I was just curious if anybody else here has had the chance to watch Game of Thrones?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game_of_Thrones

It's based off a series of books written by George R. R. Martin. It's a medieval fantasy drama, and it is by far the show I am looking forward to most this year. I've mentioned it a few times in the shoutbox in the past, but I think it deserves a more sincere recommendation than my shoutbox ramblings.

I don't know how to put into words how great of a show it was. I don't know if you guys watch a lot of television, or are into fantasy and what not, but even if you aren't, I think it's still a show you can really appreciate. Even my ex, who has made fun of me and how nerdy/dorky my interests are has fallen in love with it. I plan on starting the book series, as well, and I've only heard good things about the books if you're more of a reader than a watcher.

Enjoy!

And if my recommendation doesn't convince you, then perhaps this will.

A couple people I know are OBSESSED with this. They're obsessed with the books and the show. They keep trying to convince everyone to read the series. I kinda want to, but I feel like I'd read five pages and then just leave the book to collect dust for two months. :\

@picture: I suggested a Game of Thones mafia? lul I don't even remember saying that. :P

The book series didn't have a crazy following (only 15 million sold in series, compared to Harry Potter's 450 million) but I think the tv show has made it massively popular. So much so that GoT is practically mainstream now. Sadly, I don't think the books have had as much success as the show - I mean, I don't think the tv show popularity has spread across to book popularity yet.
This is due in part to its R+18 rated nature, of course you are going to have less sales if its not something PG like Harry Potter.

I found out about GoT when season 2 was airing, and watched them all at once, then smashed the book series while waiting for season 3. Have to say the tv show is awesome, but the books have dropped the ball since books 4 and 5 (the ones that took the longest to make).

There's also a big question now if the tv show will actually overtake the books. That would be awesome and I don't think has ever happened before (Dexter, maybe?).

George R.R. Martin talked about this before and said that he has pretty much spoiled the remainder of the story to the show developers. He never said how many books it would take or anything like that, but that it was coming to an end. My guess would be two more books, tops. It's also highly suggested that the show could possibly pass up the books in story.

Beware: the following trailer contains what I believe to be plot spoilers if you have not read the books.

This will be weirdest experience for me ever.

First I see first two seasons. Then I read all 5 books. Then I see another two seasons - now with book knowledge.

And now I'm about to see seasons in front of the books. What a ride!

Anyone wanna 'call it now' on the details of Jon Snow's resurrection?

I think Mel is going to sacrifice herself to Longclaw (Lightbringer), Ghost could possibly be offered up as a sacrifice too.
I think Jon will be mentally damaged like Beric is.
I think he will quit the Night's Watch (his death having released him from his vow) and go south with a willdling army to fight Boltons.

Examining other blood sacrifices here is what I've got:

* Mirri Maz Duur brings back Drogo. Requires the sacrifice of Drogo's horse AND Drogo and Dany's unborn child. Result is a comatose Drogo who Dany smothers to death out of pity. I guess Mirri was a pretty shitty blood magician. But she does drop an important quote which can help us infer Jon's situation. "Only life can pay for death."
* Thoros of Myr brings back Beric Dondarrion MULTIPLE times. I think 6 in total. It requires no sacrifices whatsoever, which is weird, and directly contradicts Mirri's statement. In fact I don't even think it is blood magic. All Thoros said he did was prayed to the Red God.
* Beric Dondarrion brings back Catelyn Tully (Lady Stoneheart). He basically passes whatever magic is keeping him alive to her. And he does this by kissing her dead body. Once he does this, he dies, and she revives.

Hmm, that's all the Red God/blood magic related resurrections I know of. Each situation is vastly different. It makes me question if GRRM has even bothered to use a consistent framework for his magic, or he just decides to write whatever sounds cool?

ALL PRAISE YOUR SUPREME LORD CORBO

I have just one thing to say.

GoT has done many terrible things. Terrible, cruel, heart-crushing things.

But in my opinion this is by far the worst of all.

Causal loops may be un-intuitive, but they are not paradoxical with series-A time (where there is only one timeline, and visiting the past does not branch the timeline/change things, you can only do what you were already going to have done, so to speak), which at this point I think we can confirm is the show's time/causality model.

I doubt I got the tenses right:

That was like super deep jjf

No really, it does make sense. To me it was just like he was supposed to be there and wasn't changing anything because he WAS supposed to be there.

Also, it is my understanding that he was taken to that precise moment, like most of the times he was shown the past and he was taken there probably for a reason, no?

fuck you all
