Below is a direct quote from a post I just made at MaxForums.

Quote from name:maxforums
As the title suggests, I'm wanting to know of universities or colleges which do graphics design and/or 3D Design. Particularly good (respected?) universities with good (well-known?) reputations for the level of teaching and facilities offered. This might seem like a bizarre concept, but for example, Aberdeen is renowned for it's high level of teaching and research in Law, History of Art, Geology, Business and to a certain degree, Medicine. While it [Aberdeen University] does offer a wide variety of courses across multiple disciplines, the main focus of the university in terms of budgeting and staffing lies primarily within the subjects listed above.

As some of you know, I am currently in my 3rd year at Aberdeen. My BSc in Geography turned out to be a rash decision and while I have loved my time in university, the reality has dawned that I am firstly, not ready to do a dissertation in the next 18 months, and secondly, my interest in the field of geography has diminished to such a degree that I have no enthusiasm for classes, assignments or future career prospects.

I am going to defer my time in University; as in, drop out, but continue at a later date. It is something I have thought long and hard about. I have had a preliminary discussion with my advisor and he suggests that if I were to go down this road, I should finish the current semester (January Exams) and then when I return to university, instead of going straight into a dissertation I'd have a whole semester to get back into the academia and prepare for the dissertation. It was an option which I wasn't expecting and has thrown me off a little. Ultimately, it makes sense.

My advisor was in a hurry because he had a meeting, so I didn't speak to him about the viability of changing my degree entirely. Anyway, I've been waffling so I'll cut to the chase:

1. What universities and/or colleges offer 'good' courses in 3D design software?
2. Do any of you know what the possibility is of changing a degree entirely? (I will find out on Monday, so not really an important question.
3. Finally, what are your thoughts on my plan of action... wise? unwise? stupid? recommended? etc...

I appreciate that SEN is mostly US, but the same questions generally apply. Primarily the 3rd one.

I sort of want to say it's a SORT OF bad idea but only because of the field you are switching to. It seems Art related jobs are the most fulfilling yet hard to work for field. Is just seems really sketchy. Like trying to start a band and getting famous. I also wanted to get into Digital media and Design but it seems so sketchy. I've told that I'm better off learning the art on my own as a side hobby and when I'm at decent skill level I should join or start projects and keep leap frogging into bigger projects. I've been told that degrees are cool stuff but experience also weighs a lot more in most Art fields.

Sorry if that didn't make 100% sense. I'm a little hungover but you get the idea. I'm sure Cecil will come in here and make a post saying that what you are doing is great and to go ahead with it.

ONE LAST THING THAT I've been told. MOST college students change their major ALL the time. It's normal. So I've been told :3

Edit: Don't forget that you need to know how to draw at an adequate level to get into the 3D field. I've been told.

This is very true. I was a theater major before I switched to business, my twin sister was music before she switched to child development or something, my older sister was history before she changed to public speaking...you see the trend.

I also started at a private school, dropped it, got a degree from a CC, and am now almost done with a bachelors' degree from a third college. My twin is on her third college and my older sister also changed once.

Changing degrees/schools/career paths is completely normal. If you want to go into graphic design nobody is stopping you.

One of my friends got his degree in computer graphics design at Pratt in NY last may. The thing is he still struggles to find a job. Right now he has an internship which is completely unrelated to his degree but even to this day I think he is still searching for a job in computer graphic design. And he's not the only one I know who has such troubles.

But still, IMO graphics design over geography any day. What on earth can you do with a geography degree?

Don't quote me on this but I'm pretty sure it's like that for almost any art related job. I think your slightly dependent on your social skills, you gotta know people. You bes' be sure you LOVE this.

Maybe you should look at a marketing degree and a gfx minor so that you know best practices and proper copy techniques. ;)

This. I can't say that an art degree is good for financial security, but it's no worse than geography so by all means switch to what you like.

Getting anywhere in anything is usually more about who you know than what you know.
