I'm sure audio engineering is a lot less math intensive than civil.
I wouldn't be so sure of that. Breaking down waves to find resonance frequencies and stuff can get pretty math intensive.

Quote from Centreri
Perhaps. Maybe Audio Engineeering is so half-assed an engineering discipline that people who do it have enough time to effectively double major. :P
Or maybe people who elect to become Audio Engineers and play music are so much more awsome than you that they can double major in the time it takes you to finish only one?

I have no problem with doing math. Math is a strong-suit of mine. Please guys, keep the constructive ideas flowing..

Ok so it's about time to apply to colleges, this topic needs to be re-brought up...

This topic also has more things now...

Alright, so, my mom basically said that I -have- to give engineering a chance. I asked why and she responded with saying that I would be very good at it due to me being gifted... (I don't care if you think I'm on a "high horse"... It's a factual statement, I have thinking processes and abilities that other people do not that put me at a big advantage, been tested by respected organizations. If you want to take it any farther I'll photocopy results). I would prefer to go to a college with both engineering and jazz studies because of this.

I could fight her on it, but I'd need a reason why, and I really don't know one. Honestly she was pretty pissed off when I brought it up with her again >>

I should probably explain -why- I want to do music (specifically jazz, at this point). I'm going to assume you all are of average music appreciation (which stems to very elementary classifications, such as "this sounds cool/pretty/sad/dubstep"). Music is something that has a degree of depth that very few people understand. Those people are only even a portion of musicians. And it's not an on/off switch, as should be obvious. It's a process. I can say with 100% certainty that my appreciation for music has increased tremendously over the past... two months even. Music is a whole other world to me, it's the most extreme intense feeling ever, and the most mentally challenging... Theory is not excluded from my interests either, its form is mathematical, and there will always be more to learn for the rest of my life. My desire is to perform, whatever that means. It could be on broadway or it could be with a band/jazz band setting.

Engineering is something that would fall fairly easily to me, there is going to be a job for me at the end of it simply because we need engineers, I will have money for it, and I love science and math, and would get to (hopefully) do "cool stuff", as my engineering/math friend says he does.

I am not gonna do audio engineering... no way no how.

If anyone has any college suggestions I welcome them!

You're not going to be very good at making friends in college no matter where you go if that's how you'll treat people who ask what you study.

Sep 16 2011, 10:28 pm Apos Post #65

I order you to forgive yourself!

... :dontgetit: ...

Really?

I mean, your mom is not going to do the studies for you, it's your life. This will probably determine what you do for the rest of your life.

Also, it's not like you will do anything advance in your first year. Choose what you like most and then, see where that orients you. Most of the time, in College, the first year will have different possible paths.

Sep 16 2011, 10:31 pm TiKels Post #66

Starting freshman year with calculus III, dunno if you consider that advanced... I understand that my mom isn't doing the studies for me, but she will be able to financially aid me as I go through...

I doubt she'd like abandon me and not help though...

I recognize that most people change majors while in college. I enjoy music but I don't want to be hungry all my life. I enjoy maths but I don't want to not do music.

I thought we already covered all this stuff on the first page?

You can always do music in your spare time as a hobby. Doing engineering in your spare time as a hobby isn't as easy. Being an engineer will likely get you a high enough paying job that if you want, you can save all your money up for a few years and go back to college or take a sabbatical and go on a round-the-world trip or whatever you want. Music, not so much.

wth is starcraft

In all honesty, I think that if all four/five of your first semester classes were music, I think your academic adviser would call you an idiot. Your first year you should be taking gen eds...they usually transfers easily, but it also gives you a chance to try many things. I know I am now a broken record, but I went to college with the intention of studying tech theater, and now I want to go to law school. You just don't know until you try different things. :)

also my sister has plans to duel major music/math so why shouldn't you?

Anywho... I think I'm going to go to a school (just corresponded with teacher, recommended me Shenandoah, talson, Mcdaniels.... WVU and Youngstown was thrown in the idea pool as well) and pursue engineering, and if I decide to, I will drop it and go for jazz studies instead. If I don't drop it, I will get a good enough amount of dah money and go ahead and re-go-back to school to learn musics.

Opinions on this plan?

Even if you major in music, you're not going to become a professional musician. The best you'll get is probably a music instructor at a school or something.

You said you got a 19-something on your SATs. It doesn't seem like you "have thinking processes and abilities that other people do not," especially when a lot of people here, just on SEN, scored over 2000. <_<

Sep 16 2011, 11:46 pm TiKels Post #72

You seriously are gonna go there aren't you.
The "ability" that I have relates to spatial thinking (aka visual thinking), which is something that the SATs don't care about. Not only that, but to imply that the SATs is a measure of all encompassing intelligence is silly. It's not a general IQ test, and even so, that's not what I'm necessarily good at. Truth is people don't all think with the same methods, much like they don't learn with the same methods.

It was john hopkins iirc, so it's legit.

Also
"Professional musician"... what does that mean to you? To me that means that I understand huge volumes of theory, can play with the style I want to. Contrary to what you seem to believe, there are more jobs for musicians than teaching and being a millionaire.

My point is that most people on SEN are smart. Just because you say that you're above the average person doesn't mean anything. Hell, I'm above the average person. I could do engineering if I wanted to. You don't have to be a complete genius to be an engineer.

Also, we've spent four pages telling you the same thing over and over again. Make YOUR own decision about YOUR life. Stop coming to SEN for all your little problems.

*sigh* I really hate arguing about this because it makes me feel like a conceited asshole.

To go for the testing, you have to get at least a 97% on a standardized testing thing in either... math or some other stuff... i did math (99%), then you have to go to like a preliminary testing thing and get like... top 5% in that (my scores were like 97% 98% 99% on the three areas reading math combined), and then after that I got directed to spatial testing, in which i scored in the top 78-82% with a score of 610 out of 200-800, with 500 being the average of the test takers. That was 6th grade.

If you notice in my last actual on-topic post, I asked if what I was doing was sound. I figured that you all could be able to help me, because, y'know, I'm making my life's decisions. This is not a "little problem". I'm not doing this because I enjoy this, I'm doing it because I want to do better in life.

If you want to do well in life, don't ask for help from people that don't know you. We know nothing about you, except for the fact that you're apparently super smart. If you want some counsel, ask real-life friends. Don't ask randoms online.

Sep 17 2011, 12:05 am TiKels Post #77

It doesn't require personal knowledge to be able to say "that's a shit college" "that plan won't work" now stop spamming my topic. I don't know what your problem is. You are the one who challenged me to prove I was smart.

I said all that needed to be said, now you are implying I'm an asshole for being "apparently super smart" (assuming sarcasm on your part), despite being entirely factual over the course of these last few posts. I just don't get you man. Trying to say YOU AREN'T SMART, and then being a prick when I defend myself.

Did you even look for audio engineering programs, or does that not interest you at all? You never responded.

I'm not saying you aren't smart; I'm just saying that it has absolutely nothing to do with us helping you make a decision. If you're interested in something and you have at least a little bit of chance of doing well in it, then go for it. The reason I'm getting annoying is because for the past four pages, we've all said the same thing. Yet each time, you either repute each post we make or say something like, "I'm not sure if if I'll want to do that."

Sep 17 2011, 12:11 am TiKels Post #80

Audio engineering is not what I'm looking for. It's just not. It's telling a architect that he should work in a cement factory, because cement can be used to build things.

I want my theory and I want my playing, not balancing EQs ;P

That's easy for you to say. I don't want to be hungry, but I don't think I will be. I want to know, in part, if my college plan looks sound. Lol sound, haha.
