These instructions apply to all types thermometers that include classic and digital mercury thermometers.
The thermometer must be placed 5 feet above ground 1ft. If the thermometer is placed too low, it will heat up the ground, while a thermometer placed too high can cause it to cool down too much due to natural cooling. 5 ft. is the ideal temperature.
The thermometer must be placed in shade. The direct sunlight that comes from the sun can cause your thermometer to attain a higher temperature than what it needs to.
Your thermometer should have good airflow. This keeps air circulating around the thermometer, ensuring a balance with the surrounding surroundings. It is therefore important to ensure that there aren't any obstructions that block the thermometer like trees or structures. The more you can the thermometer, the more free.
Place the thermometer over an area of grass or dirt. Concrete and pavement attract much more heat than grass. That is the reason why cities are generally warmer than suburbs. It is recommended to keep the thermometer at least 100 feet. from any paved or concrete surfaces to prevent a falsely high temperature reading.
Protect the thermometer. You do not want your thermometer to become permanently damaged by precipitation. A Stevenson screen is an ideal location to store thermometers as well as other instruments because they provide protection as well as sufficient air circulation. Most electronic devices are able to operate up to 30-40degC and server brochures and data sheet specifications could state that devices are able to operate in this temperature range with no degrading but the truth is that heat kills electronics.
Cooling fans operating at the highest end of their operating temperature need to be run more quickly to move the air volume above the CPU and other electronics. They are mechanical components with bearings that wear out and require to be replaced. The lifespan of electronic components can decline at higher temperatures.
