There is a new piece of tech that replaces SCDB in Korea called SCA. It is a third party program that runs in parallel to Starcraft, and mappers can use it to create persistent variables outside of the map itself.

For example, you can create a leaderboard that shows like the top killer of the month or year for your shoot-em-up map. You could then award that player by giving him a special skin. For example, let's say your shooter is everyone is Terran Ghosts, well, your map could be engineered to give the top scoring player of the month the Sarah Kerrigan unit instead.

It is also used as a save system. Players could quit a map and then rejoin it and SCA would be able to remember what their items and money and skills were etc (in an RPG, for instance).

RPGs can basically become "MMO" with people able to join each others play sessions, and their character's experience carrying over. This is one thing that I must say is far superior to Starcraft's built-in save feature, which locks players into save files. You could play your RPG solo, your mate can log on, then you jump out, host, and he jumps in, and off you go with no progress lost. That is truly amazing in my opinion.

Already I see on the Atia World RPG forums posts about "bracelet party gathering" which to my mind reminds me of the old World of Warcraft tough bosses that could not be beaten solo, and instead players had to team up against them. You could create these sort of experiences in a Starcraft map with SCA tech.

Maps can also be made to be "SCA only" meaning if you try to boot the map up without it you will fail. You can force other things as well. The map we played, Atia World, would only work on Korean battlenet, and would only work two player.

There are probably more things it can do that I'm not aware of, because I'm still very new to the technology.

Thanks for posting this. Do you have to use EUD Editor 3 for this to work? I know EUD Editor 2 has built in functionality for SCDB, but it's no longer updated. Or will SCDB commands in EUD Editor 2 work with SCA also?

Yea someone in Discord did say to me it would only work in EUD Editor 3.

Veteran Mapper

How does it directly compare to SCDB? Could someone make a pros/cons list?

"It takes far more than a simple ideology to map amazing things. Mapping requires a strong passion for SC as well as an even stronger devotion to your work. Avoid instant gratification. Set directions/goals for the map, and stick to them. Take pride in the work, be patient with it, and never settle for less."

Well, that's kind of a shame. Last I checked EUD Editor 3 was far less user and English friendly than EUD Editor 2.

Two pros I see for SCDB: EUD Editor 2 compatible and no registration required.

With how far this tech has gone, integration with real SQL databases might not be too far away. Such a thing would be sooooo cool. :O

The main con of SCA would be the location of where the save data are stored. They are stored in a database hosted on a server somewhere. This is also a pro, because the users cannot manipulate their sava data if they are not locally stored.

Will this server be up and running, let say 3-4 years down the road from today? If the server goes offline, your map would be essentially disabled. If you are set on creating a map based on SCA, just be aware that your map may become unplayable if SCA servers go woof.

Great guide lifebot. Got SCA working finally.

Desperately needs an English translation if it has any hope of becoming mainstream here, however.

Regardless, I am looking forward to checking out some maps I have been interested for quite some time in that have been locked behind SCA-access, starting with Avlos' zombie map.

Couldn't get AtiaWorld working despite using 32 bit client SCA and latest version of AtiaWorld unfortunately.

Has the generic EUD error on game start. Oh, it might require 2 player minimum, that could be why.
