Figured people would be interested in this:
http://gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2010/03/05/april-cover-revealed.aspx

Valve have recently run a viral campaign by including new elements into the original Portal, where a radio would play new sound files at specific spots in the game. Extracting the sound files resulted in an MD5 hash, that was brute-forced to reveal a phone number near Valve's headquarters. Connecting to the number using telnet resulted in many ascii art images being downloaded, some of which were asciified screenshots from Portal, as well as pictures that resembled new robots, and the turrets from Portal, and pictures of GLADoS. See Halflife2.net for more info.

Oh, and Valve even updated the ending for Portal itself. It is only very mildly tweaked: when you are lying on the pavement with the wreckage of Aperture Labs raining down on you, a robot approaches from behind and says "Thank you for assuming the party escort submission position" and starts dragging you away. The field of view isn't changed from the original ending, you just hear the sound effects and the camera starts being tugged backwards; you don't get to see the robot at all. Here's a youtube vid:

Edit: Changed the original thread title from "Portal 2 announced 2010 holiday" to "Portal 2 released" to better reflect current posts in this thread.

Portal 2? In co-op? Awesome. 2010 feels fantastic while 2009 felt disappointing. Though I have a personal belief that Episode 3 will be announced this year, eventually. But Valve believes Portal 2 sounds more interesting.

I also predict that each player will have a portal gun restricted to shooting out one portal. Player 1 is restricted to shooting only the orange portal while Player 2 is restricted to shooting only the blue portal.

Perhaps it's time for me to create another Portal StarCraft map

Agreed. There are just so many awesome games coming out this year.

I just cannot wait for the day, when playing Half-Life 2 Episode 3/ Half-Life 3/ onwards, where I can officially wield a portal gun and the gravity gun as one man (Not in the G-Mod).

This is only because Episode 2 confirmed that two games are set in the same universe.

In an interview with Eurogamer, Gabe Newell revealed that the Half-Life 2 "episodes" are essentially Half-Life 3.[90] He reasons that rather than force fans to wait another six years for a full sequel, Valve Corporation would release the game in episodic installments.[90] Newell admits that a more correct title for these episodes should have been "Half-Life 3: Episode One" and so forth, having referred to the episodes as Half-Life 3 repeatedly through the interview.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Narbacular_Drop

Quote from name:Link Above this Quote
After the release of Narbacular Drop, Valve, developers of the Half-Life series, discovered it and hired the entire development team to work for them. The team developed Portal, a spiritual successor to Narbacular Drop, using the same basic concept. In Portal, the player takes the role of a test subject tasked with trying out the "Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device", and along the way discovers that the test facility has been abandoned mysteriously. The main antagonist is a sentient artificial intelligence named GLaDOS, similar to the demon in Narbacular Drop. The game was released on October 10, 2007 on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, as part of The Orange Box, to critical and commercial success.
Narbacular Drop was a game made by about 7 DigiPen students, all of which were hired by Valve to run the creation of Portal :)

Needless to say, I am extremely excited for Portal 2!!

- GlaDOS returns as the antagonist.
- Chell returns, and we play as her.
- Portal 2 takes place a long time after the original. Hundreds of years, in fact. The complex has overgrown.
- Those orbs seen at the end of Portal are personality orbs. They've cornered off sections of the labs as their own, and are concerned about the decaying state of the complex.
- Portal gun remains unchanged.
- Physics will now be part of portal puzzle solving. EG: A vent that sucks air in can be combined with a portal to 'suck' from a different location.
- "Paint" mechanic, various liquid substances that cause some reaction. For example, in the demo shown a orange substance on the floor caused Chell to be propelled upwards. Using portals you can apply these 'paints' to other areas of the level for puzzle solving.
- Reflection cubes will allow Chell to reflect lazers for various puzzles.
- The co-op campaign will have you playing as two bipedal robots. The like to hold hands.
- Splitscreen for people playing on the console, and 'picture in picture' available for those playing remote co-op (eg: PC). This allows you to easily communicate with the other player and combine efforts for puzzle solving.

"We're a lot alike, you and I. You tested me. I tested you. you killed me. I - oh, no, wait. I guess I haven't killed you yet. Well. Food for thought during this next test."

That looks cool. So the co-op buddy is a robot?

Both co-op characters are robots. One is a modified personality sphere, the other is a modified turret.

I suspect that the co-op campaign will be set shortly, or a few years, after Portal, and possibly interact with Episode 3 to some extent. Whereas the main single player campaign with Chell is set several hundred years later, so the chances of that storyline interacting with Episode 3's is remote.

After reading the coop part, they mentioned that it's four portals.

Portal 2 comes out next week, 19th April. If you pre-order it on Steam you get 10% off.

Valve have posted a comic that ties what happened between Portal 1 and Portal 2 together. It's pretty good.

Well there goes the speculation as to what the hell happened to the labs.

Anyone else think Portal will tie into Half Life eventually? I don't think it's any coincidence that Portal 2 was developed before the long promised continuation.

Did you play Episode 2?

Anyway, I have my copy reserved for the Xbox 360, and look forward to some co-op with my buddies online.
The level customization sounds pretty cool too!

An artist's depiction of an Extended Unit Death

I'm surprised this wasn't brought up yet, but Valve has been doing a set of "Aperture Investment Opportunity" promos for Portal 2.

Aperture Investment Opportunity 1-4

I'm a little excited for this game. The first Portal only took me a few hours on my first run through, which was disappointing because I had heard from friends that it was very challenging.

The Co-op mode of Portal 2 particularly sounds intriguing to me.

If I get it, it will be the PC version.
