Still Napping

Quote from Lanthanide
The last shot of Dr Brand, standing and looking at her little basecamp, IIRC right after Murph has said she would be "standing under an alian sky" etc, she didn't look like she'd aged at all.

So presumably she was in the time slip when she slingshotted around the black hole. But Cooper went *into* the blackhole, which I've heard actually stretches time to near-infinity (so that you 'never enter the blackhole').

Also, as for mass not travelling back in time, clearly Cooper was able to influence the past directly when he saw Brand going through the wormhole, and stretched out to 'shake' her hand.

Yeah, her slingshot around Gargantua is what's responsible for her still being young. The movie handled dilation well.

But they completely fudged up on the blackhole bit. We don't know exactly everything about black holes, but we do know that when you fall into one, you're speghettified. It's important to note that with all physical phenomenon, singularities are not truly infinite in reality, but it may be convenient to think of them as such.

Can someone explain to me why Matthew McHonahey said they had to not bring the main ship into the orbit of the time dilation planet, but instead sent the little ship instead? What difference did that make? They still ended up spending a fuck-tonne of time there.

I think it was just Coop's idea to "get in and out fast" - if they'd gone into orbit, and *then* sent the small ship down before returning to the ship in orbit, the total length of time spent deep in the gravity well would be significantly more than what they did end up spending.

But as I commented earlier, that whole decision was really derpy and seemingly rushed for silly reasons. Basically Nolan had to get everyone on Earth to age by 23 years to make the plot work, so had to invoke time dilation to achieve it.

Oh okay. Yeah - it did seem like a major risk. Also I thought scientists could tell those sorts of things about a planet without having to land on it?

We know about the composition of the atmosphere of Pluto and we're far further away from that than being in orbit around it.

The whole idea that they had to send humans through in the first place, instead of just sending probes, was never adequately addressed.

Math + Physics + StarCraft = Zoan

I thought they sent probes that told them there were potentially habitable planets on the other side, and then they sent people through to see if they actually were habitable, or something.

Yes, which doesn't address why more probes wouldn't have worked.

Even if the problem was "we can't get signals back through the wormhole" or "we can't get probes can through the wormhole", the solution is to send humans through the wormhole, and then come back through to relay the data. There's no reason they should ever need to physically land on the planets.

Loved the movie. Everything was awesome, the science, the story, the made-up-part about what goes on inside the black hole it was really well done. All except 1 little problem, which didnt really ruin things for me but still I found annoying.

Here's the issue:
They knew it was 7 years Earth time per hour water-planet time.
They knew they'd sent the human explorer 10 years ago.
It takes 2 years to reach the wormhole from Earth.
Therefore: Over that 2+7+2 year period where Matt's gang was being assembled and travelling to the water-planet (or even just during the 2-year period during which Matt's gang was flying to the wormhome), HOW DID NOT ONE FUCKING NASA PHYSICIST REALIZE THE EXPLORER WOULD'VE ONLY BEEN THERE FOR 1 HOUR? The decision to go down to that planet AT ALL was the only truly retarded thing in that movie. Also if the time dilation effect was that prominent, there would be significant non-linearities in the time dilation due to the rotation of the planet (if you're on the side closer to the black hole time would move slower than the far side since the dilation magnitude is so great). Worst fucking decision ever made.

From the perspective of an outside observer it would appear that Matt never actually enters the black hole due to the time dilation effect. From the perspective of the person falling into the black hole time would appear to run normally, until he crossed the schwartzchild radius (event horizon) at which point YAY MAGIC because no one knows what happens in there.

My girl is a Ph.D Astrophysics and we had some good long conversations about this movie after we saw it :D

Very interesting article which is an interview with Kip Thorne, the astrophysicist that contributed all the science to the movie. Seems like a lot of it really is above-board (although requiring very particular circumstances to all line up, eg Miller's planet has only 'recently' entered into that orbit around the black hole, etc).
