I was tempted to post this at the beginning, but I thought it might be counterproductive.

Seriously, you should have more than 512MB of RAM.

Why should he have more then 512?
I have friends with 128 and 256 mb of ram.
They run windows 2000 on some computers and Damn Small Linux on others just fine.
Really you just need to know the basic tweaks.

I found a great list of tweaks for you echo I was going to post it earlier, but I wasn't quite sure about it until I tried it myself.

And this link-

I might also state if you use any anti virus or want to,use the lightest weight one you can get.
I suggest Clamwin.

Those tweak guides do not create that big of a difference in performance; I read the first one and the vast majority of those will give an almost unnoticeable increase at best.

You don't need more than 512MB of RAM, but Windows XP uses substantially more RAM than older versions of Windows, and if you are going to XP and a media player streaming sound AND a graphics-intensive game, then there's no question that something with such a small amount of RAM won't perform.

Heck, if you want to be able to switch into a media player and in and out of a heavy game, I would question whether 1GB is enough, though it probably is.

Echo has also not said if he has integrated graphics/shared memory, which would also severely cramp 512MB of RAM.

Here are the 2 pci video cards that I think are the best

That is a 64 bit memory interface

128 bit memory interface!

But you never said you were getting new hardware (even though you should)

screw RAM, front side bus cache is where it's at.

Just stop being ghetto and buy a real computer. Most new computers don't come with less than 1gb neways.

You may also want a RAM-freeing program such as MaxMem. There are probably better ones out there today, but it's been a long time since I've even tried one.

Also, assuming you're running Windows, invest in disabling unecessary services using a guide such as BlackViper's. The services will suck up quite a bit of RAM for things you don't even need or use.
Just a small question (that doesn't really deserve a thread). I don't have SP3 installed yet, can I still use that XP guide?

None.

ᴄʜᴇᴇsᴇ ɪᴛ!

Of course. SP3 didn't add that much, so if you don't have it, don't worry about it.

I heard that it didn't add anything new if you already kept up with your sp2 updates.

Stop being a retard and assume everyone has money.

I found the problem myself. It is a conflict between my C & E drive. My C drive is a newly installed Windows XP Professional and my E is is a previously Windows XP Home Edition which I just overlapped. My Windows XP is also not properly installed. I'm going to end up reinstalling with a 100 GB Space and move my old files. Is it possible that viruses can jump drives if I move all my SC Maps to the new one?

You could have mentioned at the beginning you had two hard drives, each with a separate installation of Windows XP..

He must not have realized they were on different versions.

Why does having conflicting OSs matter if you only load off of one?

Yeah, my point was just that his description of his problem was rather like complaining pressing the power button does nothing yet failing to mention your cat was in your case snuggling with your motherboard.

I'm glad you discovered the cause of your problem, Echo.

I don't consider myself an expert by any means, but more often than not I'm the most tech-savvy person in a room. I've helped quite a few friends, family, and random stangers with what turn out to be only simple problems. It's amazing the kind of performance improvement you can get just by clearing out all the crap many computers come pre-installed with.

This is kind of old, but still funny, and a good lesson about assumptions.

Funny Tech Support Questions

So you think you're computer-illiterate? Check out the following excerpts from a Wall Street Journal article by Jim Carlton --

1. Compaq is considering changing the command "Press Any Key" to "Press Return Key" because of the flood of calls asking where the "Any" key is.

2. AST technical support had a caller complaining that her mouse was hard to control with the dust cover on. The cover turned out to be the plastic bag the mouse was packaged in.

3. Another Compaq technician received a call from a man complaining that the system wouldn't read word processing files from his old diskettes. After trouble- shooting for magnets and heat failed to diagnose the problem, it was found that the customer labeled the diskettes then rolled them into the typewriter to type the labels.

4. Another AST customer was asked to send a copy of her defective diskettes. A few days later a letter arrived from the customer along with Xeroxed copies of the floppies.

5. A Dell technician advised his customer to put his troubled floppy back in the drive and close the door. The customer asked the tech to hold on, and was heard putting the phone down, getting up and crossing the room to close the door to his room.

6. Another Dell customer called to say he couldn't get his computer to fax anything. After 40 minutes of trouble-shooting, the technician discovered the man was trying to fax a piece of paper by holding it in front of the monitor screen and hitting the "send" key.

7. Yet another Dell customer called to complain that his keyboard no longer worked. He had cleaned it by filling up his tub with soap and water and soaking the keyboard for a day, then removing all the keys and washing them individually.

8. A Dell technician received a call from a customer who was enraged because his computer had told him he was "bad and an invalid". The tech explained that the computer's "bad command" and "invalid" responses shouldn't be taken personally.

9. An exasperated caller to Dell Computer Tech Support couldn't get her new Dell Computer to turn on. After ensuring the computer was plugged in, the technician asked her what happened when she pushed the power button. Her response, "I pushed and pushed on this foot pedal and nothing happens." The "foot pedal" turned out to be the computer's mouse.

10. Another customer called Compaq tech support to say her brand-new computer wouldn't work. She said she unpacked the unit, plugged it in, and sat there for 20 minutes waiting for something to happen. When asked what happened when she pressed the power switch, she asked "What power switch?"

11. True story from a Novell NetWire SysOp:

Caller: "Hello, is this Tech Support?"
Tech: "Yes, it is. How may I help you?"
Caller: "The cup holder on my PC is broken and I am within my warranty period. How do I go about getting that fixed?"
Tech: "I'm sorry, but did you say a cup holder?"
Caller: "Yes, it's attached to the front of my computer."
Tech: "Please excuse me if I seem a bit stumped, It's because I am. Did you receive this as part of a promotional, at a trade show? How did you get this cup holder? Does it have any trademark on it?"
Caller: "It came with my computer, I don't know anything about a promotional. It just has '24X' on it."

At this point the Tech Rep had to mute the caller, because he couldn't stand it. The caller had been using the load drawer of the CD-ROM drive as a cup holder, and snapped it off.
