Dota 2 has been announced for next year.

Here's the article as it is on gameinformer.
Collapsable Box

Looks promising. And the artwork on their website looks freakin amazing. They also seem to be trying to fix the entire community in this game, with the coaching, the community integration, etc.

Even though I love HoN, I'm thinking this just may kill it and possibly LoL as well, unless the free to play people are still enough to keep that alive.

Looks like I won't be buying HoN anytime soon. :awesome:

So, what I skimmed is... it's going to be the exact same thing, but prettier? Hopes = dashed.

I am perfectly happy with playing LoL anyway, so I'm not switching to one that costs money :S
(Comp prolly can't run it anyway...)

HoN drove me away, and DotA 2 is keeping me away, for this reason.

What if DotA 2 employs the same system as LoL, or better yet, no micro-transactions at all. Either that or it's going to be included in the Orange Box 2. :awesome:

I wish they would make a DotA except it was more third person than top down and was more Samurai warriors/Dynasty warriors (Thats the name of the game right?). Yea they should mix God Of War with DotA. Yep.

This sounds strangely awesome... They should make it somewhat more like the way the average fantasy-MMO works with movements and spellcasting. Could be very interesting indeed.

Makes me want it more. =o

I'm really excited for this, it will absolutely demolish HoN if it can draw the DotA community en masse like HoN tried to. I'm going to guess that it will and if so I'd be happy to move over. More and more I've lost faith in HoN's ability to develop a high quality game with such a small staff. LoL is intended for a more casual audience and those players can stay there, they'll just feed anyway. =p I have hope that DotA 2 can pull people from various competitive genres and make them excited for the game and interested in the competitive scene. S2 has failed miserably in that thus far.

Pfft, Valve? Get ready for Siege of the Casual Kingdom.

I'm curious to see if Valve will make it free to play. If they made it cost money, they would probably lose over half of DotA's player base. I would still buy it if it cost money, unless it costs as much as SC2.

From what I can tell it's going to be like HoN in that its essentially just a DotA clone with all the same mechanics and items/heroes. If this is the case it won't kill LoL, but it will probably kill HoN (LoL's already doing that anyway).

I'd rather they take Riot's approach and make a fresh MOBA with original content, heroes and mechanics.

I kind of like it as a more identical clone. It is much easier to pick it up since the hero models are more recognizeable as well as the spells.

I'd also like it better as a DotA clone, assuming they actually port over a significant amount of the items and heroes. I loved HoN, but I hated how they never ported over Tinker or Nerubian Asssassin, my two favourite heroes. :(

Free but you'd have to pay extra for hats and personal hero appearance customization. huehue.

Let me show you how to hump without making love.

IceFrog's real name is Abdul Ismail and he worked for S2 during the development of HoN for those of you who are behind on your information. He was released due to the fact S2 was getting tired of his attempts to take control and basically left/quit.

The game by valve is called DOTA, not DotA or Defense of the Ancients, Blizzard and Guinsoo made sure that this happened. Blame them.

Also, apparently, IceFrog has 100% control over DOTA, to the point of several whistle-blowers at Valve calling him a dick, asshole and extemely hard to work with for the reason we all love IceFrog: Everything is his call, nobody else's and he will have it no other way. If he sees something is needed, he will act on it.

My standpoint on it has been copied and pasted several times:

Quote
Eul, who did actually make a FT version, but it was very incomplete. Guinsoo then made the All-Stars version, one of many different versions that were made after this. All-Stars ended up being the most successful, with the newly added recipes and if I remember correctly, introduced runes. However while Guinsoo was in charge of the project, it was extremely imbalanced and had a lot of bugs. Stepping down and handing the torch to IceFrog, who then made the map 'balanced' and competitive. That may sound small, but balance is a hell of a lot more work than anything. If it wasn't for IceFrog, DotA wouldn't have been anywhere near as popular as it is today.

In all honesty, Guinsoo needs to stop being such a prick about DotA 2, it cannot just remain so... 'Unfinished.' This is the obvious next step and when it launches, here is my predictions as a person who has followed DotA since RoC:

The HoN community is about 90% DotA die-hards. I suspect that the entire percentage will at least buy DotA 2. LoL on the other hand, a large majority of their player-base have never even played DotA, but I suspect that half of the players will at least try DotA 2, maybe not buy it, but definitely give it an interested pair of eyes and ears.

I stand behind IceFrog as he was given the rights to DotA-Allstars, he has full rights over it in that respect. Guinsoo left it behind if anything, he can suck the failure that he ended up having Riot versus Valve.

Also, forgot to mention: IceFrog has always been 100% about giving credit where it is due, but is a "no-bullshit" type of guy. If he doesn't see a reason for it, he won't do it: Like the forums that Pendragon maintained. IceFrog will almost, most definitely, still give credit and thanks to Eul, Guinsoo, Pendragon and I can bet your bottom dollar, Kunkka.

Here is the most infamous leak on IceFrog concerning his Valve employment: http://icefrogtruth.blogspot.com/

Meh. IceFrog is trying to make money from a hobby he's put thousands of hours into? What an asshole!

He left S2 because they were dicks about creative control, which I can completely understand. IceFrog knows what he's doing, anyone who says otherwise is braindead. Anyone who doesn't give him near-free reign is equally stupid. He took a pretty cool concept of a game and made it the most competitive game in the world, with 10 million players. Valve is pissed off because they can't do what S2's doing and ruin a great concept by adding their own "flair" to it.

And evidently IceFrog graduated like 2 miles from where I am right now?

He sounds like the kind of guy I want in my company to make sure my games are perfect.
Starting an "I LOVE IceFrog" thread in 3, 2, 1...
