idk man, elder scrolls is single player and works well as a single player.
Sounds like a cash cow D:
Could be cool though, we'll see. If there weren't too many people per server maybe...

Jack, I think the words you're looking for are "cash grab". All MMO's by definition are "Cash Cows", but only if they succeed.

Judging by the fact the developer isn't even Bethesda themselves... well, I won't put any more thought into this than I would any other of the billion Western MMO's flooding the market.

Show them your butt, and when you do, slap it so it creates a sound akin to a chorus of screaming spider monkeys flogging a chime with cacti. Only then can you find your destiny at the tip of the shaft.

That's probably a fair outlook of what seems to be going on here. Zenimax sees an opportunity for profit.

Quote from here
"The Elder Scrolls Online is not our next project, its a ZeniMax Online Studios game," said a Bethesda Softworks rep on Twitter. Zenimax is Bethesda Softworks' parent company.
Maybe I'm being cynical about it, but it sounds like Bethesda doesn't really want to associate themselves with the game. I hope at least someone from the BGS team is involved with the project.

Oh, I see what happened. Zenimax feels like they can make loads of money and Bethesda cringes while the parent company takes what they laboriously built and ruins it.

An Elder Scrolls MMO doesn't sound very good, imo. A co-op version of the game would be fun, but playing with millions of others seems like it would ruin the series, especially since it's so story-driven, and stories in MMOs always suck.

In any case you guys shouldn't expect the next Elder Scrolls title but just another MMO. I think that's what the Bethesda representative meant to say.
If you expect it to feel like Elder Scrolls you're gonna be disappointed and probably rate it worse than it is.
When you compare it to other MMOs I think it has potential, at least judging from the gameinformer article.

No, we don't like it when people ruin stuff.

Metroid Prime? Over 250k in sales in the first week. Other M? It couldn't even sell 200k copies in a month.

Why? Because Nintendo ripped the game from Retro Studios and thought they could cash in with B-rate shit.

---

There are two things in game design that a lot of companies plain out don't get.

1) Dumping money on the game doesn't make it better.

2) Game design is an art, not an industry.

Bethesda understands these things, and have really pushed forward TES series. Retro Studios understood these things (before the lead designers left to make Armature Studios). Activision and Zenimax do not.

MMOs are all about balance and how every class and shit is equal in the end. TES is all about freedom and outsmarting the game with the given freedom. Either it's going to be imbalanced MMO or boring TES lacking the freedom we all love about TES. Although TES might involve a certain amount of grinding, MMOs are all about grinding.

Seems like it actually might be OK. Hard to tell without videos of it but I'm certainly more hopeful.

wth is starcraft

No Redguards? :(

This is very different from what I was expecting, especially the five button part. I like the three faction thing. I want to see game play first before I get too wrapped up, but it looks interesting. Questing confirmed for WoW clone then? Phasing and guilds sounds weird. I like the idea of choosing who you play with based on what others want, but what will happen when you change your mind? XD

Who am I kidding. I'll probably pay full price plus whatever sub fee immediately. :kame:

I don't advocate Bethesda making TES Online.

Just look at what they did with Skyrim. They very nearly got their formula right, they built a huge immersive world, and really poured effort into making it unique.

Now, the problem with an MMO in all of the world is that you have areas of the world that you have to build from scratch. Morrowind, Cyrodil, and Skyrim have been built, but there are still a huge swath of places unknown to the players of TES, and ripe for the same kind of push done with Skyrim. They have a chance to push past Skyrim, and make an even more immersive experience, focusing in a single world. But they didn't, and now some intern building some landscape could ruin everything for a TES game down the road.

It feels like a grab for money to me. I don't think the technology is quite where it needs to be to pull this off as well as the team who designed Skyrim would like. And nothing they've said is really innovative. And that's what's getting me, they're giving up innovation for more senior executive bonuses, or something. Or maybe they need more funding to make another, better TES.

In either case, they're doing it for money, it seems like.

---

I don't think I'd like it, for lack of mods (which add massive amounts of content to the game). The thing about MMOs across bigger worlds is that you'll have the same amount of content as you would if you made a smaller game, but because it's bigger, it's more spread out. I predict it won't live up to everyone's expectations.

Actually, this is licensed out from Bethesda - ZeniMax is handling development. I think they're saving the unknown parts of Tamriel (which is just a content - who knows what else the world holds?) for future ES games, not their mmo. And Bethesda is definitely in development already for TESVI...last rumor I heard was that it'd take place in Elswyr or Black Marsh. I'd be happy with Daggerfall.

It is definitely different from TES games, and it looks different from other MMOs.

Ugh just seems like another WoW clone, I heard nothing in that presentation that was even remotely original.

I want an MMO with a hectic meta game. Something where guilds/players can cut swathes in the very landscape and things aren't just all static but instead completely player driven.

This is why WoW hasn't been topped - it innovated, it brought something new to the table, and that's why it now dominates the genre. No one is going to knock WoW off its perch unless they step out of their comfort zone and bring some radical new concepts to the table.

Emulating your predecessor doesn't get the genre anywhere.

From the sounds of it, the big difference is that its one big server that everyone plays on (WoW does a similar thing with battle groups, but not with all servers, mostly due to its large size, and now you can raid with realID friends, but I believe this are both fairly new features, so I can't say it cloned that) which I am looking forward to.

It also opens up how you can combine armor, weapons, and abilities - that's the big thing I am most interested in seeing implemented, and I believe it'll vary largely on how enchanting works. For instance, why does it matter if a mage can wear heavy armor if the heavy armor buffs melee classes? So you can, but it will be pointless. In which case everyone will be rolling the exact same way using the exact same attacks and maneuvers as everyone else, something that I feel really takes away from WoW.
