Hey gang - trying to help a friend put together a gaming PC on a tight $1400 budget, including monitor and keyboard. I went a bit over, see below build for reference. I was wondering what you guys think if I made any glaring errors or if there are any places that could obviously be cut. The board I picked supports max DDR4 2666 so I picked the lowest CAS latency RAM I could find at 2666, it seemed to me like the i5-9600K is the best single-threaded performance chip at its price point (6 cores should be plenty for just about everything too). Wasn't too sure on the monitor, I use an Acer and I like it so mostly I went off that and reviews.

As always, thanks for any suggestions or feedback! Don't be afraid to let me know how dumb my choices were.

ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ

I feel like a 2070 might be overkill for 1080p gaming. Maybe go for a 1660 Ti or 2060 Super instead and use the extra money for a better monitor? That one is TN and pretty gross.

Whys:
The new low end Zen 2 CPUs are more than powerful enough for gaming builds unless you're going much higher end than a 1400$ rigg. You cut corners in too many other areas for me, its like a prebuilt with that mobo in the mix. This build is much more balanced, gaming focused, and will allow for 1440p gaming to happen and anytime the frames go above 60fps, which they will depending on game, you actually get the benefit of a high refresh rate monitor. Also I KNOW that keyboard was a joke. :P

And there's no reason to pay for Win10.

I'm mostly agreeing with Excalibur's changes, particularly the switch to Ryzen 3 and the much better monitor. But in the interest of giving you more options to consider, here's what I pieced together, trying to keep the same CPU/GPU performance as your original build:

PCPartPicker Part List

CPU: AMD Ryzen 3 3300X 3.8 GHz Quad-Core Processor ($119.99 @ B&H)
Motherboard: *Gigabyte X570 GAMING X ATX AM4 Motherboard ($169.99 @ Best Buy)
Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200 CL15 Memory ($84.99 @ Corsair)
Storage: Crucial P1 1 TB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive ($128.99 @ Dell)
Video Card: Gigabyte GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER 8 GB WINDFORCE OC 3X Video Card ($499.99 @ Best Buy)
Case: Aerocool Cylon ATX Mid Tower Case ($44.83 @ Amazon)
Power Supply: SeaSonic S12III 500 W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply ($67.98 @ Newegg)
Monitor: MSI Optix G241 23.8" 1920x1080 144 Hz Monitor ($189.99 @ Best Buy)
Keyboard: G.Skill RIPJAWS KM780R Wired Gaming Keyboard ($74.98 @ Amazon)
Total: $1381.73

CPU: The 3300X has the same single-threaded performance as the 9600K at 60% of the cost, and it's on a friendlier chipset.
HSF: The Ryzen 3 CPUs come with the Wraith Stealth cooler, which is Good Enoughâ„¢.
Mobo: If you're going with a Ryzen CPU and think you might want to upgrade it at any time in the future, you'll want a motherboard with either a B550 or X570 chipset, since they will support Zen 3. As a bonus, they also support PCIe 4.0.
RAM: DDR4-3600 CL15. No particularly strong feelings on the pick, but good specs for the price and a reputable brand and product line.
SSD: QLC memory is pretty cheap, and the P1 has good reviews. Crucial is also a respected SSD brand (I have a Crucial M4 from 2013 that's still going strong). Excalibur's pick is faster, though it may not be a difference you'd notice.
GPU: Like Demon mentioned, the 2070S is going to be overkill, but an overkill GPU can also just be a GPU that lasts you many years and survives things like monitor upgrades. If it fits in your budget, why not? Otherwise, the 5700 XT like Excalibur picked wins my vote.
Case: No strong feelings on a budget case as long as it has decent airflow.
PSU: Cheapo SeaSonic PSU. Modular would be nice, but alas, we're on a budget.
Monitor: If you're fine with 1080p, you're going to want a high refresh rate. This is an IPS panel at 144Hz, which your CPU/GPU will do effortlessly. Excalibur's pick is more appropriate for the hardware, if you can move enough money around to make it work in your budget.
Keyboard: I mean, yeah, you could just get away with a K120, honestly. I use it for work, and it's a perfectly fine keyboard. I picked a random brown switch keyboard for this build because the decision is mostly going to come down to personal preference.

If you need the copy of Windows 10, downgrading the GPU to a 5700 XT should get you there, but there are many avenues (including legal ones) for obtaining an activated version of Windows 10 for free, or at least at a significant discount from retail.

Edit: Apparently AMD has changed their mind and will be bringing support for Zen 3 to their X470 and B450 motherboards, with caveats, so if you're looking to save money here, do your research and proceed with caution.

Hey Roy, where do you get your IPC benchmarks from?

None.

Update:

Bah, friend is afraid of building solo (they're in chicago, I am not or I'd help them). Any good pre-built recommendations in the sub-$1400 price range? Need to leave space for monitor and keyboard in the budget.

None.

An artist's depiction of an Extended Unit Death

You can try to go with a company that will assemble a custom PC for you. Dell and HP have such a service, I believe, as well as OriginPC, iBuyPower, CyberpowerPC, etc. These options are going to be more expensive. Here's my attempt at building one at $1211: http://www.cyberpowerpc.com/saved/1MC0ER

- Ryzen 3600 CPU because they don't offer the 3100 or 3300X
- Downgraded GPU to 5600 XT to fit in budget
- Mechanical keyboard included
- Leaves about $200 in budget for a monitor

It quickly becomes apparent that these services are not going to give you the best bang for your buck when you look at deals that come up on Slickdeals: https://slickdeals.net/computer-deals/

For example, this (now dead?) deal has better specs at basically the same price (though without an included keyboard): https://slickdeals.net/f/14074994-hp-omen-25l-gaming-desktop-amd-ryzen-7-3700x-radeon-rx-5700-1199-99

I'd recommend keeping an eye on Slickdeals. Maybe you'll find a good prebuilt come up for Memorial Day.
