When I leave my computer running for a day straight, my internet cannot connect to MSN Messenger and Firefox, but can connect to AIM and IRC chat. Until I restart my computer, which is a pain to startup. Anyone know why?

Aw man so many people have vista and I'm stuck with XP. Anyways I dunno when I'll get vista but I hope SCI works well on it.

Heh, well no need to rush to it, though, unless you are having issues with XP. Also, if you want to upgrade to it on an existing computer, it would be a good idea to try it out first to see if it works properly (only if you have another hard drive you could try it out on). If you want to try it out, you could either find someone with a Vista DVD and borrow it or you could download the iso and burn it to a disc (I'm sure they wouldn't mind, as long as you are only using it to install the trial version).

After getting a DVD, you could install a trial version of Vista to a hard drive that doesn't have an OS on it (probably wouldn't be a good idea to upgrade your existing OS when you haven't decided whether to buy it yet). Since you would be installing it to a different drive than your main OS, it would probably be best to run the installer by booting from the DVD. When installing, simply don't enter in a key when it prompts for it. After that, it will ask you which version you want to install; pick the one you would intend to buy if you decided to buy it later. If you would be buying an upgrade version, after it is done installing, install it again but this time from within Vista, and again enter no key and select the version you would intend to buy. This is required for it to count as an upgrade version; you can't use an upgrade key in a normal fresh install of Vista.

If your 30 days are about to expire and you haven't yet decided whether to purchase it, open up a command prompt as administrator and type:
slmgr -rearm

This will reset the trial time back to 30 days; it can be done up to 3 times total, so you can have up to 120 days to try out Vista.

Yeah I wouldnt jump on getting vista right away since it isnt really reccomended to upgrade to vista your better off buying a harddrive with it on or computer with it on. And yeah starcraft runs fine on Vista for me and ive had vista for months now

Ok, I have a test for you, restart your computer, than tell me how many processes are running when you first start it up. Next, let your computer run to the point where it can't run firefox/msn, than tell me how many processes are running.

VISTA SUCKS DO NOT GET IT
IT's a Rip off of Machintos
It doesn't allow you to do any old stuff
It always requires you to run as administrator to get certain programs running properly EVEN THO YOU'RE THE ADMINISTRATOR ..

It just sucks

I don't care what people say about Vista, it's worth getting just for the sake that it's got such a more sexy design then XP, the security thing isn't that big a deal, all that jazz that people argue about isn't that big a deal, it's just so much sicker then XP.

I still don't know what new things Vista is actually offering. I mean, for like 200-300 bucks I sure would like to know why I supposedly would want it so bad. Besides having a different look (which can also already been done in XP, with an extra program that is) why is it or could it be better then XP?

IMO i believe it is too early to get vista. I might wait a couple more years or so before getting it so that the newer programs/softwares are more vista compatible (and perhaps fix some more bugs/exploits/etc).

i recently bought a new laptop. windows xp works fine. its fine for me as long as games and stuff runs on it. probably he next time i buy a laptop, they'll include a newer operating system..

thing about vista is that they rushed the release on it if i recall...so it wasn't fully tested and its extremely glitchy and buggy. incompatibility issues were the most thing people had problems with. one of my friends bought vista and tried it, computer was crashing and stuff wouldn't run and he returned it...

XP Rocks!
Besides that is those different types of Linux out there (Red Hat, Fedora, the user-friendly Ubuntu, etc.) that are free (yes, F R E E). You can get many of them from Linux Online, but make sure you start reading the stuff before you do something wrong.

<EDIT START>
dumbducky posted while I was preparing my post.
dumbducky, if you are talking about using Windows only, then let me tell you that Linux can look and feel like Windows.

Very very wrong. They didn't rush it at all(besides some skimping on features). In fact they delayed it behind the holiday release. The incompatibility issues are things that are just gonna happen. Vista revamps everything so much for security sake, that some programs that used malicious ways of doing things just don't work anymore. Programmer's that did things retarded had there applications not work right. Plus some driver issues because Vista rewrote the sound driver implementation to reduce crashes, and rewrote graphic driver implementation to reduce crashes, make graphics more consistent between cards, make it easier for programmers, and speed. Beyond that most drivers should work just fine.

Not really. Yeah it can emulate the look. However Vista really does integrate a lot into it all. You can really customize a lot more on explorer, and the usability has been vastly improved on explorer. Furthermore, usually those extra programs arn't really hardware accelerated to the fullest and usually are quite slow.

Most applications work perfectly fine with Vista. Older and Newer. The only programs that don't are some anti-virus programs or programs that require certain XP kernal functions(which most shouldn't except anti-virus programs). This reason really isn't valid.

The only reason not to get Vista is because you're satisifed with Xp, or whatever OS you're running. XP is a great OS and Vista doesn't bring all that much more to the table. However, Vista is still a fantastic OS and better than XP. To go further and slam Vista for *bugs, crashes, etc* is retarded and untrue. Especially if you havn't used Vista RC2 or Final release Vista over the course of at least a month.

I had some examples of a couple of these that I posted somewhere. I'll see if I can find where it was that I posted them...

-EDIT-

Ah, here it is: http://www.staredit.net/?findpost=6323

The two things I mention there are a couple of the big ones, things having been done wrong in various third-party programs for years.

On a related note, I recently read something from Microsoft that running all users in non-admin mode by default in Vista is partly for protecting Windows but then partly to get programmers to clean up their act, as far as where they make their programs store data and settings, etc. and getting them to minimize or eliminate usage of things that require administrative access.

ATM, both my Vista computers have been online for over a month straight, and i'm fine? My only complaint is that SC is messed up on one of em.
