Because any wiki should have one! :awesome:

http://www.staredit.net/starcraft2/Starter_Guide

It isn't finished at all and still requires a lot of work. I'm counting on everyone's help.
Do you think the current organization is great? The goal is mainly to provide -links- to other pages.

Is this supposed to replace the GalaxyEdit page as our basic tutorial? I quite like how the Galaxy Edit page is set up.

Nope. GalaxyEdit page is there to explain the very very very basic tools anyone wanting to mess with the editor has to know.
The Starter Guide's function is to provide the most relevant links of the wiki to the eye of a beginner... That is, explanation of the different modules/windows/etc. and complete examples of concrete applications/systems.

EDIT:
This wiki requires more informations on the section "Most used actions":

Btw, I think "Starter Guide" is a bad name for this wiki.
Would "Beginners' Guide" be better?

Throw out ideas!

Everyone thinks "Starter Guide" is 100% proper? :/
And is everyone fine with the fact that I link to outer resources such as SC2Mapster? I find it relevant... but we never know. :/

OVERWATCH STATUS GO

As long as we don't have articles that are only links to SC2M, I'm fine with linking to them as a resource since they are a great resource.

I thought about renaming it to "General Mapping Reference Guide" since, in some unknown future, it -will- contain advanced stuff as well (the current layout already implies this).
Any objections?

Starter Guide's a lot more snappy, keep it as it is.

But the Starter Guide is vowed to become something much bigger than a guide only reserved to new map-makers... the name has to change, imo.
As it is right now, its organization makes the "Starter Guide" much more appealing than the "Complete list", and yet it contains about 65% of the information the "Complete list". An advanced map-maker would probably be glad to fall on this organized wiki more than on the "Complete list". :S

How about we have a page called 'The Basics', with the subtitle 'Getting started with the Galaxy Editor'. And then we have an "Advanced" page, subtitled: "Learning theory and advanced editing". Then we separate them according?

We should make the current 'Starter Guide' page 'The Basics'. But, I think it could be beneficial (in this unforseen future) if we had a 'home-page', which tells people about SEN - very basic, couple sentences - and about the Wiki project. This 'home-page' then asks if you are a 'complete beginner' or an 'advanced map/mod maker' and will link you to the Basics and Advanced pages respectively. We can also link Basics to Advanced and vice versa with a little sentence like "Couldn't find what you were looking for? Try the 'basics/advanced' guide instead".

Just my suggestion.

:payne:

Should the Starter Guide look more like a "Guide" that would lead people to read articles one-per-one in a certain order, explaining why it is relevant and such... ?

Something like this: http://us.battle.net/sc2/en/forum/topic/1127157343#4

:O

I think leading people by example is the best way to teach people.

It'd be way better to actually show a person how to do something practical, like for instance creating a unit
Giving a unit an ability copied from another
changing the ability/unit stats and etc.

rather than having them go thru the whole slew of things, giving them an objective would make it much more straightforward.

Interesting way of seeing it. I think I see the potential it'd have if we actually had a concrete example to start working on.
I believe Cardinal's idea of making a wiki for every aspect of his RPG would be perfect to achieve this goal, am I right? :O

Those would be tutorials, but the starter guide is more of a cheat sheet.

Not necessarily tutorials :D

What we could do is take a random example map..
The most common would be like a normal arena map of some sort (something concrete that has been done before, like Swarmed Heroes)
and then just go through how some of the heroes are done... going from most easy to most difficult. and taking baby steps.
