OVERWATCH STATUS GO

The current version of SC2 is far from balanced, but they're getting there.

This topic has been discussed before. I think IP made a thread over a year ago about how to handle the future of SEN with the release of SC2. There were some good organizational suggestions in there.
Mind finding back this topic?
http://www.staredit.net/topic/6187/

My suggestion was breaking the forum down into the following:

Melee map makers can include their maps in the Map Production, etc. Modding should just get it's own section apart from the SC1/2 sections, I think.

Just a thought. And as it stands now, I think we have 19 non-clan forums. This list has 20, so it wont be a huge change number-wise.
And obviously Modding will be a big part of SC2 map making, but perhaps keeping it as a separate forum would be better.

SCI modding and SCII modding should be separate, because they're vastly different. SCII modding should be considered a subcategory of SCII mapping. SCI mapping and modding should be completely hideable (without the annoying maximization bar). There should be an entire forum group dedicated to different artistic aspects of SCII - terraining, modelling, skinning, audio-making. So no terraining in the SCII forum. Instead, however, we might also want to expand the forums we have to deal with creation of spells and complex systems (coding, in other words), because those won't really fit in Map Making Assistance. The forum will be overburdened anyway.

OVERWATCH STATUS GO

I think my original reason for separating them was so that the Modding forum would only deal with SC1, since SC2's editor is a built-in mod tool. Or something.

Maybe something like this instead, Cent?

You're missing Melee.

Also, do we really need seven whole forums dedicated to Starcraft once the new game comes out?

None.

OVERWATCH STATUS GO

I don't think we need any, other than Mod Showcase and Map Showcase, but I figured someone would try to argue that we did.

That's my version. It's not as compact as CAFG's is, but I think that that's not necessarily a bad thing.

What would be the difference between General Discussion and General Assistance under SC2?

And I agree on the SC1 list. Like I said, we only need Map Production and Mod Production anyway. :D

Again, I reiterate my point: where would the "Terrain" section belong?

General Discussion, I suppose. Once SC2 is released, I imagine people will stop posting as much about irrelevant SC1 terrain, unfortunately.

I think ultimately, SC1's forums will only be here as historical reference anyway. I highly doubt we'll be getting an influx of new maps and terrain months after people have assimilated to SC2.

SCII general discussion would be things like discussing patches, expansions (like the SCII forum we have now), new editors (and other MAJOR contributions like that), etc. Assistance would be like what UMS assistance is now.

I'd also like to change the DLDB and wiki a bit, but I have fewer solid ideas about that, so... yeah.

Mar 24 2010, 8:39 pm Doodle77 Post #34

@Centreri's plan

I don't think Audio needs a forum. Sound production is not game-specific.
Skinning is really a part of modeling.
I think the Tools forum should stick around for SC1.

Have a "Starcraft" and "starcraft 2" button that when click simply switches the mapping/game related forums with the proper game. Leaving Null and such always "on top"

It's simple and easy.

I would just get rid of Trigger Assistance, then. I don't think we'd need multiple Assistance forums for non-art-related map making.

Devlin, I simply believe that SCII map making will be too complex to keep all of that in one forum. If we have one forum specifically for triggering assistance and one for unit settings, upgrades, etc questions, it'll be more managable. They do overlap, a bit, but I don't think one forum is enough.

Doodle, Audio production may not be SCII-specific, but it's very relevant. The one argument against it is that it'll probably be rare; however, unless we make an 'everything else artistic' forum, it'd still fit nicely. Skinning isn't necessarily a part of modelling. In WCIII, at least, its possible to simply export the skin file, edit it, and apply it in-game without touching the model. It looks new and is easier to do. While modelling would include aspects of skinning, the opposite wouldn't be true.

I have a feeling a lot of topic-moving will take place due to confusion. :P

I agree that it will be a lot to handle in that one forum. Perhaps changing the section "Starcraft II Art" to "Starcraft II Assistance" would be better, and include "Triggers" and "General Assistance" under that?

Just put it in showcase maybe, or have a SC2 Art section?
