Portable StarCraft?

I have a legal copy of SC/SCBW. I want to be able to run it off my iPod (which is enabled for disk use, so it functions as a 120GB flash drive) while at school -- preferably without the CD and with the latest patch. CD-less campaign access and downgradability are optional, but would be very nice. Legality is a must -- I'd prefer to do this without piracy, if that's at all possible.

Anyone know where I can get the tools to legally set this up, or how to legally create such a setup myself?

...
1) Install SC on a computer
2) Copy the SC directory to your iPod
3) Run it off your iPod. Obviously only the newer version will work, since they have the no CD patch. If you want older versions, you can use SCLoader2b (or chaos launcher?).

I use to do this too (with my 64 GB iPod video). :P

- patch 1.15.2
---------------------
Feature Changes

- StarCraft and StarCraft: BroodWar no longer require the CD while playing the game. To play without the CD, please follow the following instructions:

Windows Users:
- Make sure you have "Hide extensions for known types" unchecked. To do this please use the following steps:
- Click Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Windows Explorer
- Click on Tools -> Folder options (Windows Vista users may have to press the Alt key to see the tools option at the top of the window)
- Click on the View Tab In the list, look for the "Hide extensions for known file types" option, and make sure that it is unchecked.
- Click OK to save the changes.
- Now you will need to copy some files from the Game CDs

- If you own only StarCraft, copy "INSTALL.EXE" from the StarCraft CD to your StarCraft folder and rename it to "StarCraft.mpq".

- If you own StarCraft: Brood War, copy "INSTALL.EXE" from the StarCraft: Brood War CD to your StarCraft folder and rename it to "BroodWar.mpq". If you wish to play the StarCraft original missions then please copy and rename the install file from the original StarCraft CD as well, as listed directly above.
If you do it for both StarCraft and BroodWar then you can play both campaigns. If you do it for only one, you can still play this campaign.
StarCraft does not need to be registered/installed to run. But you have to copy a folder where it's been installed to.

Sweet. Doing that now. Thanks for the help.

One question: how well does this run? (In terms of startup time, etc.) Does SC frequently read/write to the disk it's installed on? If it reads/writes often, is there a way to minimize the frequency of these operations to avoid potentially shortening my iPod's lifespan?

None.

It should run fine. SC's main limiter is ram, and 512mb ram is more than enough. The loading screen at start up is slightly longer (maybe 1-2 seconds).
As for your iPod's lifespan... (Trying to remember what I read...) If a 4gb USB 2.0 is booted off of, and used as the main HD of a computer, it will last about 3 months, if used 8 hours a day, every day - so like 720 hours of use. Playing sc shouldn't have a noticeable effect on your iPod life (unless you plan on playing SC off it 2 hours a day every day for the next 4 years).

Starcraft's copyright ran out in 2007... So that should mean it is legal anyways, right?

Can I put this on a flashdrive? And would it run out of space eventually too?

Newb, it works just fine off a flash. 'Course, you need to also follow the instructions in Nude's post to get it working without a CD. As for increasing space, you'd only start to run out if you saved too many screenshots, games, replays, or maps.

I actually had to upgrade my flash drive 3 times (512mb -> 2gb ->8 gb) because I had too many maps :/

Why don't you just copy it to the local computer hard drive and run it off of there?

You can just play it from a flash drive ... There is no harm or problem with that.

Wouldn't it run the game slower?

Not at all. Programs run in memory, so where it is stored is entirely irrelevant.

Only when it needs to read/write to the disk (when loading itself or any files). Overall speed decrease should be negligible, and non-existent during gameplay.

That's interesting because without screenshots I have 75 files in my SC folder.

Which is exactly why I gave that list. :P If you want a portable version, I assume you want a bare installation (no staredit, no useless stuff that gets shoved in there, etc.)

You will be constantly reading/writing from the flash memory if you load maps frequently. Keep in mind flash memory can only be read/written to a finite number of times.

It's enough to boot windows and use it for about 720 hours.

It would still only be read. And, as far as I know, it can only be written to a finite number of times.

And the finite number of times is more than you'll likely ever run into.
