You know what Hercanic, that was the most thought provoking post I read in awhile. I suppose I could switch the doctype to transitional.

This forum is coded in php5.

Anyway, PHP is a bit more advanced than HTML... :)

You're right, it's always better to try to force a website to do what you want rather than click in a slightly different way to do it yourself. My apologies.

On a similar point, I agree with IP (mostly). What if somebody wants to just follow a link without opening tabs? If all the links on the internet worked like this, my browser would be full of superfluous tabs.
On the other hand, if I'm on a flash gaming website and accidentally hit a link, it is horribly annoying to lose whatever I already did to go to a link I didn't want to.
In most cases though, I would prefer to have the choice.

Edit: Dang it! This was supposed to be right after Hercanic's post.
Anyway IP, I'd prefer the option (as I said), but that's just me.

Dear IsolatedPurity:
I see that new windows are working. Awesome!

Dear Frazz:
Condescending sarcasm does not suit you. Enough with the straw man. "Always" is your addition, "force" bears a nice negative connotation, and "click in a slightly different way" is an over-simplification that doesn't apply to everyone (not everyone has a mousewheel, middle mouse button, or uses Firefox). You claim opening a link as a new window/tab is easy, yet I can turn that very logic around on you and ask: What's so hard about closing a window? Is the X too small? Alt-F4 not good enough? It's not like these are automatic popups, you'll only have as many open as you click on. In most cases, just one before you close it, and you can freely navigate that site without worrying about getting back to SEN through your history.

As for IP, you haven't been following the conversation very well if you agree with him yet don't want link targets. He wanted them before I ever said anything. I assume you mean that you agree with the quote to Wayne written by someone on another forum. I recommend reading the thread it comes from. A lot of good points were made there.

Now, enough with the generalities. You say in most cases you prefer to have the choice. Be specific. We're talking about this forum, not any other site. Do you need the ability to open external links in the same window? If so, when and why? I am legitimately curious, as I've never once encountered a time while on SEN where I wanted a user-posted link to take me away from browsing this forum.

I wasn't trying to insult you, Hercanic (except with that first line maybe a little :ermm: ). Also, I know I missed a piece of conversation, as I tried to point out in my edit.
! ! I would edit my posts a lot more if it didn't take 10 minutes EVERY SINGLE TIME I POST, EDIT OR SEND A PM *cough* *cough* ! !

I don't know, I'd just always prefer the choice. You say I'm too lazy to close a window, but the same argument applies to you (I think I already did apply it actually).
I do see what you're saying with the images though. I probably would always open those in a new tab. Good point.

I appreciate the info you guys have given to me, but not so much the arguing. It seems that every thread, regarless of the subject always turns into a fight.

Anyway if you have a suggestion there is a forum for that. please stay on topic.

Yeah, I know, sorry about hijacking your thread. But hey, at least it keeps it visible! =oP Anywho, how goes your website? Any other questions? By the way, out of curiosity, what is your website about?

I hate when websites force me to open new windows.

The thing is you can actually tell a link to open in a new window/tab by the way you click on it. You however cannot tell it NOT to open a new window/tab upon clicking it, thus adding to annoyance.

On digg I like to open a whole bunch of background tabs with stories I think look interesting then read them all one by one. On reddit (a site that competes with digg) they have the story page on reddit, and it makes a new window for opening the site with the content in question, which I found to be unbarable because I'd have like 30 windows open and 15 of them I don't even want anymore.

I love having to get addons because websites have annoying setups.

Sayoka, sorry if it's annoying you, but that seems to be the way it works. It would be kinda pointless to make a new topic for what is basically a four post discussion.
Or, in short, suck it up. :bleh:

Dear Hercanic:

I don't give a shit what browser you like, just as long as it isn't buggy and is reasonably standards compliant.

IE6 is the only browser that web developers have to go out of their way to make pages compatible for and also are most of the time forced to skip out on the latest design techniques because they don't want to improve their browser. All the mean time the regular joe who knows nothing about web design who is part of the problem because they don't want to change browsers because they're "comfortable" using IE6, are halting internet innovation and slowed down the progression of better, faster, more dynamic websites simply because web developers can't make something that half their audience can't view.

If we always used that "I'm comfortable with old software" we'd all be running netscape navigator 2.0 in windows 3.1 and viewing pages that look like they've been made in MSpaint. We could have so much more but it took firefox to literally kick microsoft in the ass to start working on IE again because when IE dominated the market, theres no incentive to continue to develop it since they have nothing to gain, they're a monopoly. The dominance of IE made internet browsing extremely difficult in alternative operating systems like OSX or Linux, since the browser was windows only.

To me, firefox has done amazing things. It has put a hole the vendor lockin that forces everyone to use windows, now the only reason I have to use windows is for games, but that will slowly be changing as well. Firefox finally forced MS to get up and start making IE standards compliant, and with IE8 they're apparently going to make extremely standards compliant by default. The extentions are pretty much the most useful feature, I have noscript, fireftp, web developer toolbar, adblock, etc, all very useful additions to firefox for me.

As I have said previously, and again, IE should be avoided. Firefox is a good alternative and the same goes for Netscape Navigator. And anyway, you can display content according to the browser by detecting the version (this, however, is not a fix to the IE problems.

Additional tools in Firefox and Netscape are significantly noticed by most. However, IE does support turning scripts off, you just have to know how. For usability, Firefox. For a nit-picky browser, IE.

To open a A HREF Link in IE, you right-click and press 'Open'. (You do have a point, new windows are annoying!)

:-(

You people are so internet browser elitist.
It shows webpages, just like the comic shows.
You shouldn't need to do whacked out things in a webpage, that's what flash and executables are for.

And besides, if you get angry at the audience, because they don't like how you [the entertainer] present the show, then you fail to entertain.

I wonder if I'll get banned for insolence. :ermm:
They can do that. Read the FAQs...
So anyw-- :stfu: [Before I say something stupid]
P.S.
The PSP broswer is the way of the future, it's what I use for everything. Best browser EVAR.
