Let me show you how to hump without making love.

I didn't see a topic about this, so I decided to just go ahead and post it.

This is a pretty good guideline that I copied directly from the Wiki of the late Maplantis, but is more so the Philosophy about which Maplantis was created around:

Quote from Maplantis Wiki
Philosophy
Maplantis was built upon an idea called open (source) mapping. Much like free software, open mapping is about three freedoms:

1) The freedom to study how the map works, and adapt it to your needs (not protected is a prerequisite)
2) The freedom to redistribute copies
3) The freedom to improve the map, and release your improvements to the public, so that the whole community benefits (not protected is a prerequisite)

A map is considered open if it has all of these freedoms.

You should have to ability to study how the map works. Learn from it. Change it to understand what reacts. If you decide to release your changes, you are not required to notify anyone in any way.

You are allowed to redistribute the map, as most players on Battle.net do. There is no restriction as to who can play the map and who can't.

In order for the freedoms to make changes, to publish improved versions, and to be meaningful, you must have full access to map. Therefore, not being protected is a necessary condition for open maps.

Credits are to be maintained. Respect the work of the author as if it were your own. Although his intentions may not be what you have changed, his name must remain.

OSMapping is something that Clan Dyne and the community of Maplantis were built up around. The members of Dynasty and the community of Maplantis are both about helping others to learn and prosper. While we do believe people need to become better mappers through practice and should not have someone holding their hand the whole way, a guiding hand is a wonderful thing to have when you get more serious about learning how to map and makes all the difference as they progress.

I was raised into mapping thinking everyone was like this, but I was wrong. A lot of people leave people hanging in the wind and others tend to bite the hand that feeds them. Meaning, that people are smug and like to ignore the people asking for help; or that people pretty much ask others to map for them. Both of these are something that I feel need to stop and FYI, there are places you can find assistance.

Many of the people from the late Maplantis are here at SEN, who are also pro-OpenSource and will help to answer any questions you have. There is also Dynasty, who's members are required to be OpenSource and will help you whenever you need assistance. Other clans, such as Operation Onslaught and the hibernating Clan (U), have many members that are also pro-OpenSource.

OSMAP exists. Protection doesn't, now. Story is over.

Open mapping seems kinda common sense now. If there WAS a protection solution that could work (and there may be... but none that I'll reveal :3), I'd think differently.

Awwww. I'm glad OSMAP exists, people need to lighten up. IMO, just put ClosedSource in ur map's info and I know that nobody in my clan will mess with it. Or else >:(

Now, when it comes to SC, OS Mapping has some downsides, the main downside, IMO, is that an unprotected map is much larger than one compressed by protection, so I find that in many cases, truly having your maps open-source is not the best option.

But that's when unprotectors come in, they allow people to look at your map, and you can still use as good of compression as you can. I think that is the best method, and to allow people to have the open version, if they request it from you.

Compression and Protection are a bit different ;D

Serious compression protects the map as a side-effect.

1) The freedom to study how the map works, and adapt it to your needs (not protected is a prerequisite)

This is the sole reason why I use unprotection, when trying to figure out what makes a map "tick". I find it interesting to see how other people cleverly create specfic triggers that work for their conditions of the map, and how it relates to their game. Mainly I could see someone using it to figure out "how they did it". My first map that I unprotected to figure out how it worked was "Binary Defense" by: SoftWareWolf . I just couldn't figure out how you could create a supply depot, then remove it, create a bunker, move units their, make them enter, disable it, move the bunker, create a beacon, disable it, then see it with vision off. This was the coolest thing I had ever seen, back in the day. Now its like hello and goodbye. Theres tons of maps that incorperate these technics into their game play.

So Clan Dyne is a democracy(I think that is what they call it now).
Anyways I find Open Source mapping helping helpful to anyone.Even back when I was in Clan Mp on west. Some random mapper would pop in ask a question and I would go uhhh wait a second I got a map with that and I told them to take look at the trigger.
Then when I joined Clan Oo,I still got noobs asking questions(I swear they love me :()So at this time I knew a lot more and I would make a full map explaining it for them. You know how kenoli does?
So yeah OSmapping really helps a lot :).

I do stuff and thingies... Try widening and reducing the number of small nooks and crannies to correct the problem.

Exactly the same thing, I saw in a map called Slot TD.
I did not open that map (was protected anyway) and I started to try to create the "Bunker trick" myself. I knew that you have to do something with the Bunker... First I only disabled it and then I tried to create another building on it... (failed). But after that I moved the Bunker away and what did I experience? The units shot from the Bunker's old position. I made a map around my testmap and used the systems I saw in Slot TD (disabled vision for the player for the colors on the map).
First I had a colorful area on the minimap but I changed it, so that you had a sort of statistics on the minimap.
Voila, I made a map which made myself a little bit famous and I did not open a map which used that systems. I often played Slot TD and learned to create that system myself.
Same with Poker TD and my Poker Temple (but I think I created a much better system than the one tourmenteur created long time before)... I improved the systems I used before for maximum perfection.
I would always advice newer mappers to recreate existing maps. You learn it yourself. You think more about the systems and you develop them to be bugfree.
It's my personal experience.... if you have still no idea, you can still post your question in this forum.
