Cross-platform player colors (Windows XP/7)

After some testing by various users, it became known that the extra player colors do not appear the same for all people on Windows XP and Windows 7. Colors which seem black for XP users looks terrible for Win7 users, and vice versa.

However, it has been discovered that 138 is a solid black for both XP and Win7 users. Thanks to Leeroy_Jenkins for bringing this to light.

The short version is, 138 is the only solid black. All other black player colors will not be black, and will look completely terrible, to a lot of other players.

There's another color that would be nice to have, the "Blueish Grey" that's already in the scmdraft dropdown, that one always looked fine in the editor but in-game it was broken in both XP and 7 from what I remember. Will post candidates here when I find some.

Sorry, 138 is not perfect for me under Win7:

Also, if you want to claim a color is "perfect", please specify whether you mean on one or all tilesets, since the extended colors do vary a bit on that basis.

None.

Dec 13 2012, 5:54 pm Azrael Post #4

That's odd, since we've only had two segments of people who viewed the colors differently, and both of those segments viewed 138 correctly.

Do you know if there's something that would be different about your installation of Win7 that would make it differ from everyone else's?

Please open this map and take a screenshot. It's hard to tell on your screenshot exactly what's wrong (it looks like it's still black).

Also, a solid black would generally be tested on the Jungle tileset, although the black variants I've used before don't differ across tilesets.

It may be harder to tell from a screenshot than in-game, but the 138 row has some tan irregularities on the units.

Is your Windows 7 tester using Blizzard's fix for the Windows 7 color anomalies?

None.

That's a good question (I haven't heard of this fix previously).

Roy, TF, or Oh Man, are you using this "color fix"? Input from anyone else on Win7 would be useful.

On a side note, your mixed units don't look too bad (as in, they look better than the many other mixed units people took screenshots of; this appears to be the least severe instance of noise on the unit colors by far). Luckily your minimap color was unaffected as well ^^

No, I use windowed mode, so I don't have the color issues that occur in fullscreen vs explorer.exe.

I assume the color fix you're talking about is from here.

Windowed before fix: Works
Fullscreen before fix: Works

Windowed after fix: Works
Fullscreen after fix: Works

The color fix for me only works in the briefing and in-game; the menus still glitch up. Not sure if your experience is similar.

Are you using x86 or x64 architecture? That is almost definitely a factor in player colors as well. I'm running x64.

Yes, the menus, b.net in particular, still screw up. But you don't spend that much time looking at them anyway.

Also I doubt x86 or x64 would matter; the Starcraft binary is x86 and Windows 7 runs this natively.

For me, the battle.net menus still screw up, but I no longer have any in-game problems. Before the color fix, I was having in-game color distortion on Twilight and Ash World tilesets. After applying "scbw116_x64.reg", there are no longer any in-game issues.

FWIW, I'm on x64 architecture, with a Radeon 7870 GPU.

Alright, then, it seems the color fix did "work" for me. So that's likely not the issue.

I don't know very much about the innards of the program, but from the conversation in the Shoutbox yesterday, I think it very well could matter, because SC seems to reference system files that may vary on different architectures.

I was mostly saying that based on the strings I saw. I was mostly trying show a bit of how arbitrary and broad the data sources that becomes player colors are...

Yeah, 138 doesn't look right......I checked on different PCs both at work and at home, for my map 138 looks like this:

From what farty says this variation between maps is to be expected. I wonder how easy it would be to write a plugin for this color thing.

Changing player colors with a plugin would be extremely easy. You can do it with EUD Actions.

It seems then that 138 works for all Windows XP users, and many Windows 7 users.

For some reason some Windows 7 users get slight noise on units that are still black and maintain a black minimap color.

It might be helpful to figure out what the difference is between the solid and almost-solid Win7 users is.

What about sidestepping this issue by having selectable colors for your units in-game? You could avoid broken/unsavory colors that way.
Without EUDs I imagine you need to use a rescuable player for each color beyond the default, since rescuing a unit is the only way to change its owner but keep the color.

Well there are certainly some colors that are more cross-platform than others, like 138 for example.

Yeah I'm not taking credit for it.... All I said in the other thread was that I had been told 138 is the best. I would've given you credit... but all you did was pass the word along, much like I am now :)
