Alright so I was cleaning my laptop and I found some slots that weren't being used, 2 RAM slots one small thing when I took appart my keyboard (which I don't care about) and I found this:

Which I don't know what it is but it might be something interesting like a SSD slot or something I'd like to have upgraded.


So I have a few questions:

1. What is it? What can it go in it and what would that be for?

2. I am considering buying more RAM sticks to fill those spare slots. I am considering going for 2x4GB sticks So I can have 16GB total (right now that's what I have so I would be dubling it) OR I would get all 4x8GB and have 32GB total. My question is, would shoving more RAM into it increase the temperature the laptop reaches? Would it be an issue?

3. Can laptop fans be upgraded?

First of all make sure the model of the laptop / motherboard is capable of using that much RAM. It's not uncommon for older laptops to be limited to 4 or 8 GB of RAM.

The temperature is not going to change noticably, neither by number of sticks nor by capacity. The most you'll be able to change temps is by overclocking, but still not much. CPU and GPU govern all other factors.

Not sure if there are custom fans/coolers for your specific model. Outside of enthusiast/modding scene this is very uncommon. If you want your system to run cooler you should put it on a laptop cooler.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think that's connecting the hard drive on the left to the mother board. There's components in the physically sitting in that space. I don't see how a card would fit there or how it would be seated.

If you know the model number number, you can find the technical specs of your laptop on the manufacturer's website. That will give you all the information you need.

It looks like just the exposed wiring of the connector for the HDD.

The metal pins you're focusing belong to the micro SATA connector.

It seems some variant of that motherboard is UMTS/LTE capable but yours is missing the module. The WWAN (Wireless Wide Area Network = cellular network) letters and solder points are the giveaways.

So it's nothing fun that I can improve on to?

You can buy a cellular modem and get internet access anywhere. Other than that, not really.

Most likely he can't. I don't see any connectors, just that solder point which probably means it's not an optional slot where you can just shove the module in, but you'd have to buy another model that already has it.
See the empty area with "dead" conducting paths in the first pic? It's top left of "H28" and marked with 2 large white brackets. This is where the connector of the module should probably be.

Laptops have only very limited upgrade options by design. You can't both have a small chassis but also keep room for potential upgrades.
But most laptops do have PCIMCIA slots, where you could put in add-on cards, like a LTE modem or tv card.
Other upgrade options:
- Replacing the HDD with a SSD (the single most useful upgrade any system can have - it beats CPU by miles and usually even RAM in terms of responsiveness)
- Adding / Replacing RAM (read the manual how much the mobo can take)
- Replace the DVD drive with a BD drive, or some models even offer secondary batteries in that slot.
- Anything USB
- Other external addons like the mentioned cooling plate.

The HDD (Scorpio Blue) is already plugged in. The photo shows the back of the connector.

That's what I wanted to do, get an SSD. But that means that I'll have to sacrifice 500GB (one HD) in order to get one and I manage a lot of data. Already struggling with 1TB enough...

I could buy a 1TB HD and a SSD, though, I know that but I don't feel like spending that much. Specially since I am really going to be getting some RAM.

What CPU is in there? If it is Intel, look up the exact CPU model name online (you might find the name in System properties in Windows) and you should find an Intel page that tells you how much the CPU supports (often intentionally limited on Intel CPUs, as far as I can tell).

CPUs don't really have any practical limitation on RAM, if they're a 64 bit CPU. Sure, there will be one, but it's usually 64 or 128gb or something like that - only need to worry about if it you're building really high-performance servers or workstations.

For the general desktop or laptop, the limiting factor is the motherboard - basically how many physical slots it has to install RAM into.

Actually, they do have limits if they are Intel. The worst offender I've seen is that some versions of Intel's Atom CPU had a 2 GB limit and refused to use any more than that, even if the computer could otherwise use more, even on Atoms with 64-bit support. Some Celerons and Pentiums have an 8 GB limit (some could have a higher limit, but those are the first examples I found and it is relevant to my point). Higher end CPUs will have higher limits, like 16 GB, 32 GB, or even more.

Internet says 32GB max RAM. Is this correct? I have 4 slots in the motherboard. 2 being used.

The motherboard will be the main limiter for the amount of RAM that can be used. Don't assume that because the CPU can support 32gb, that the motherboard can too.
