OVERWATCH STATUS GO

Rather than going on and on about smileys in the suggestions thread, I decided to make this into a new thread for discussion. Note that I do not plan on adding any new smileys. Suggestions for new smileys will be deleted. I'd like to consolidate the existing smileys, however, and remove ones that are never used or would never be used.

Below is Kame's original post about smileys:

If there is such an issue that someone needs banned they should be reporting the post - making posts with an emote (heaven forbid just that and nothing more) is straight up spam. Also, it stretches text. same with

:bang: same as above. And redundant for :bash: which takes less space.

:bye1: :bye2: :bye3: a little redundant, isn't it? I think we should keep :bye3:

 and :cool2: again, redundant. I like  better, personally.

:dontgetit: I'd use this one if it had a more palatable name, like  A little redundant for but I do like the way it looks.

:...: when has this been used last? And again...it stretches. Same with and

:$: has this ever been used?

is a little redundant of its more popular counterpart (and although it stretches I really like keeping for crude instances that really raise the bar)

is a nice idea but is very dirty looking.

and are very close to the same.

maybe should be changes to ; or something more representative.

Given that this isn't Null and a topic like this could get out of hand, keep your posts on topic.

:$: has this ever been used? I see no reason why this should be taken out. We at SEN are money greedy.

is a nice idea but is very dirty looking. Not a pressing matter.

and are very close to the same. Yea. I like ohno more.

maybe should be changes to ; or something more representative. Uhh... I don't understand the argument behind this one.
Now I have no idea how removing these smilies would help SEN, but if it does, then here's my opinion.

wth is starcraft

I should add that as the conversation went on, it seems apparent that both  and :cool2: should remain as they have separate purposes and (allegedly) are both used frequently...I don't know if any other significant points were brought up though.

I've never seen any of these smilies used. ;-) doesn't even look like its text form, :$: is stupid and doesn't even work, and  and the same as :lightbulb:

And smilies that I believe are not accurate portrayals of the text face: (excluding the ones already mentioned)

:0_o:
:bored:
:-_-:
:stfu:
:<_<:

Smiles that I believe should be removed due to redundancy:

Smilies I think should be removed due to redundancy: (cont.)

:scared:  or

:lightbulb: or
 or :ermm:

Smilies I think should be removed because no one uses them: (Kame already mentioned most of them)

 looks better than :lightbulb:

:-( is more popular than the other too. Same with :ermm: and  (though the latter of this usually is replaced with :hurr:)

Oct 12 2012, 10:52 pm Vrael Post #8

I think all smileys should remain, except those we specifically want to change for purposes like adding a :dem0n: or :herapderp: smiley or whatever. Power to the smileys! There's really no reason to get rid of them, they're not hurting anything, unless you have a better image with which to replace an existing smiley.

OVERWATCH STATUS GO

As some people have pointed out, though, I do find some of the smiley images misrepresenting what the emoticon or word they are supposed to convey. So even if I don't remove unused ones, I'd like those to be fixed somewhat.

Just here for the pie

I would be willing to fix some. Just tell me which ones you need fixed.

OVERWATCH STATUS GO

I meant fixed in terms of changing the text/emoticon that makes them appear.

No. First off the eyes are directionalized in the emote, and second off making ascii emotes into picture emotes breaks like rule #35 of the internet.
Quote
:stfu: changed to :X and new face added for stfu
Same thing with this one. Ascii should always be ascii.

Yea but <_< has a more "roll eyes" feel and both :<_<: and -_- have a more "disappointed" feel.

Quote from name:Raccoon

This definitely shouldn't be removed.

Quote from name:Raccoon
:-_-: changed to :idc: (maybe?)

It has two things that currently work for it: :-_-: and , neither of which I think convey its apparent expression. :-_-: should definitely not refer to this smiley.

I've tried using this emoticon a number of times, and usually type :vv: because that's what seems like the logical text for it.

I just searched the shoutbox and I've actually whispered :vv: to people before lol.

I think :-_-: should be changed to :vv:

Quote from name:Raccoon
:<_<: changed to -_- and center the eyes (or not)

This one actually would work as :-_-:. As TiKels mentioned, popular ASCII emoticons shouldn't be directly replaced, although there's nothing wrong with sticking colons on either side of them.

Quote from name:Raccoon
:wtfage: changed

I disagree. :wtfage: is one of the few I actually use quite a bit. If you want to add an additional text thing to it, sure. The only thing that :wtfage: should possibly be replaced with is :wtf:, because it really is the perfect description of its expression.

Quote from name:Raccoon
;-) changed to :phew:

100% agreed. I'm not sure how ;-) got attached to any smiley, let alone one that isn't even winking.

I agree with everything except I don't think the eyes need to be centered, and maybe :stfu: should be :nocomment: ... :X used to be the grossed out face, so that'd cause some confusion.

No way, way too long. I still think ones like :massimo: are borderline too long of a name. Nothing should be two or more words like that. Seriously. It takes away from the ease of writing them. I tend to use that smilie when it's a topic that seems awkward or like I'm admitting something I've done wrong.

Admittedly I don't use it a lot ;D

No way, way too long.

I also think :nocomment: is probably too long, although it's more accurate than :stfu:. Seven characters is about the limit, I think.

Maybe :noreply: or :resist:? It seems like the smiley indicates that you want to say something, but are resisting the temptation to do so.

And there is nothing wrong with :massimo:, leave it be.

Yea I guess it's long but I've always taken that smiley to mean you're like pleading the fifth, or holding your tongue. How about :duress:? Would many of the users even know what that means?
