Bluescreen

So today while browsing the internet kaspersky says: "Trojan contained" or something and then a second later a windows note saying "kaspersky definitions are out of date." When I open kasp it says that to fully remove a virus threat, I have to reboot. I run an update for kasp and then reboot.

When I reboot, it now bluescreens. I get the blackscreen first (option for safe mode / go to previous version). Everything leads to blue screen.

So... what now?

That workaround disables the affected component, so it would probably also stop the BSoD's on an infected system, if you could get the workaround put in place. There are ways to open the registry files for a Windows installation that is not running, so you can modify settings.

ᴄʜᴇᴇsᴇ ɪᴛ!

Go download linux, ubuntu will work.

Burn it to a CD and boot using linux.

Attach an extra hard drive, or at least something that isn't c:. Copy all important files over to this new drive.

If you have a prebuilt, obtain a copy of your operating system by any means necessary (try not to get a botnet version) and look on the case for the sticker which has the serial on it.

Put the OS cd in, and boot with it into windows setup. Reformat the hard drive (quick will work, but the longer one is better) and install the operating system on that partition. If you have multiple partitions you can delete them if you want, or make some new ones. It's your choice.

Let windows setup guide you through installation and put the serial in when asked.

Copy the files you backed up over to the fresh installation.

Congratulations! You now have a virus free and working computer.

It sounds like you have a rootkit virus which messes with kaspersky. Your computer should be considered compromised until you reinstall windows. That's just the way it is. If you're sure it's a bug, and not a virus, then by all means follow the links above. However, my solution would work on either.

Quick is better, the long format is a waste of time.

when your time is worthless, does it matter? Run the long one and eat lunch.

The long format checks the disk for bad sectors and marks them as such, while the quick format simply runs through the entire disk, I'd go with the long format on my own system, rather than end up with another BSoD when I discover there actually was a bad sector on the HDD and my OS just got written to it.
