Military purposes? Random much?

None.

Well every large project needs to have some military purpose... otherwise what's the point?

None.

In his defense, this whole topic was fairly random.

I reckon it'd be extremely odd.

I mean, rope physics in 0-gravity would be really interesting to watch, but ropes in 2 gravities...

Wouldn't it burn up in the atmosphere though? Or is that just fast-moving objects? And how would a rope endure freezing cold..

Err.. I think this is assuming the rope is made out of fibers of the hardest substance known to man.

Y'know... I don't think that there would be that much 'freezing cold'... Earth's atmosphere only gets 'cold' up to a certain point, where the protection from the sun's radiation starts to dissapear. And since there is nothing to take away thermal energy from objects in space (apart from radiation, which won't take away that much) the rope would get really hot.

Hmm, all this has probably been mentioned already >.<

I have a quick question...

Why are all the scientific topics on here totally ridiculous?

I mean, half of these discussions not even useful, because you have to remove several laws of physics for them to even work, just stuff like "what if you removed the laws of gravity and the speed of light and launched a bologna sandwich at an infinite amout of bacon?"

That being said, this would've made an interesting five minute conversation. I have a feeling a giant space rope would just pull itself free and become a huge killing machine that would rip through cities on Earth's surface.

Err.. your new avatar is scary. I liked the yam better.

On a slightly off-topic note, being lightweight is not a requirement, it's a bonus. If you attach the rope using a screw that goes to the center of the moon, no matter what substance it is, it won't do much (or.. will it alter the moon's orbit?). I mean, gold fits just about everything else there. Gold fibers.
