The sword and the faith

SEN,
In the past few years I've done a number of builds. From my original non-coordinated X58 build, to my black and white themed H440, to my current gray and aluminum themed Antec S10 build, all have fell slightly short of the mark of where I want my builds to be in one fashion or another. Sometimes in stability, sometimes in aesthetics, and sometimes in something as simple as cabling. I also have an unhealthy need to satisfy 13-year-old-Ex's wishes. Much the same way a 1st gen NSX speeds past a child one day and unlocks their love of cars, I've looked at things like Dominator Platinums and gone 'one day, I'll have that.' And with this build, I shall. Silly I know, but when its my money I only have to answer to myself. This is going to be a long process and tick off a lot of boxes in my build bucket list. Hence, nearly two months before purchasing begins I have scoured the corners of the net for what will go into this project. Behold the fruit of many hours of pouring over reviews and specs sheets.

A lot of these choices will not make sense at first glance.

'What the fuck is that cooler?'
That cooler was reviewed in a roundup by Antec as competing well with a D15 using 50% slower fans. Its my belief that when given better airflow that it has the potential to beat a D15. I am putting that to the test. And if it doesn't work out, I'll pull the D15 off my current build.

'A 60$ case for a 4k$ build? Wat?'
Believe it or not its extremely difficult to find a case that gives me exactly what I'm looking for. It is thoughtfully laid out and should allow me to keep a very tasteful aesthetic while still using things like LEDs and two tone fans. I don't want a full tower behemoth, I need front panel bays in a time where they are being eliminated on most offerings, and I need the PSU covered/shrouded while still having a large window. I think this case is going to be a really good value buy, and if I'm disappointed with it when it gets here it may be time to pony up 800$ to Caselabs. x.x My other option is finding, buying, and painting the interior of an NZXT Whisper and figuring out how to modernize the cooling and add a window which is a bit more dremel work than I'm comfortable with.

'Why the fuck are you spending hundreds of dollars on cables?'
For as much as my build performs it needs to look the part. One area I hate my current build in is the cabling, and I've done all I can to manage it. I'm going to see if I can get myself to the level of build I've seen in threads on Anantech, OverclockersClub, and HardOCP, and really step up my game in how the finished product looks. I guess we'll find out.

The rest of the parts I think are pretty self explanatory. They are top class performers from known brands. I doubt there's much I may have missed but if anyone wants to give cause for changes I'm happy to hear it. I'm planning to have this done by Christmas if all goes to plan.

The only thing that actually surprised me was the case. But that was because I didn't see the cables. And I'm still wondering: What's so special abou these cables to justify that price? I mean not for you necessarily, but in general? Or is that just because they're fancier and they know they can charge that price?

Btw. I've bought this beauty and I love its visuals. I made sure to use 2 large fans at the front with lots of LEDs (the first time I did something like this) because they highlight the hex pattern at the front adding a sparkling effect as you move your head. And the tinted glass sides tone down the bright LEDs on the inside, making it overall a really classy object in my living room. Cable management is meh, so it's probably nothing for you, but at least airflow is decent.

Otherwise I think passive cooling is awesome, if you can still call it passive considering all those case fans. :P But my bet is on it working out alright for idle-medium load, but any serious usage of all these cores is bound to create too much heat. Anyways, let me know how it turns out.

They need to color match the build. All black cables aren't going to cut it. Anything Grey/Silver will help tie the build together.

I like InWin's work recently, they're really doing interesting things. Previously I was considering the 909, but the lack of 5.25 bays was too much of an issue.

The CPU cooler is shipped fanless, but those 3 Cryorig fans in the parts list are whats going on it. The Tisis was within 3 degrees of a D15 with 50% slower fans. Its my calculated guess that with 3 fans with a higher max RPM for load situations, that it will be the best cooler short of doing an actual liquid loop. I'm putting that calculation to the test come build time.

Ya, I assumed that they feature "something" which make them interesting to you. But in genereal, why do colored cables cost that much?

I guess the only reason to have them is cosmetics so they are priced accordingly. Its a luxury item in a way. The ones I selected are from a shop I found that does cable wrapping to order with a lot of color options. I could go buy a bunch of Bitfenix Alchemy extensions instead but the price wouldn't be much different, and I'd like to support what seems to be a small and dedicated shop.

An artist's depiction of an Extended Unit Death

I don't see why you're spending so much on case fans and not going for the top selling model.

Why'd you pick the 7900X over the 7920X? Or why pick either over the 7700K with better IPC, or Threadripper at better multi-core performance? Seems like a strange niche where you don't care about price/performance, but end up with inferior performance at a premium price. Plus, in a couple months they'll all be obsolete to the 7980XE.

The fans I chose are the right sizes, right colors, and right RPM limits for my application. The fans serve a function but their aesthetics are just as important in this case.

Its my belief that 10c/20t is enough cores/threads for me to be happy for now, I get the Intel single core advantage for things that do not scale well, and its few enough cores that when I go for a uniform overclock I can hit a good target because I'm not going crazy on core count. Its a middle ground that I think will serve me very well.

We install and support car wash systems, primarily their POS, associated peripherals, and a local server that runs said POS and the business in general. We also do drive-up touch screen kiosks with RFID access + gates, as well as relay timing controllers for things like the car wash tunnel or self serve bays. Sometimes I'm at the office taking calls and sometimes I'm traveling the US doing installs.

Hear me Raor!!

I somewhat agree with roy on a few things.
If you are going to get such a high end m2. Just get two 500 and raid0 them. Now twice the speed and same storage.
I am not quite sure your thought on the i9, but meh its a good processor no matter what. Also If I were you and wanted to go with 32gbs of ram off the back. I would just do two 16gb modules. So I could hit that boards max eventually.
I would also wait until nvidia drops vega but that is me ha. That 1080TI will be plenty.

Also I have not done a power gauge on this, but just looking at what you have. I don't see the need for 1000W. Are you planning on SLI two 1080s?

None.

I'd rather not deal with RAID if I don't have to. And a high end NVME SSD should be 'fast enough' for now. ;o

Quad channel or GTFO.

Look up some reviews on what i9 power draw is like when OC'd to its limit. People were having the motherboard VRMs fail due to the power draw.

High end mobo already have 2 m2 and raid built right in. Should be very easy to achieve. (These mobos are adding raided m.2 for a reason I would presume) Sure m2 is fast - but you could get 3-4x the performance and same storage for prob very close to that same 1 1tb m2 drive. 1tb m2 unless you are paying a shit ton are going to be the slowest in the market for the most part. Since you are paying for the higher storage count. There is a reason that mobo is much more expensive than others.. Might as well utilize it to get the best performance.

2 dual channel is not going to be that much worse(If you want to wait) You will always be able to have quad once you pop another 2 dimms in. (You will than be at 64gbs.. If you are spending the money. Might as well spend it ha )

I did a power calculator test and went to 4.5 and still didnt' hit over 800watts.(Which i doubt in all hell you will get anywhere close to 4.5 especially on air) This was also with overclocking your gpu. (Perhaps calculators are slightly off since i9 is new though. I dunno still seems over kill imo)

You can't know the wattage for certain unless you know what the vcore is going to need to be at that level which is going to vary chip to chip. I expect to end up with 100-200w of headroom and thats exactly how I want it.
