Ah right, the Pencil belongs to [input generic name for pencil manufacturer] the paper belongs to [input generic name for paper manufacturer] so these companies own the graphite on the paper and thus own the picture I've drawn, I see...

There's a huge difference between drawing a picture and making a map using preset... well, everything, really.

The pencil was made with creating completely new things in mind, once you've used up a pencil, it's not a pencil any more. Whereas if you use the Marine model in the editor, it's still a Marine.

Arguing doesn't even matter. They do own it and a few kids on a mildly unpopular starcraft forum aren't about to change that or cause any rage against it. Look at the failure of the L4D2 boycott, and that was thousands. Anyways, it's not a pencil. It's much more complex.

This. That pencil would actually be one of those pens that read what you write out loud. Also the paper is actually some sort of tablet that's hooked up to the world (Internet). The amount they give you really count and saying they gave you a pencil and paper is like saying they gave you a keyboard and notepad.

Now then. If you guys were to just blindly eat any shit blizzard gave us and payed for every rehash and DLC we wouldn't have this problem.

I've heard we can't play/test maps locally. Each map has to be uploaded to bnet. Is that true?
Also the limit of 5 maps. THIS is a real problem. Not some legal bullshit that has no real effect on you.
Also the limit of being locked to a region. Got a friend in Europe/Asia you wanna play with? Just change the gate since your ping is good enough to handle overseas connections. Oh wait...
Besides bnet 2.0 in its current form sucks. I want bnet 1.0 back. With all the problems it had it was still better because it was usable.
Sorry Blizzard, but I'm not paying for being placed under disability. I play the campaign which is pretty awesome then go back to SC1 until Blizzard comes to senses.

No, you could even test locally while the Beta was down.

The limit is 5 as of now. Blizzard has stated if you make popular maps you can get it raised. Also, you can remove maps you've published if you want to publish more.

Wow, that was an arbitrary example for a tool. Take a programming if you wish.
I could buy Borland C++ and make a program out of it. I'm sure they have predefined code for buttons and stuff too. But still it's my own program because there's no EULA.

The thing is, yes I take the marine to shoot stuff with it. And the marine graphics are property of Blizzard. Nobody will deny that. HOWEVER the Marine is actually just a template for a fighting character. I could as well take a HALO warrior or create a model of a S.W.A.T. member. But why should everything else still belong to Blizzard? I made the triggers. I thought of the concept of the map. In case of RPGs I made up dialogs and story. How is that just using a preset?
The only thing I could respect is if they said I'm not allowed to make money of it because of their online map store / premium maps.

I suspect that clause is just so they can hire people off the street
That, by the way, is how Tim Willits, lead designer at Id Software, got hired.

The Pencil and Paper analogy doesn't really work in the case of GE. The usual game that the software industry plays is "Software is licensed, not sold."

When you buy Pencils or Paper, you own the product completely. When you bought Starcraft II, Windows, OS X, or pretty much any other non-FLOSS (free/libre/open source software), you purchased a license to use it, rather than the ownership of the actual software itself. If we had software ownership, piracy wouldn't be a big issue, since we'd be free to distribute, modify, hack, or do whatever we wanted with the software, as is the case with Linux and most free open source software.

Does Blizzard have free reign to do what they want with this EULA, including taking ownership of content? I don't know, but I'll add in the fact that you're making content using assets and TOOLS that you -don't- own.

Also, the person who created DotA rejected Blizzard's offer and went to work for Valve, so I doubt they want that happening again.

I bet they did this because of DotA, that map is almost more popular than Warcraft III itself. So if you make a map they like you will become an obligate employee of Blizzard Entertainment. Nice...

It's more like someone built a house and you came in and arranged the furniture inside the house. The people who built the house still own it. Who cares anyway, if your seriously looking to make a living on SC map making by selling your maps then I feel sorry for you.

I feel sorry for people who still cares after reading this
