Units:
-Catina -Cargo Ship -Mercenary Gunship
-Power? -Raider -Starbase

Attacks:
-Grenades -Plasma Drip

Other:
-Wireframes -Blizzard

BW Maps(Staredit automatically deletes doodads from older versions):
-(2)Showdown -(4)Forsaken Valley -(4)Sanctuary
-(6)Close Encounters -(6)Winter Conquest -(8)Frozen Sea

SC Maps(unable to be opened via Staredit):
-96x96_ash4 -96x96_space4 -96x96_wasteland4
-128x128_ash4 -128x128_space4 -128x128_wasteland4

Portrait:
-Mengsk(Front view) -Neutral Advisor
-Neutral Biker -Terran Bomber(Valkarie)

Note: I may have missed some but I'll be hunting for more and these are all genuine files!
Update: I went through the brood war beta .mpq file and found out that every single unit, building, and powerup had way more animations than today's version. I acquired the starcraft beta .mpq file some time ago and can't seem to find it. Also, you'll be surprised at the list of names that Blizzard used for these units, an example is that the Bunker was originally called a Pillbox.
Update 2: Ok so I forgot the Repair Bay and I'm working on getting that grp file and I just noticed that for some odd reason, I can't open any sc1 beta maps even though they are in a .scm file type.
Update 3: Ok it seems that Scmdraft 2 won't open the maps but Staredit just came up with a strange error message I never saw before. "This scenario was created with an obsolete version of the Starcraft Campaign Editor. Scenario Version: Brood War internal (map version 75) This scenario will be updated to a current version when you save."
Update 4: BTW, the beta for sc1 was expected to last 2 - 4 weeks long, pretty short
Update 5: My bad, Broodwar beta was expected to last 2 - 4 weeks long, but Starcraft beta was expected to last 1 - 3 weeks. I also found some portraits and sound files that may be interesting
Update 6: In the Starcraft beta mpq, theres a few unknowns so hopefully the repair bay will be in one of those

eternal lurker

I think you're missing the Repair Bay:

Excellent find, still. How on earth did you get your hands on a beta MPQ?

mmm the repair bay, it seems that brood war beta doesn't contain extra unused units from starcraft beta.

So it was true that they shrunk the Merc Gunship's model in whatever 3D program they were using and gave it to the Valkyrie. :)

If possible, could you please see whether there are unused portraits/sound files in beta MPQs as well?

None.

I don't believe Blizzard used a 3D program because sc is in an isometric point of view instead of 3d like sc2. I could tell you that if you look real closely in today's mpq file, there is an unused portrait. I don't believe any sound files would be different unless it's from an earlier beta and graphics are the same as well. However, there may be unused portraits for the heroes of the unused units and with that will be sound so I'll look out for that.

EDIT: Repair Bay is NOT in either Starcraft or Brood War beta so the Repair Bay must be in an earlier beta or alpha version of starcraft.
EDIT 2: Actually nvm, there's a chance that the Repair Bay is one of the unknowns

This has nothing to do with a company using a 3D program or not. Blizzard definitely used a 3D program.

Sc is entirely 2d. Almost all graphics were rendered from a 3d app, most likely 3ds max. Most sprite-based games use 3d applications to make their sprites.

Many of the effects for d2 and possibly sc1 were created in a third party program... I forget what it was called but I have it lying around somewhere.

Show them your butt, and when you do, slap it so it creates a sound akin to a chorus of screaming spider monkeys flogging a chime with cacti. Only then can you find your destiny at the tip of the shaft.

Actually, what kind of proof is there that Blizzard used a 3d program?

Almost all sprite-based games after about 1995 or 1996 will be using 3d models, which they then render into sprites. This is especially true for any game that has multiple views of the same unit from different angles. To do this with a model, you simply create it, animate it, and then take 'photos' of it from each angle. Otherwise, you have to manually draw all the different angles by hand, and it's quite likely they'd end up looking wonky.

Also: see Starcraft or Diablo 1/2 manuals where it has the close up view of the units/monsters. They are clearly 3D models.

Paying attention to the way lighting is handled on the units alone should be evidence enough that it was pre-rendered. That kind of detailing in manual spriting is extremely difficult to do, much less in a timely manner, for hundreds of frames a unit.

Yet with 3ds max I can go from a Lineage 2 or WoW model to a sprite with all animations in about 10 minutes.

For starcraft you have a few more considerations but most are handled before render time, anything else is generally scripted in something like PSP.
