Hey y'all, it's Jim.
I'm working on some terrain in order to improve my skills, and I am searching for feedback. Right now it's incomplete - terrain is most likely done, but I need a bunch more doodads. I'm looking to see what people think while it's at this stage so it's easier to edit if need be.

I'm assuming this is for a campaign mission, yes? If so, what's the mission going to be like? If there's going to be a lot of forces running around, it may be a little too tight for that. Actually, regardless of what type of mission it is, it looks too tight. The bottom right seems like an almost impossible area to send your forces to effectively because their retarded AI will make them walk all over the place trying to get through those narrow paths.

Actually, Dem0n, this isn't for a campaign at all. It's just an experiment.
Ideally, though, if it were for a campaign or UMS, it would be the type where you get some units and wander around with them. I'll see what I can do about making some of those paths wider.
EDIT:
Some minor changes and doodads later:

This is entirely my opinion, not based on any particular gameplay concerns just visual aesthetics:

I don't get why people don't like to have plain stretches of water. You don't need to put these tiny little islands all over the place. You can just have empty water.

I don't have any particular problem with it. It wouldn't really suit my map, though. It would feel out of place.
Although, I do like having lots of doodads in water, though... big spaces of blue can get a little boring.

I remember i made a bunch of water doodads back in the day.

The in circle thing in the top left can easily be cut off to make a single doodad not attached to anything

Another fine example of water doodads using the bottom titles of the dead white robot thing
(Terrain used in my decommisioned rpg map) http://www.staredit.net/?file=1588

You can also make water trees by using the cliff side along with a tree sprite (top middle of image) of course the effect is better when using jungle tree's however there are some work arounds to this...

Any who about you map there are several obvious problems some already stated...

-Little to no extended terrain however this is not needed for a campaign type map or simple ums
-The base in the bottom right needs more buildings/resources if you plan to have a player/opponent there (unless its decoration then nvm)
-Some areas feel too tight, if its a campaign then unit ai would do terrible on it (edit: you've fixed it however it would of liked to seen extended bridges..., it may seem hard at first compared to jungle bridges but its the same jist... just copy and paste tiles.

I like however that you were willing to try something different and deviate from the norm... Jungle is overused; I'm glad you chose badlands.

Thanks, dude! I'll try to add some fancy stuff to my water.

It is intended as just basic terrain, but I'll probably be doing some extended terrain maps in the future.

Yeah, it's just for decoration. This map isn't a B&D map, so nobody's gonna get real bases.

Okay, I'll try to add some of those.

Thanks a bunch! I always preferred badlands, anyway. :D

Y'all really need to stop hocking your own shit at people when they're looking for feedback on their stuff. Seriously.

The terrain is pretty damned basic but if I had a good long look at it I'd probably be able to give a better view. You told me you'd send me the map when it's done, though, so I can wait.

Thank you, Payne, but I'd prefer some criticism on the map - as in, where to put these brushes, and so on. It's hard to improve my terraining with just a 'Hey, look, these things may help!"
I do appreciate the thought, though.

http://www.staredit.net/starcraft/Terrain_Using_SCMDraft2 (Terrain Process)
http://www.staredit.net/starcraft/Bridge_Terrain (My Bridge Tutorial)

These links really helps...

Also remember to check out the terrain section of the site although there are only a few terrain maps (that i could find); here are the ones that will help you.

http://www.staredit.net/files/13/ (Several Maps Compilation)
http://www.staredit.net/files/1560/ (1 map Compilation)
http://www.staredit.net/files/1588/ (My old rpg map (Unfinished))

What i did when i was starting out was i looked through the terrain maps of the compilation and then tried to recreate a terrain piece. But tbh creating a few terrain pieces and stitching them together makes the terraining process a whole lot easier. And be sure to look though the old terrain threads... Here are the links that most likely help you...

Like I said before, Tempz, I appreciate the gesture, but I know what to do with my map.
I'm moreso looking for direct criticism on my terrain.

Speaking of which, here's an update:

Well, only one thing struck my eyes and kind of disturbed me: the two roads ending so abruptly in the middle-top-right spot.

@Tempz: It's cool, no worries.

@Payne: At first, I didn't really know what I could possibly do about that, but I realised that this was kind of an 'abandoned' terran settlement, so why not tear up the roads a bit? I also (hopefully) made the road system more 'roady' in general.

At my curiousity how good are you at triggering.

I'm a strong triggerer. I won't claim to be amazing at it, but I can do a lot of things.

If you want, you can PM me the map and some things you want me to do. I've never really done many RPG style maps, but I'll see about it.
