May 12 2008, 8:50 pm AntiSleep Post #1

This post has been a long time coming, the pervasive immaturity of the active user base, triviality of the topics of conversation, and the dearth of novel content has finally convinced me to let go.

This community and that component of Maplantis that came here are but a shadow of the past, coasting on the innovation and creativity of a dynamic long dead.

It is time for me to go, and I suspect those exceptions to the above rules will soon leave as well. I have no reservations about leaving them here because they know how to contact me, and someone invariably does anytime something interesting happens.

Goodbye.

Dear Mr. Superiorist,
You have to realize in life that things don't go your way. Maplantis was nothing but an illusion of a community that supported elitism. There is no other community that is as sub-focused on map making as StarEdit.Net. Afterall, all forums are "If you don't like it, leave." I don't know why there is a reason for you to post this. The immaturity you describe is only a portion of this community, most likely the null, which is basically a spam subforum with rules. Yes, I agree on there are some things that aren't right in this forum and there are also things I don't like about it to, but I just look over it and choose to ignore it. If you're leaving, best of luck to your future.

We live in a society.

I suppose it's best not to lock this as I had previously. Something a long time coming should be discussed instead of left to fester, and illustrative of the very thing AntiSleep seeks to combat. (Though if this topic explodes, it will be locked and heads will roll.) I have some work to do... I will write on this subject later.

You just realized this? This has been happening since v4. Oh well, I don't want to get caught in a war so if you want to leave. Leave.

It was nice knowing you though...

Maplantis was extremely productive when it was around. The mod-making community has gone to hell since its demise.

And who cares?? I'm not sure a public announcement was necessary, but i do feel bad that you had to let such a small thing get to you... It's great to have a little fun sometimes(null forum) and work other times(maybe not up to expectations but there's always a way to improve). Productivity, though it may seem at a low, is still productivity.

You're just as immature if you let things like this get into you.

And there was no need for you to create an emo goodbye topic like this. What did you expect from making a post like that? Do you expect people to regret and change right away? Were you simply trying to point out something that's been quite obvious for a long time? Or did you just simply want people to feel sad for your departure? Whatever the reason was, it doesn't matter anymore as I'm sure you're probably never going to read this again. Best of luck whatever you're doing

Untill something good actually comes from SEN, I'm convinced that the elitism at Maplantis was a good thing. Maplantis' modding community was BY FAR the best that ever existed. The mapping community also prospered. I don't think leaving is the best idea -- I think Antisleep shoud be trying to help out this... framework of a website.

The one thing I don't understand is the big difference. What can SEN provide that Maplantis did and SEN isn't to help modding?

Elitism is a good thing in communities like this. It makes new members strive to improve themselves. Those who mock elitism in an equal opportunity society are merely lazy. After all, is a man not entitled to the sweat of his own brow? No! Says the man in SeN, it belongs to the newbies! No! Says the man in WarBoards, it belongs to the fools! No! Says the man in battle.net, it belongs to the thieves! I chose something different... I chose... Maplantis.

More specifically.. What, did Yoshi go around saying he'd kill you if you didn't make mods?

I've been looking for that argument for years.. ever since I started opposing the abolition of everything hierarchy-based at SEN.

It gave the modders a mature haven to be at and make mods. The way I see it, the community of SEN really drove a lot of modders away, as is happening with antisleep (and was the cause of this topic).

I've actually stopped making two of my mods since Maplantis died... And I doubt I'll ever finish them. There's really no reason to make them since no one here cares enough. And I don't really feel like I can make a difference here.

At Maplantis, I felt like if I made something good, people would remember it and play it. But... Maplantis is gone...

I certainly don't mind elitism, which is, I think, a beautiful thing often seen in the negative light, both in the real world (OMG, OBAMA WENT 2 HARDVARD, AND ONLY NOW WE GESS DAT HE CUD BE ELITIST) and on SEN. Yes, I think DTBK or Sie-phun are more elite then Joe6969.

So, would allowing only [MM] members to post in [MM] forums and allowing topics to be made in the modding forums to be marked as 'MATURE ONLY', the mature having to have passed a modding test? Would something like that recreate the environment you guys need to prosper?

I don't see how the Modding Forums on SEN are any worse then those on Maplantis otherwise.

Err.. a policy to play new well-made mods on Mod Night, maybe? Everyone's yelling Mod Night on Mod Night in the shoutbox more then I shout Map Night, so I assume Mod Night is pretty active..

Not just the modding forums; the forums as a whole. Maplantis' other forums were mature, and for the most part, run by modders for modders giving us a very nice place to be. SEN doesn't do that to the same extent. As well, Maplantis was very mod-centered, and a large portion of the community there recognized the significance of the modding community. I could write more, and will in time, but I really should be doing homework right now :P
