Quote from fat_flying_pigs
Great... So everything works, but now I can't uninstall this one program: wd smartware. All the files and regestry files are gone, but it's still on my program list.
When I try to uninstall it, it give me: "There is a problem with this windows installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor."
When I try installing, it gives me: "The application has encountered an unexpected error and is now exiting."

Edit: I was transferring some files from my old account to my new, and the new one froze also. I tried the original one, thinking maybe I moved the problem to the new account, but it was on both accounts... I deleted both of them (all all my game save data D: ) and made a third account. Hasn't froze yet.. hopefully it won't again.
Still have the problem above.
wd smartware is bundled with your hard drive. It is impossible to uninstall because it is built into the firmware.

Have you installed any drivers or anything lately? Installed any new hardware? Programs? Anything like that?

None.

I recommend System Restore in Win7 as a first port of call for "suddenly things don't work properly" and you don't think it's a virus.

I think I turned system restore off on my computer also, but when you do a windows update it seems to make an automatic restore point anyway. I screwed around with my Users folder (trying to move it to another drive) and got it stuck in a retarded state that I couldn't find a way out of. Luckily I had a windows restore point made automatically that morning - loaded it back up and everything was fine.

Turn of the system restore on your pc be right clicking on my computer and entering the properties (after malware is removed). Then, turn it back on. This will renew your restore points, thus eliminating any possible infection in your restore points.

You need to run more than just an anti-virus, I suggest running through this: Malware Removal

If you don't have enough time to do this before the computer crashes you'll have to restore from an earlier point, or reinstall the OS system. You could also boot into something like Linux to backup all your files you want, then reinstall the OS.

This more than likely isn't virus related at all. If I had to guess I would have to say some system files were corrupted. You may have to try to do a system recovery from the installation disc if you have one. Otherwise, you will have to reinstall... which you would also need the disc for. So, hopefully you have your install disc. :)

Ok, results:
IT WAS NOT A VIRUS. Although I did have a few and some malware, it was not the problem. The problem was some corrupted file under C:/User/Name/ directory.
I didn't bother looking for it; I just made a new account, and deleted the old one. Luckily, I didn't delete my SW map.
Now I have better anti virus, and a screwed up firmware... but my lappy works. Just have to spend some time restoring all my preferences...

And since this happened when I installed aol (whether it was the cause or not): FUCK AOL.

(mods, feel free to lock this)

We can't explain the universe, just describe it; and we don't know whether our theories are true, we just know they're not wrong. >Harald Lesch

Trillian is an excellent choice, though I wouldn't recommend the basic variant. It misses vital features I would miss a lot hadn't I "made" it pro.

Eh, I wouldn't really call them vital, just nice to have :)

But yes, next to Pidgin, Trillian is by far my favorite.

I deem history vital, for example. Maybe being a power user my expectations are too high though...

Meh, the history feature in Pidgin is free :)
