretty awesome), and though a wireless mouse works, it's not as inherently awesome as using a remote.
I wonder at what point my requests become too much for SEN's tech section to handle.
EDIT: I found TightVNC on my computer, which is apparently a tool through which I can remotely connect to my computer in front of my TV. Anyone have any experience with this or know how to get it working? O_o. I'd still like to directly control my computers, but I suppose this would be nice..

None.
Did it come with a USB receiver unit, or is it built into the computer?
None.

I don't recall there being anything to actually connect it to the computer. Just a remote. It runs on batteries.
None.
You need an IR receiver for it to work. It might be on the front of the case. Check devmgmt.msc (device manager).
