SEN Week-Long Mapping Contest Week #2

All submissions are due May 9th, 2010, by 11:59:59PM EST
Deadline moved due to a unanimous decision by judges and at the request of participants. If there isn't a good turnout
as a result of this action, we will not do it again. Ever. So take advantage of the additional 24 hours.

All submissions are now due May 10th, 2010, by 11:59:59PM EST

Welcome Back!
This is will be the second installment of the new series of week-long mapping contests to be held at SEN! If you noticed, it's name has been changed from the Bi-Weekly contest, to the new "Week-Long Contest" due to the fact that we are really glad about the hype that seems to have been developed from the new mapping contests and figured that if there is an overwhelming need for a break, we can do so. As most of you may know, this specific contest payne has offered to give one of his StarCraft 2 beta keys away! Future contests may or may not hand out rewards, so don't expect to just pass this one up and try next time~! Not to mention that bragging rights will always be a major factor in participating in these contests; a score board for rankings will be kept in each contest's original post. This is a second shot to get your name into this list!

Specifications
  • All maps will be judged by a handful of pre-determined judges based on a set criteria.
  • The maps to be submit must adhere to the prescribed theme.
  • There is no specification for an amount of players.
  • Mapping teams are not allowed.
  • Mod supplements are not allowed. Although maps with mods can be submit for fun, they will not be judged (this includes Farty's EUD enabler).
  • Maps started previous to the starting of this contest are not allowed.
  • Only one map per participant may be submit in each contest.
  • Late maps may be submit, but are not guaranteed to be judged, and will not count towards the rankings.

Theme
The theme that each of the maps need to adhere to is: Short Story

Have you noticed how our themes are pretty much open-ended? This time we have no way of making sure that maps started prior to the contest aren't submitted, but be sure we will smash you if we ever find out. As long as the map's story or gameplay focuses on a relatively simply design, aiming at the map to be in theory, short. Just make a nice little playable story to score full points for the Theme category.

Quote from CecilSunkure
Example Ideas for a Map:
  • The journey to finding your lost dog Skip.
  • Helping a baby dragon pillage a village.

Judging Criteria
Gameplay: 10 points
  • Does the map keep the player's constant attention?
  • Is the map too hard, too easy?
  • Is the map actually fun?
Originality: 10 points
  • Was the entire idea copied from someone else? If so, did you shape the idea into something unique?
  • Is your map not just a Final Fantasy or AoS clone?
Aesthetics: 10 points
  • How shiny is your map? How polished?
  • Is your terrain blocky in places?
  • Was the only terrain tool you used the Rectangular Brush?
  • Do you have proper grammar?
Theme: 5 points
  • Did you just use the intro to tell the story?
  • Was the story well thought out?
  • It's not a movie map, right?
Completion: 5 points
  • Are there major bugs?
  • Is the map complete?
  • Do you use the entire map's space?
  • Was there any more you could have done?

Judges
  • Loveless
  • CecilSunkure
  • UnholyUrine

Bi-Weekly means every other week... The last contest went from Apr 20 2010 to April 28th, 2010 11:59:59PM EST... or roughly one week long, therefore, unless the two contests were to intersect with each other (unlikely), it -has- to be every other week.

Unless you wanna start having them every week, fix it. I told you a thousand times, bi-weekly is every other week, except in Britain where biweekly is the same as semiweekly.

First post.

We did. Way before you posted, it's been changed from Bi-Weekly to Weekly. However, it is extremely tentative as to what day we will start it and sometimes a week could pass by without us posting up a new contest. It will be held at the judges' digression.

Congrats to everyone from the last round. The field was unbelievably strong, and it's an honour to come out on top. I don't know if I have time to participate in this round, but I'll definitely keep my eye out for quality maps from you lot. Best of luck, gentlemen!

Just here for the pie

I've started my map and have done quite a bit of work already. At least I know that if I don't finish it entirely, I can at least release a demo/beta.

To people who are having trouble or are looking for inspiration

How to Raise a Dragon -- Perfect example of a short story game.

Chibi Knight -- Straight up Short RPG. Tho not as amazingly written as the "How to raise a Dragon" game, the gameplay in this one is great!

GL everyone =D

Hey, glad to know you're all going to participate!

Just to let you all know ahead of time: I'm also participating in this contest. I won't judge my map, and the other two judges will judge my map as if I were a normal contestant. I won't be participating for the beta key, more of to try and get on the rankings.

I wish everyone good luck!

I might participate because there is this short single player game I've had in mind for a while. I'm not really into single player games on SC but making a short one in one week doesn't sound bad. Even though I doubt my skills I'm gonna try to make something interesting =) gl all

On the one hand, fuck insurance companies and UHC is one of the worst. On the other hand, vigilante justice isn't ideal. Definitely not shedding any tears for the fallen CEO, and most likely wouldn't have reported the killer if I had been the one to spot him.
