Eh, I honestly never thought SEN had the memberbase to actually make use of karma. If there were enough active members visiting SEN, then the few who screw around would be negligible.

Except that in the example I had, the serious discussion topic, posts would be hidden simply because they go against popular belief.
True. Since I believe everyone should have voice in SD, having karma disabled for posts from this section would be best then.
As for other sections, hiding dumb responses (e.g. posts telling someone asking for help to simply scrap his/her idea) could be useful.

If a post is bad enough to warrant hiding it, then you might as well just report the post and let a mod delete it. I really don't see the point of karma. It's just another way for people to obsess about their e-peen and it's not even helpful.

The only way I see it working is if it was something like youtube, where there's a section at the top where the highest rated comments are shown. But the comments in youtube videos don't really compare to forum psots as there isn't really a topic and there could be a ton of comments on one video about completely random stuff.

Beer's system worked.

On a side note, all of these approaches -- karma, activity, etc. -- have the flaw that they show a user's cumulative history. They don't show a user's current habits. If I act awesome for a year and then act like a major douche for a month, my total karma would either be positive or near zero (depending on my doucheality), but it probably wouldn't be negative.

We need current stats in addition to "lifelong" ones. If karma were brought back, it could simply be the amount of karma gained in the last month or so. Activity could likewise use a "now" measure; perhaps splitting it into "All Activity" and "Recent Activity" (with the latter having a decay rate) could worl.

I believe that warranting enough negative karma to delete or hide a post is something we should walk away from. It gives slight moderator powers to the users, and this is something we really do not want to do. For example, let's say that Moose released a new version of Temple Siege and I don't like it. I make a big post saying it's a bad quality mad (I've never played Temple Siege, just an example) and a lot of people don't like my post so they put negative karma on it and "delete" it. It was a quality post that just had an opinion and it didn't break any rule. If a post needs to be removed, just report it and a moderator will deal with it.

The idea of having a total karma and last month's karma isn't bad at all, I see no additional disadvantages in doing this if karma were to be used.

As I said before, the idea of negative karma restricting what a member can do is that you indirectly give the members moderator abilities, something which we can never do.

I guess that pretty much proves his point.
