Two players only. It was going to be a full RPG with weapons, spells, bosses and all that, but there's just no way I'm going to be able to complete that. The last edit was a while ago, I just thought I'd share it. Zennou was going to be the potential RPG's name, but as for now it's just a concept.

Two things required: Windows and a numpad, as it uses hotkeyed selection detection on the numpad. When it starts, on the numpad 8 is up, 4 is left, 5 is down, 6 is right. Touch a side to teleport to a different section of the map. It also uses Unit Coordinates/Location Grids.

Just a selection detection on a spider mine hotkeyed at the beginning of the game, let's say 4, which is left. Minus 14 X coordinates from the unit's coordinates and order it there. That's the gist of it anyway.

Does the player have to manually hotkey it when the game starts?

Hotkeys can't be set through the map itself, so yeah.

1. This isn't WASD movement.
2. It won't work with people that don't have numpads.
3. Using numpad right/left/up/down moves the screen.

1. It's pretty similar, the setup of 4,5,6,8 is almost exactly the same as WASD. Notice the quotes
2. Obviously
3. If you played it, then you'd recognize it has special dimensions to prevent that.

It shouldn't if numlock is on right?

Or maybe it does, that would suck.

Screen scrolls regardless, but hotkeyed units aren't selected with it off

Hold on a second. I thought actions based on EUD conditions desynced players.

PyMS and ProTRG developer

Actions executed by EUD's that are comparing non-shared memory will desync. Player selections are shared.

That's pretty cool.

Majority of people have Windows, and I think a lot of laptops now have a numpad included too. It'd be something different definitely, with a shitload of limits, but with a lot of potential. With map scrolling there's no limit to map size, players can conveniently press 0 for attack/spells, 1-3 in the regular number row for weapon switching, and bosses can have neat slope inter/extrapolating spells. A short, enjoyable RPG could be done with this.

I agree. Especially if you accidentally double click the hotkey to move your screen to the mine. Also, no map will be easily made on a 20x12 surface if there is no way to change terrain...

Why would anyone double click a hotkey when you only need to press it once? Buildings, lifted and not, can act as walls/things to differentiate different parts of the map. Sure it's not easy, no part of the map is easy. I don't think Elementa was easy either. It's the most glaring drawback, but the spells would make up for it.

Someone can accidentally double click a hotkey. Buildings don't really replace the feeling of real terrain. Also, no person wants their game to be harder to make than it needs to be. There's also a chance that your hotkey can get lost somehow. Also... how do you stop moving?

This is the coolest thing you can do with selection detection. I have no idea why everyone is hating on it (haven't seen one good reason yet). My guess is they're jealous they didn't think of it first, or they did, never did it and are now mad you beat them to it.

Dec 6 2009, 7:15 pm xYoshix Post #20

It seems really impractical :S
