jjf28 -- you certainly aren't saving on total map bytes

jjf28 -- starcraft will probably read all header information for the STR section, so if you set numStrings to 65535, it will read in all 131070 bytes, now say you build a map such that strings indexes 1-32767 are never used, then you could put your used offsets at 32768+ and have them point to strings in what would otherwise be the header information for strings 1-32767, ultimately saving you 2*numStrings bytes of data
