Worker+Arbiter Recall ore gathering trick?

Here is the story:
I was working on my map today, it has a section where there is a short maze for an SCV to traverse, to gather minerals.
I give each player an Arbiter with cost-free Recall.

I was testing manipulation of this mineral-gathering rate, so for a while I was just recalling the SCV back and forth. Each time I recalled the SCV next to the command center, I had to manually make it return it's load, of course.

Then I decided to position the Arbiter over unwalkable terrain, but still next to the command center, and Recall the SCV as soon as it had gathered a chunk of minerals..
To my surprise the SCV basically near-instantly turns around, empty handed, and goes back to mine more minerals, and my mineral count goes up by 8, showing that the minerals had been gathered.

Can anyone explain this?
It's quite neat, I've never heard of it before.. I assume it's documented somewhere?

Ok wait, this just got a whole lot weirder..

I was continuing testing just now, and I accidentally recalled my worker again after they were going back for more minerals.

The SCV stopped in it's tracks, and turned to mine minerals... from a tile away. !! how is this happening?!

Here is the screenshot I just took:

scratch that.. apparently any distance from the mineral field will work...

I see you !

Did you recall after the mineral gathering animation had started, or before?

An artist's depiction of an Extended Unit Death

This is a known glitch that has been featured in maps such as "Can You Do 25 Tricks?", though it appears we don't have it documented in our wiki. Here's a write-up I did a while ago describing it:

Quote from Roy
In regards to the long-distance mining trick, two things are required:

1) The worker has an active order to harvest/return resources
2) The worker gets moved to an invalid location

In-game, this is achieved by putting an Arbiter over some water or other unwalkable terrain and casting Recall on the worker. This will attempt to move the worker to the Arbiter, but because the worker cannot go there, it remains in place. However, this tricks the game into believing the worker has stopped because it is in range of harvesting/returning a resource, and so the worker begins to harvest/return its target from afar.

Using triggers, we don't even need to bother with an Arbiter's Recall: we can use the "Move Unit" action to attempt to move the worker onto water. This will of course fail, so the worker won't move at all, but it creates the desired effect of long-distance mining.

it's very neat. Maybe I did learn of it many years ago on that 25 tricks map but forgot, who knows.

I wonder how it was deduced that the scv harvests/returns because the game thinks it stopped to mine?

The glitch also works with Zerg units entering nydus canal, SCVs which are moving to continue an incomplete construction, Queens moving to infest CCs (The area around arbiter has to be blocked by a group of air units).

It even works with workers that are moving to construct buildings, but only if they are 1-2 tiles away from the target - it can still be used to jump over a single unwalkable rectangular tile.

very cool. And I guess all that would factor into how the deduction of how it occurs was made.

If you are completing an unfinished building with an SCV, the SCV will float across any number of unwalkable tiles too.

If you can recall the SCV twice (so you start flying first, then recall affects it again) then you start building the building in mid-air.

This is featured in the map "Tricks Nova".
