If a job can be purchased at a video game store for $10 and requires no actual work output from the individual in question, then yes, StarCraft is most definitely a job.
I made money for my maps. I dunno about y'all, but now me rich.
I actually treated maps as important, as I plan to get into a game dev career. SC maps are just small games, and allow you to focus on design more than production. I don't plan to enter into specifically design, but it sure doesn't hurt.
And, Lol @ tux's post that was deleted.

If you take a game seriously like you take your job, you need a life.
I scollred down this topic and read the replies and this is the first one which reflects my opinion

-1 Scrollred? I disagree. If you don't focus on a hobby with detailed precision then you are missing a big part of hobbying (verb?).

+1. It's time for an intervention. But no, I agree completely, just look at dem0ns1ayer. He plays sc-lobby all day when he isn't playing tennis.
If I can't actually use karma, I'll use meta-karma by expressing my opinions and putting crossed out +1/-1

I make/made maps just for fun. Which is why I believe I only finished one map and had like 10 unfinished maps back when I played. I either just wanted to keep adding things to the map and make them perfectly balanced or I moved on to another map.
Would I treat it as a job? Hell no, it'd take too much time for the type of person that I'm at. I can't Imagine going 16 hours non-stop except for food and bathroom making a map.
I am an insanely hard working person when I've got something in for it. Last fall semester on the Microprocessors class we had a massive project to do. We started that specific day at about 6PM and left the laboratory at 7AM. I was surprised there was daylight and that I didn't notice. I just went to the cafeteria, had some breakfast and went to my 7:30AM class. At least I bathed before going to the lab, wouldn't have been a pretty sight going a whole day without bathing since 6AM the day before and still wearing the same clothes.

how could you possibly ask a question like this... its a GAME.

I just got active all of a sudden. Maybe I'm more motivated by the fact that I want to make my mark before sc2 comes out. As for the job thing, I agree with demonslayer.
P.S. Kame, do you even make maps? Or do anything other than post in the "Other" forums?
None.
Some parts of mapmaking can be a chore. Once the creative process is over, the rest is pretty menial; past that point, I'll be driven solely by the desire to finish a good map and reap the profits that come thereafter.
I don't see why any mapmaker would consider the
whole process as a chore though; the question seems irrelevant as samsizzle mentioned it. If you're making maps in the first place it's because you enjoy it. Otherwise, there's something wrong.
Were you asking because you consider it as a chore yet feel queasy about not making anything in a community where everyone else does(or should)?

Making maps was like building a chair for myself. I didn't do it for anyone else, but at times it wasn't enjoyable. The end product, was like relaxing in my own glory, my chair, complete.
I would not consider it a job, but I've never gotten into the furniture business.

Reading between the lines, that looks like a very low-paid, entry-level position - don't even need any kind of programming experience for making development tools, for example.
Of course, if you don't have a job, or want to get your foot in the door, it's probably a good one to apply for. But then again many others will also be applying for this job, so you'd be up against quite a lot of stiff competition. Also, unless you're completely awesome at SC1 maps, I think you'd need War3 editor experience if you wanted to get into the final rounds of interviews, let alone seal the deal.

I can guarantee you that position pays considerably well, especially since it's a Blizzard position. Also, the competition for that position is going to be very, very tough.

Very well said. Poetic, even. I applaud your mastery of the engrish language.

Gotta agree with you here. I literally had about 20 unfinished maps that I never published. Yet I still enjoyed every moment I made them.

Lol.. This is like asking whether or not you can make getting laid a job, there is no monetary gain but the result is still satisfying.. Games are just another form of lifestyle.

Once I tried to put as much effort as I would if mapping was my job, but, you know, I realized that SC's sandbox
sucks is horrible eww is pretty bad compared to what we have available today.
If your question was about "gamemaking" instead of "SC", my answer would be yes.
None.

For srs? I've never mapped. I only played starcraft for like twenty minutes...
