Almost seems kinda GTA-like[2023-12-30. : 12:02 am] Ultraviolet -- I thought about making a post there but wasn't sure how indepth it'd go[2023-12-30. : 12:01 am] Ultraviolet -- UndeadStarUndeadStar shouted: Maybe a move to the forum "Technology & Computers" or something should be considered at this point? I dunno I've gotten most of the info I need at this point [2023-12-29. : 11:50 pm] UndeadStar -- Maybe a move to the forum "Technology & Computers" or something should be considered at this point?[2023-12-29. : 8:41 am] NudeRaider -- UltravioletUltraviolet shouted: NudeRaider god dammit, I'm becoming a boomer NOOOOOOoooo...[2023-12-29. : 8:36 am] NudeRaider -- UltravioletUltraviolet shouted: NudeRaider Eh... I'm not going to do it tonight anyway and the mounting screw should arrive tomorrow. I want to install the new drive either way fair enough[2023-12-29. : 7:46 am] Ultraviolet -- NudeRaiderNudeRaider shouted: Ultraviolet SATA? THen it's easy just plug it in and leave it hanging/lying somewhere loosely. Good enough for testing. Won't damage the SSD. Eh... I'm not going to do it tonight anyway and the mounting screw should arrive tomorrow. I want to install the new drive either way[2023-12-29. : 7:46 am] Ultraviolet -- NudeRaiderNudeRaider shouted: Ultraviolet I was assuming nerd/gamer bubble. Not run of the mill I'm-writing-an-email-once-a-month boomer bubble. god dammit, I'm becoming a boomer[2023-12-29. : 7:45 am] NudeRaider -- for us it's always peak performance that counts, not the 90% of the time we have it at idle. [2023-12-29. : 7:43 am] NudeRaider -- UltravioletUltraviolet shouted: NudeRaider derp lol. I was thinking people actually would value that since the majority of people aren't doing crazy intense tasks with their comps I was assuming nerd/gamer bubble. Not run of the mill I'm-writing-an-email-once-a-month boomer bubble. [2023-12-29. : 7:41 am] NudeRaider -- UltravioletUltraviolet shouted: NudeRaider Well... no. I do have an old style SSD that I had Windows 7 on, but I didn't really feel like going through mounting it in the comp when I'm never going to use it long term anyway. Figured I may as well wait for the screw to show up so I can install my new one and just go from there. SATA? THen it's easy just plug it in and leave it hanging/lying somewhere loosely. Good enough for testing. Won't damage the SSD.[2023-12-29. : 7:37 am] Ultraviolet -- Already spent more time than I'd care to admit putting the damn thing together. I'm rusty [2023-12-29. : 7:37 am] Ultraviolet -- NudeRaiderNudeRaider shouted: Ultraviolet you're telling me between your old and new pc you have only one HDD/SSD? I have three + an external in my current PC. But if that's the case you could install Windows on a USB drive. Well... no. I do have an old style SSD that I had Windows 7 on, but I didn't really feel like going through mounting it in the comp when I'm never going to use it long term anyway. Figured I may as well wait for the screw to show up so I can install my new one and just go from there.[2023-12-29. : 7:36 am] Ultraviolet -- NudeRaiderNudeRaider shouted: NudeRaider * won't lol. derp lol. I was thinking people actually would value that since the majority of people aren't doing crazy intense tasks with their comps[2023-12-29. : 7:35 am] NudeRaider -- NudeRaiderNudeRaider shouted: don't get me wrong, I'm not disagreeing with Ex. That was just a bit of sarcasm because probably most people will value idle consumption as the most important aspect. * won't lol.[2023-12-29. : 7:35 am] NudeRaider -- UltravioletUltraviolet shouted: NudeRaider I can't really run my OS without my HDD. But when I'm just in the BIOS, the noise isn't present. I guess that's exactly why I suspected it might be the HDD. I have a backup on hand, but I lost the damn screw to hold it down on the mobo, so I have to wait a day or two for replacement ones to arrive -.- you're telling me between your old and new pc you have only one HDD/SSD? I have three + an external in my current PC. But if that's the case you could install Windows on a USB drive.[2023-12-29. : 7:34 am] Ultraviolet -- I'm probably part of the majority lol. I don't use my computer for much intensive stuff anymore. I just want it to do my basic tasks quietly and efficiently[2023-12-29. : 7:31 am] NudeRaider -- don't get me wrong, I'm not disagreeing with Ex. That was just a bit of sarcasm because probably most people will value idle consumption as the most important aspect.[2023-12-29. : 7:27 am] NudeRaider -- UltravioletUltraviolet shouted: NudeRaider Yeah I'm not used to AMD CPUs, I've always had Intel. Ex suggested I go AMD this time though, said Intel hasn't been competitive for years *shrugs* depends on the type of competition, I guess. I'm assuming Ex wasn't considering low power consumption at idle as a priority.[2023-12-29. : 7:23 am] Ultraviolet -- NudeRaiderNudeRaider shouted: da real donwano he could just disconnect it to test the theory. Yeah I'm not used to AMD CPUs, I've always had Intel. Ex suggested I go AMD this time though, said Intel hasn't been competitive for years *shrugs*[2023-12-29. : 7:22 am] NudeRaider -- UltravioletUltraviolet shouted: da real donwano That was my guess at first, too. But I didn't know why. And these guys said it was most likely something else. What makes you think it is? don't listen to our "sacred advice". We don't know. Just try everything.[2023-12-29. : 7:22 am] Ultraviolet -- NudeRaiderNudeRaider shouted: da real donwano plot twist: he forgot to connect the fans. Actually have you checked they are both blowing in the correct direction (to the back of the case)? If they are pushing against each other there might not be much air moved. Yeah I had to look it up on YT to make sure I did it right lol[2023-12-29. : 7:21 am] Ultraviolet -- da real donwanoda real donwano shouted: My guess is it's the HDD. But if your cpu is running hot then you can adjust the fan curves to work harder. But this may cause more noise from your computer as a whole. That was my guess at first, too. But I didn't know why. It seems like it's running too hot, it's at 44C at idle. Minimum I've seen is 42C even after reseating with a bit less thermal paste. I haven't had one in ages, so I can't comment on normal temps but I do know AMDs are particularly bad at idle power consumption compared to Intel (albeit more efficient than Intel at load).[2023-12-29. : 6:53 am] NudeRaider -- UltravioletUltraviolet shouted: It got up to 78C at some point yesterday and I wasn't even playing games or doing anything particularly intensive. Just browsing with a million windows open lol that doesn't say much without the corresponding actual cpu load. Websites are easily capable of generating a lot of load.[2023-12-29. : 6:52 am] NudeRaider -- da real donwanoda real donwano shouted: Ultraviolet Have you tried monkeying with fan curves in the bios? plot twist: he forgot to connect the fans. Not at all, not sure what would be better. The noise seems to be independent of the fans coming on[2023-12-29. : 2:12 am] Ultraviolet -- da real donwanoda real donwano shouted: Also what CPU/cooler? Cooler and CPU[2023-12-29. : 2:08 am] da real donwano -- UltravioletUltraviolet shouted: Ideally I'd like to run the CPU at a lower power anyway since it's so damn hot Have you tried monkeying with fan curves in the bios?[2023-12-28. : 5:49 pm] Ultraviolet -- It got up to 78C at some point yesterday and I wasn't even playing games or doing anything particularly intensive. Have you tried fiddling around with power settings? maybe high or low performance plans influence it. Or try changing (up or down) power and frequency limits of the cpu. I haven't, but I certainly could try[2023-12-28. : 4:06 pm] NudeRaider -- UltravioletUltraviolet shouted: The noise is very intermittent, I can get it to stop by temporarily putting the comp to sleep and then immediately waking it up, but it's not an ideal solution because it does eventually come back curious. Or try changing (up or down) power and frequency limits of the cpu.[2023-12-28. : 4:04 pm] NudeRaider -- UltravioletUltraviolet shouted: NudeRaider Could it be the CPU? It seems to be coming from that vicinity. I used the dB app on my phone and I can't say the results were conclusive but it did seem a bit louder there. I already had my GPU in my previous rig and it never made that noise before. Or would it just be the motherboard in that case? the cpu die itself? Haven't heard of it being possible, but who knows with these new chiplet designs. I would suspect the voltage converters on the mainboard around the cpu.[2023-12-28. : 3:59 pm] NudeRaider -- UltravioletUltraviolet shouted: Impossible UV3 early test version is out: http://www.staredit.net/topic/18675/ It's fully functional, just not calling it 1.00 yet since I may still make some big changes to it. Frustrating issue to have, it's like having a really loud god damn mosquito in my office -.-[2023-12-28. : 4:21 am] Ultraviolet -- The noise is very intermittent, I can get it to stop by temporarily putting the comp to sleep and then immediately waking it up, but it's not an ideal solution because it does eventually come back[2023-12-28. : 4:19 am] Ultraviolet -- I tried reseating the CPU since I worried I applied too much thermal paste the first time around.. It's most often the GPU, PSU or Motherboard. HDD I would rule out. Could it be the CPU? It seems to be coming from that vicinity.
