First off, why would I want to download addons? Why should I need to spend hours of my time going to sites, downloading shady executables, just in order to use a basic browser? Addons do not count in a browser's features.

Shady executables? Everything on the firefox addons website has been tested, and Firefox starts out as good as Opera, the addons make it even better.

Custom panels and links on those panels is the biggest feature I use. I like to get rid of buttons that don't do anything, like home, and why do you need a stop button AND a refresh button at the same time..? I also like to link to all the sites I use commonly there, simply by dragging and dropping from the URL bar.

Firefox allows you to edit how your bars look...

Quick search is also a big one. Right click any form, and click create search. Now, just by typing one word (or letter), you can run a search on any site, anywhere. I've got one set up for countless sites that I often use.

Is it really that difficult to type site:x at the end of a google search?

Quote
I don't know why, but in Firefox, tabs always open in the background, and there's no way to create a new tab without first going into the menus.

Ever tried Ctrl-T?

The only reason people like certain browsers more than others is because of what they are used to. If I already have gotten used to Fx, and I have a bunch of add-ons for it, why should I switch to Opera, when it's really not THAT much better, and visa versa. Until one gets amazingly better than the other, it's all down to preference.

Addons are one of the browsers biggest features. The fact that you can quickly and easily find an addon to do anything and they are all hosted on one site (Firefox's addon's page - same place you find themes/skins also) means the browser has almost limitless number of features. I wouldn't call them shady, if an addon isn't good or is in fact bad for you its going to reflect that before you download it in the comments and/or the rating score. And since they're addons they're 100% optional, you don't need to get them if you don't want them.

I said list things not in Firefox. Firefox has always been super customizable (maybe even more so than Opera) and you can drag and drop URLs from anywhere to anywhere.

There is are addons that do this, most don't require you to type and can search for selected text.

Tools -> Options -> Tabs -> When I open a link in a new tab, switch to it immediately

Control T creates a new tab, and afaik has always been the hotkey to create a new tab. There is also usually a button labled "create tab" on the tab bar or navigation bar, I hide it because I use a hotkey to do this.

Personally I keep it off, I like to click links open in tabs and read them later. If I want to read it after opening I can quickly hit control tab or shift click on it.

Speed Dial (gives you several links within a new tab) and Opera Link (allows you to use the same favourites and settings across multiple machines) are useful, ingenious features.
Firefox has an addon which does this.

Really, now. So if someone is trying to determine whether or not they should purchase a copy of StarCraft, we shouldn't consider custom maps and mods? That makes a lot of sense.

Opera did it with an internal build. I don't think they released it.
They did. http://labs.opera.com/news/2008/03/28/

It only gets to 99 and isn't completely smooth.

One feature I found pretty useful not at all present in Fx or in addons is the fact that Opera indexes every word in the pages you visit. I can type in a word in the address bar and it'll show me every page I've visited recently that has that phrase. It's actually useful when you're looking for something.

About the search feature Deathawk was talking about: Opera doesn't need extra search bars. It just uses the address bar. It's more customizable than Firefox. For example:
g hi = google hi
gi hi = google images hi
y hi = youtube hi
w hi = wikipedia hi
dict hi = dictionary.com hi

And I can set any search engine with any keyword I want.

Actually, it gets 100 pass. Opera passed, Safari got 99/100. Apple devs found a bug in the test, and then Safari passed and Opera got the 99/100. Opera fixed it the next day, but Apple got first in the record books.

That sounds awesome, actually, but how do you do this? I typed starcraft in the address bar and it took me to http://www.starcraftmarine.com/index.php a site I've never visted.

What I still don't understand is why basic features like editing source, and disabling audio and javascript require plugins. Isn't it just easier to include those things in the browser?

Quote from chuiu

I can't seem to edit buttons without going into menus. I can't seem to drag URLs, they simply return to where they were previously. And the customization menus have almost nothing to choose from.

That has nothing to do with what I'm talking about. What I'm saying is that I can type, in the URL bar "sen FireFox", and it will bring up a search on SEN for Firefox.

I don't see what you see. In tools, I see "Web Search", "Downloads", "Add-ons", "Error Console", "Page Info", and "Clear Private Data..."

Quote from chuiu

Again, I'm not seeing the same thing as you. I don't even see a tab bar unless I explicitly create a tab from the menu.

Laser, it's useless to argue with you if you are somehow blind to any of the features we attempt to point out, you are truly missing out on Fx if you can't see the options..

Laser, you seem to be using some old archaic version of Firefox, perhaps 0.1? It would be a good idea to upgrade to the latest version available (v3, release 2 available on the front page as Firefox 3 sneak peak) so you aren't making up arguments against it that apply to some old version nobody uses. You can argue all you want why disabling audio or editing source code are things that should be in a web browser but what you fail to understand is these aren't things commonly used by the average joe and thats why they are excluded from the browser but available via addons. Java ... you must have gone out of your way to download a java free version of Firefox, I can't help you with that every version seems to have it nowadays.

If I understand you correctly about the search function what you are trying to do with 'sen firefox' is search the website Staredit.net for the word Firefox. If this is true then yes, that addon will let you do that and you will also be able to make a distinction between doing a google search on the site for Firefox or using the sites search feature to do the search for Firefox.

The fact you can't see 'options' under the Tools dropdown tells me you're using an archaic version of Firefox. Update then tell me you don't see these things.

sen firefox would use SEN's search engine to look for firefox, just for clarification.

All you gotta do is add a fast search bookmark to its bookmarks folders and then type the keyword and the search string. I got these fast searchs added ATM:
google %s (google)
rae %s (spanish dictionary)
wiki %s (spanish wikipedia)
ewiki %s (wikipedia)
urban %s (urban dictionary)
msdn %s (microsoft developer network)
dict %s (dictionary.com search)
youtube %s (youtube)

Oh hey I never noticed that. Yeah it works and you get the same amount of freedom as Opera with it. I just setup mine to work like this:

g whatever (google)
d whatever (dictionary)
y whatever (youtube)
w whatever (wiki)
s whatever (sen)
