Defense all the way! It takes alot to make a good defense map, that doesnt just seem like repitition. Buid bunker here, build this there, Upgrader here.

If a mapmaker can incorperate some type of unknow variable, or something that is random and unique in every single game, they will keep on playing ( granted that the game is actualy fun )

Most of defense games have units that spawn and follow a path, and if left alive, they make it to the end of the path, thus killing one/many of your lives. Im not sure how this can change accept for a Random Path Defense <-- Almost finished with it.

Defense! The random defense maps are fun; Either you're lucky, or you're not. Almost every map I make is a defense.

Quote from Falkoner
think about it, maps that are complete jokes to map makers are by-far the most popular, and while the pubbies often enjoy playing the maps we do, they don't host them often for some reason.

B-netters enjoy these feeble games because they're simple-minded. If it's not simple, most people won't even try to figure it out and usually end up leaving within five minutes. Map makers are much more sophisticated and have a better understanding of how most maps work.

Lol, that's exactly why they don't play my defense maps; Bomb Squad and Apeiron. They are so original, and complex that they suck at it and just leave.

Indeed, Tuxlar said so himself.
B.netters like maps like they like sex. Repetative and i forgot the other thing... (intense?)

I dont make maps very often, all i have made is a couple bounds and a defence. I understand what he is saying though. its completely true. Addicting maps is what people come back to. Defences are so attractive because you want to get to the end, but some n00b leakzorz. I am working really hard on an rpg, but if its not pupular and addicting than it wont become a success. im working on adding save load triggers, so that way when the sequel comes out they will be able to play their old char on the sequel...Even though this map not get as many hits as the "BEGINNING OF TIME" old catNmouse and evolves games, i enjoy making it and checking my progress.

I think what makes a game popular is it's replayability. That's why movie maps only last for maybe a week, and then it dies out. I remember when "Kill Me!" came out, I couldn't go into the game channel without seeing a Kill Me movie. I haven't seen it in nearly a year.

I think the game's replayability relies deeply on how players can strategize. Players can try a different strategy every time, and see whether it helps them win or makes them lose. I prefer games where it's very difficult to win, games where I've only won once or twice. Most players enjoy being challenged, I think everybody wants somewhat of a challenge. Make the game too complex, it'll confuse people and most players won't want to play it. Make it simple yet challenging, those seem to be the most popular games, even though they seem like jokes to map makers.
I think this is why defense maps are indeed the most popular games, everyone has to work together in a sense to complete the map, if someone screws up everyone fails. This is one challenge that each player faces. Trying to compile the best strategy in the world to absolutely beat the game every time is another challenge. Players enjoy being challenged, I think.
Maybe not the idiotic players, like little kids or uneducated people. But I think everyone else likes a challenge. ;)

I am not voting in this thread as NONE of my top five choices are listed in it. Where are the Civilizations, WW1, WW2, maybe even diplomacies. It seems like the list was just one person's favorites combined with some the crappy types that are over-played---it's amazing cat and mouse wasn't included so maybe my theory is wrong. So yea, I vote bad poll choices.

This poll is still running?

The poll choices were specifically constrained for a reason. I already know there are omissions. This wasn't meant to be just a dumb popularity contest.

Will someone please close this?

I think someone revived it during that 2 week period where about a hundred dead topics were brought back up.
