Note: As of August 30, 2012, this is an old rule topic and is no longer applicable for this forum.

All new threads are required to have screenshots of your current work demonstrating progress on the map beyond the idea stage. (ie, that the map is actually in production.) Screenshots can be of gameplay or a shot from inside the editor. If there are no screenshots, your topic will be closed or deleted. "Bad" screenshots that do not actually show us much about the map do not count and are not acceptable.

what if you can't get screenies until you are on a certain computer? Or you can't get screenies at all for.. a month until you switch to your dad's house to get screenies? My point is, it is unfair for people who can't get screenshots right away, or if at all. It restraints their rights basically of posting their map on SEN.

Under what circumstances would that happen?

So explain how you can have the map, be working on, and NOT have a working copy of SC?

He means that at his dad's house is where he can take screenshots. Wherever the other place(s) he goes, they are not obtainable for whatever the cuirumstances.

You can take screenshots where ever you are.

Allow me to explain. If you bring SCXTra and SCMDraft 2 to your dads house, what stops you from taking Irfanview on the same flashdrive/cd/3.5 floppy set (Highly unlikely, but hey)? Maybe you forgot to. Maybe you didnt know its a powerful tool that can take screen shots. Maybe yer stupid LuLz

Theres no reason not to have em, especially if you have the internet.

Any map without screenshots most often is not even close to half baked, it's just a plan to make a map, or more minerals.

There's a little forum called Map Showcase for posting your maps. :)

Isn't Map Showcase for finished maps though?

OVERWATCH STATUS GO

Yes. Here's how I see the categories:
UMS Mapmaking Assistance is for specific issues with a trigger or set of triggers in a map.
Map Production is for threads pertaining to the production of a map (like an announcement and explanation).
Map Showcase is for playable/releasable maps once the creator feels as if it is in a good enough state for at least an open beta.

Most of the time people will put updated maps in the Production thread, and that's fine, but for the most part those would belong in Showcase.

Veering off the topic of screenshots at some houses, no screenshots at others, is there a limit to how big a screenshot can be?

The concept is posting maps that are under construction.

So, what's the purpose of taking pictures of a building that's 10% complete? screen shots can make a game look lamer than it really is, and get people to lose interest.

Is this new screen shot thing supposed to lower the thread count? Seriously.

Sep 13 2008, 5:55 am Madroc Post #13

Essentially. I think it's just there to stop threads that aren't actually serious from being posted. I agree that it doesn't make ALL that much sense to do it this way, but hey, it works. Otherwise the forum would be flooded by all these ideas that will never really come to being and then the good ideas that are actually serious will be lost at sea.

The point is to demonstrate the actual progress you have on your map not how well you can bullshit. If screenshots aren't required then anyone can go around making topics about maps that don't exist and make them sound like they're epic projects.

If screenshots make a map look lame then that's great because the map probably isn't ready to be posted in the first place. People should get excited and interested on actual substance, not just purely on ideas that aren't implemented yet.

We don't want people to get all hyped up and excited for crap that doesn't exist or is in the pre-alpha idea phase and will likely never be completed.

Krayzee said it nicely before.

Also, Blizzard's recent April Fool's joke provides a PERFECT example of why screenshots make all the difference.

Hmm, it wouldn't be a bad idea to maybe have a subforum for maps that are still in the planning and idea phase where screenshots aren't required. Then the expectation wouldn't be as high for the map actually being completed. And then once there's good progress being made on the map it could be moved to the main map production forum.

Screenshots are pretty logical. If a map isn't far enough in production to provide a decent screenshot, there's really no reason for it to be up in the Production forum.

So… my theory was right. It really didn't do much at all, seeing as how there are as many maps being posted as there were before this rule was made.

Ok, well I don't seem to have the program to open pictures, I just got vista and I'm adapting to it.

If I post a "first look" at my map on youtube and use the link where pictures would go, would I then be able to post a topic about my map with out having it being removed?

None.

They removed Paint from Vista?

haha, no.

But paint used to be able to open the sc screen shots, now it says "error: unable to open".

I've even tried power point. Nothing is working.
