Well, I was just curious as to what level of grids you go to, Like first you have a grid, then you have a grid based OFF of that

Well, I wanna say, I used a Pentagrid twice. (Thats a grid based off of a grid's Location based off of a grid's location based off of a grid's location based off of a grid's location) Anyways, i want to know how often people use penta, quadra, tera, or double grids... So i set up this here poll. Pretty fancy huh? :D

Is there a point to this?

In assistance?

I do stuff and thingies... Try widening and reducing the number of small nooks and crannies to correct the problem.

what do you mean with the whole multiple grids?

btw. with a single 1x1 grid you can do nearly everything, it just needs many many triggers, if the area where it can be active in 1 trigger cycle is huge...

Yes there is a point to this, which will be revealed after i feel satisfied with the answers.. I dont want any biased answers, so i choose not to reveal the point to all of this at this moment. (but i promise you, this will help me so friggin much on this map im working on... SPOILER, ITS AN LF2 MAP!!!! Yes, i am going to RECREATE Little Fighters 2, the free game with awesome effects.!!! ITS GOING TO BE WITH GREAT ACCURACY TOO!!!!)

The Multiple grids is basically like..... well...

You have a grid somewhere, and something happens, and it chooses directly left of the Unit the grid is based on. Now, basically you have another grid based off of that one location (Left of the unit). It chooses ... oh i dont know... Up. This happens a series of times to increase variables and separate paths....

Like lets say we have an explosion (well series of explosions that are happening consecutively one after the other.) And this is circling the outer edge of the screen. Basically, if you want to control where the screen is, you Center continuously on a unit, be it an observer or something. Then, you want Wraith explosions all around the outer edge.... You can easy set up a series of grids with just a few triggers to make that happen, Clockwise would be easier than counterclockwise... So if the observer moves, the explosions around the edge would stay with the screen.

But please, vote, I really need to see these results, it would help me to no end.

Can we see this "pentagrid" map? I'm guess it was made specifically to have a pentagrid but maybe you can prove me wrong.

Actually, One of them was to see if i could do it, and the other is already on here. Its when that time i made the Selective Field of Veiw Map thing. Its deleted on my computer, but its still on the site if you care to dig it up.
Basicaly it was to have a Marine Look only in one Direction, LIke instead of a circle, have it be more of a cone Field of view, in the direction that the rine is facing... I'll Whip another one up to show you what i mean... gimme a few minutes.
However, its not gonna be an elaborate one, mainly because im tired now, but i was gonna extend it to a side of the screen, if the marine "found" a flashlight.

You're not asking for assistance. Moved to UMS Theory and Ideas.

Although there is not much point in making a poll about this. You use the grid as much times as you need to to archieve the right effect.

I just want to know a few answers to help me on this one map, and this will help me because i want to know if there is a big or small chance id be able to find help on B.Net for the map. I've been searching on B.net for a while , hosting games, going to Map making clans, and i couldnt find anyone who knows how to make a pentagrid. So, i wanted to see if my efforts were just futile, or if i need to keep looking. To rid myself of Biased answers, i chose to keep this reasoning to myself. :-_-:

Because this is a huge project, and ive never taken on something of this magnitude before. I didnt want to directly ask for help, mainly 1) no one would. 2) Youre not really supposed to ask for help on maps on this site.(Unless theyre questions about how to do stuff, but i just need another pair of hands who knows how to do it to speed along the progress of the map so i can finish it before i go.

There's no point in making a pentagrid to understand how it works. Once you have the first grid working all you have to do is repeat its behaviour. Anyone who understands how mobile grids work can easily make a n-grid.

Also, you posted this as if you were just gonna talk about the concept. How are you not really supposed to ask for help on maps? There's a map in production thread where you can ask people for help on your map.

?????

Jul 3 2008, 4:23 pm Pyro682 Post #10

Not necessarily.. Hardly anyone on B.net can make a pentagrid, even after i explain it thoroughly to them. I need them to understand for many of the effects that will be created on the map. And no, i just wanted a poll to see who knew what, take the averages, and see if i could get help... I didnt know that you could do that, because i remember a kid asking for some assistance on maps, and his thread got shut down and deleted after a thorough flaming.

You can actually ask for help, and you can ask questions of how to do stuff without making a poll (and really people are very willing to give assistance around here). Really I don't see a point to this.

I support clokr_'s opinion.

Relax man. Pentagrid means nothing to me (and apparently no one but you). If what you are talking about it making grids off of units in the grid to extend the grid, then you are describing a quite normal thing in mobile grids.

On second read, I am assuming you are talking about what I described but five times over. Thats nice. Do what you need to to get done what you need to.

then my biggest grid was sth around 100x70...
would that be an ubergrid?
I just had a start location, a grid location, 2 coordinates and many steps to the right (~100) and down (~70).
I alread made a grid which used a moving unit to reach the final destination because there could have been many air units in that area...

In Random Quest RPG I actually had a spell that ended up using 7 grids coming off of eachother :P I went ahead and put a triple grid though, since that's the most advanced/common one I use.

Hai Pyro682! :D

I don't normally use multiple grid systems on top of each other, but I think the most syophisticated grid system I used was in my Random Path Defense map.

It uses 13 locations, like this:
12

07 06 05

13 08 01 04 11

09 02 03

10

It used a mobile grid to place overlords in the center 9 inner most square locations and then it centered the overlord over top of a pre-placed unit to make the box (01-09) all square. Then it removed them. Then from each of the outer middle boxes (02,04,06,08) it would create another 3x3 grid of overlords with would then center the 10,11,12,13 locations and then it all would be removed.

After all of this gets done, I would have another 2x2 location to center in the center of 01 location. It was a pretty complex system. :D I don't know which of the poll selections it would fall under. :P

I've had to use a quadragrid a couple times, especially for my minigame party map. It's the only way I can get things to work without having to use more burrowed units or locations.

'Cuz grids are awesome! :P It's also cool to hear reasons why people had to use some extreme grids.
